Roll Call ...All Maineiacs please report In..Part III
Comments (51)Hi-- I'm not into gardening, but I AM from Maine, and came across this thread while doing a search on another topic! I'm usually found over in "That Home Site" helping people in the kitches, bathrooms, and flooring forums (I'm a ceramic tile contractor). I came across this thread, though, and thought I'd check it out, and there are so many places mentioned here that I've done work-- from MDI to Vinalhaven and Rockland, To Ogonquit and Wells-- I feel like my "cyber life" and real life just clashed head on!! :-) I used to live up about 1/2 way between Ellsworth and Deer Isle in a little town called Brooklin, but for the last 8 years, I've lived in the Lakes region, presently in Bridgton....See MoreFloor plan comments please!
Comments (13)Here's an option with a 2nd bath but in an efficient plan: http://tightlinesdesigns.com/house/clarke/clarke-i After living in this (1140sqft)space for 12yrs we are adding on. It this your forever home or are you planning on moving after the kids are older? This home worked well for us before kids and even with 1 child, still fine. Forward a few years to two kids and kids wanting friends over, well it's a problem. Here's what's saved us for a spell: Having an upstairs bedroom-DH sometimes works nights and needs it quiet. It's great storage with the kneewall cabinets. 2nd bathroom (upstairs it's tub/not shower) but helps for when we all need to be somewhere at once. Vaulted ceiling in living/dining as it feels bigger. A large yard and covered front porch (sandboxes, balls and toy cars...) We put a large screen TV in my DD's room and daybed so it's often movie time when friends are over as they have so little play space. Transitional pieces of furniture: our coffee table is on industrial wheels and has a countertop insert. It serves as additional eating area, table, or seating with cushions added or we can roll it out of the way for more Thomas the Train floor space. Our laundry is in the kitchen covered by pantry doors-I hate this but there is no other space for it. The doors make it acceptable. Ideally if we had the Master on the main and 2 bedrooms upstairs the addition would not be as pressing an issue. We almost never have people over other than our kids friends. Our space is just too small to entertain well unless it's nice weather. When we do have adults over we pray for sunshine:) I should mention some of our issues are also due to having a boy and girl rather than children capable of sharing a room. Hope this helps. Comments (16)I think you should mock up a 15" wide space blocked in on both sides and see what you think. I think it will be a very cramped beverage center and not very practical. I strongly encourage you to move it to the end, turn it sideways and deepen it to a standard cab. It will be much more useful as a beverage station, esp when you entertain. Check out the beverage station around the corner from the main kitchen that RealHousewifeofNJ has. Yours won't be as wide but a set-up like hers will be more functional than what you're planning, IMO. It's possible that more than 1 person could actually be at it at the same time, plus they wouldn't have to get out of the way when someone wants to access the fridge or freezer. A person takes up more than 15" of counter width; advice is to plan for at least 24" width per person for working and for seating. Moving it also puts the fridge closer to the prep zone, which is a good thing. Even if the seating at the end is only for use during parties, double check that you can find a stool that will fit completely under a 12" seating overhang, legs included. I looked some months ago and I don't recall finding a stool that took up less than a 14" deep footprint. I'm not saying you won't find one. I'm saying that your goal of having a stool "live seamlessly under the counter" may not as easy to achieve as you hope. Comments (5)Your picture isn't showing up for me, but here's my thoughts on some of your questions. You will hate a base blind corner cabinet. They are horrible. You can't see what's in there and have to pretty much crawl in to get anything out(or send in a small child with a miner's hat) When we demo'd our kitchen we found stuff in the corners that I didn't know was in there. This is after I cleared everything out of the kitchen and the sledgehammers came out. The blind corner pullout system makes it easier to use the cab, but wastes a lot of space. I use my over the frig cab for tray storage. The cab is 24" deep. I put very large trays on the bottom of the cab. I have rev-a-shelf tray dividers installed on the shelf every 5 inches for my cookie sheets, jelly roll pans, cake boards, muffin tins, etc. It's easy to pull them down by just grabbing the bottom corner. This set up may not work for shorter cooks, but I'm tall enough to comfortably reach the bottom corner of items on the shelf. Shorter cooks might just do tray dividers and forget the shelf....See Moremagada
