Interesting! We have friends who have rented out rooms via AirBnB at their ranch/farm. Decent house. The people do get separate bedrooms but no private place to lounge around except the rooms. They train horses so they have horses of their own and a large arena and horse trails that you can also hike on. I don't know if they make the horses available to people. They also have chickens and rabbits. It might be fun to stay there if someone is looking for a bit of a farm experience. However, they are about 30 minutes from the nearest town and more like an hour from beaches or anything else one might consider touristy. I don't know what they charge.

We have done some free hosting via Couch-Surfing. My husband and I like to bicycle and have done short multi-night trips on our bikes a few times. So we mainly host cyclists going up/down the coast as we can relate to them although they tend to be more our kid's ages. it's been interesting. Some of them, I'd be glad to host again anytime. Some...not so much.

However, we've never actually stayed with someone else. We are fair-weather cyclists and prefer camping.

When we went to Europe in our youth, we did the thing where you just show up in a town via train and someone at the station has a list of homes with rooms to rent and they call to see if there's an opening and off you go. Most of these were extra rooms, like the kid away at college. It was really enjoyable. Those seem harder to find across The Pond so we've not done that in years as they were increasingly taken over by hostels or people who seemed to be more in it for the money than for the fun of hosting people. I wish we could recreate that experience. Sitting in someone's lovely garden, eating breakfast with them, while discussing politics and cultural differences. It was great! Times change, I guess.

The European experience you describe sounds absolutely ideal, for that time and place. Lucky you to have done that when you could. It doesn't work so well when a family of five lumbers in!

I used to recommend the GH 3 part flora series, too. But, I started using their dry Maxigro and Floramato this year. The price is way lower per gallon, you can buy a 1.5lb container for less than $15, and you don't have to measure with anything but a teaspoon. It also buffers 10 times better. I haven't added any ph up or down once to the tomato rez this year. Last year it was every other day sometimes. Of course, the nutrients aren't the only change I made. I also now have a single, much larger rez as opposed to individual 5 gallon buckets for tomatoes. Much better for maintaining ph and temps. FYI and maybe a non issue in this thread: I switched to Maxibloom for the peppers since the nitrogen seemed so high on Floramato. It's also a dry nutrient. It is much better. So, my 3 commercial favorites have just been narrowed down to GH's Maxigro (all vegetative growth), Maxibloom (peppers and eggplant flowering and fruiting), and Floramato (tomatoes fruiting). PH Meters: Get the cheap liquid drops. I found some disturbing issues with my Milwaukee pH meter. You don't have to worry about whether or not the drops are calibrated or if your battery is dying or your probe glass is crapping out or you're too close to fluorescent lighting. You don't have to buy storage, cleaning, and calibration solutions ($7 to $10 each). You don't have to worry about what happens if you drop it. I know I sound like a General Hydroponics employee, but I'm not associated at all aside from satisfied customer. Anyway, they make drops that are about $7. They last a really long time. @designsaavy, I love my marble, but to be honest, I am pretty careful with it - probably more so than I have to be! My main concern is etching; if you have a really good sealer and pick up spills fairly quickly, staining shouldn't be a huge issue. My daughter sits and eats at our island sometimes, and we haven't had any issues. We do have a few etch spots, but I can't even see them unless I lean down and look from a particular angle. I would definitely recommend getting honed marble over polished, which helps hide any "patina." :)

Lucky him! First time I went to Croatia while in University (so long ago, 1990) we got around by train. Older women were waiting near the trains with pictures of their homes and you chose the nicest place and friendliest lady and stayed there. Dirt cheap. 1990s version of couch surfing I guess, or Airbnb. Here is my thread from January, but I was imagining a car trip for this one. Cesky Krumlov is a great recommendation and worth doing. You can easily fill two or three days in both Vienna and Prague, it is a tough choice. Maybe only do two nights in each if your interest in the drive through the Alps and along the Adriatic is stronger than your city interest. Start in Prague if possible, drive south to CK then through Austria to Vienna. I'm not certain of driving times, but head south to Bled. Bled is beautiful, but very small. If you can stop here for lunch for a couple of hours en route that is enough. You just have to see it, which doesn't take days. One night there if necessary. Drive on to Slovenia's capital Lublijana (spelling off a but, sorry). Lubijana is the capital of Slovenia and is a magical place, full of dragon bridges and beauty. Spend a night here. Then down to Split, you could easily do two days here as you visit the islands of Hvar, etc., from Split. Split is lovely too. On to Dubrovonik, or Mostar (Bosnia) then Dubrovonik, depending on routing and timing. One night and a full day is good for Mostar, at least two for Dubrovnik. Mostar is truly special and so dear to my heart (I worked there after the war, arriving just days after the Dayton Accords). It is a little off the regular tourist track, but it is remarkable and I'm sure you will love it.

I looked at Launderette and liked what I read about it - I will try to go there. I also want to go to the Phoenicia Bakery & Deli on 45th and Burnet Rd, which is close to our BnB. They have muffuletta sandwiches on their menu! We will go to Pappadeaux's for lunch on Friday with our sister. I talked with my sister on Sunday, and it was not a very pleasant conversation - she seemed very testy and argumentative - I think this is because she is having trouble adjusted to her husband being gone. They were married for a long time - I think since 1983 or so, which would make it 40 years. She would never come to visit me without bringing him, once they were together. Near the end, she had to retire from her work in order to take care of him, and now she is no longer working and does not have him to take care of. One of her husband's granddaughters (from Huntington Beach, CA) will be staying at her house while we are in Austin. I don't think I've met her, but I'm sure I would get along with her, although I do not expect to be around her that much. I really want to limit the amount of time I will be around my sister - at least during the time that she will be with Jack's family, as I do not know them that well and am not close to them at all. I do hope that Kevin and I will be able to spend some time with Karen by ourselves, but I don't know how much of that will be possible. I think if there are too many people around at the same time, it could be tense, partly because Jack's family is dysfunctional - my sister's term, not mine. I know his family will still be grieving a lot - as will my sister, and this is a situation that I have very little experience with. I mostly want to stay out of the way so that I can avoid conflict.
