It's been a minute...and I need you, again!

Hello all! After "using" all your insight, expertise, and opinions, my kitchen is almost finally done. I had to step away from these forums, because honestly I was addicted and couldn't make any decisions without searching here first. I am someone that becomes paralyzed when faced with many decisions. We are building a new home and I'm overwhelmed. I understand these are "blessed problems" to have. But, trust me, there have been plenty. Well, they put the granite yesterday and I went today to see it. I only have one word to describe how I feel....underwhelmed!!! I feel so guilty! My hubby has bent over backwards to please me and get everything we wanted. I understand it's an unfinished project, I understand there is more filth than shine, I understand that things have to be fixed, but I was expecting butterflies and not tears. So here are my pics...what do you think? (I don't know how to post more than one at a time) How were your kitchens at this phase? Has HOUZZ ruined me?

Disregard the backsplash...that's just needed for closing due to code. We are working on searching for backsplash.

I think it's very pretty but it's hard to see well from the photo. I think finding the right backsplash will really show off the granite beautifully! It looks both subtle AND interesting - something I think is very hard to do.

For those of you having troubles with cukes and squash, you might want to inter-plant with nasturtiums next time, try it! My garden in 9b is just going to be one year old, or should I rather say, I will be celebrating one year of being the garden's loving custodian....so I have lots of troubles. In march/April I had a jungle of brassicas (both rapas and oleraceas). I had this green explosion and almost ran out of room in the freezer. Turnips, kales, collards, bok choi, beet greens, you name it. When it got warmer the harlequin beetles attacked them and they all died, after I had hopes for their perennialization (a word?). The Harlequin proceeded to suck the jalapenos and the tomatoes, ruining several tomato plants too. I was (am) so afraid to put brassicas on the ground again, until I realized I need to give them sacrificial crops. This started to work to some extent last year, and my fear was that sunflowers would not sprout at this time of the year. Guess what? they did! I now have sunflowers growing and I just planted some kale and mustards near them. Not sure if nasturtiums will do the trick for brassicas but I put them in too. We also got some brussel sprouts trying to germinate in a protected environment (terrarium), I think I will use the plastic cylinders from soft drink bottles that grandad from Louisiana is showing on the cole crops thread. So glad I overcame my fear of trying brassicas again. I still have to successfully grow cauliflowers and broccoli though. We will see how the brussel sprouts do and think about it, my cauliflowers never flowered last year, but the leaves were good....LOL In the mean time, the amaranth is still producing as many greens as I need. They are tougher leaves now that the plants are seeding, so I just cook them longer and they are still acceptable. Whatever tries to attack them gets in turn eaten by a large collection of lady bugs that seem to hang out near them a lot. I am encouraging more lady bugs by planting more and more cilantro. When they reach their end I will still have several dozen pounds of frozen green in the freezer from the spring. After that I hope the cole crops will be ready to harvest, and the harlequins somewhat controlled. So I hope anyways. I was so furious when i found out they are an introduced species! grrrr.....and no predators either, not even chickens will eat them. Anybody knows of other sacrificial crops to deter bugs from cole crops? I will need something after the sunflowers run their course, but I suppose since now I know they will grow at any time, I can keep planting more and more sunflowers. A very handsome looking sacrificial crop at that.....

Gardenia, it is. Ann, your description of it scrambling around are completely dead-on. In fact, the first photo I posted is a cane that's gone up a small cedar tree, is hanging down, and has sent out that glorious cluster of flowers. How do things get by the road like this? My guess on this one is that this is probably a very derelict old house site -- so far gone that there's no trace of the house. The rose is growing beside the service road, and there's cleome coming up in the sunnier areas. This rose had scrambled over and among the poison ivy and honeysuckle, and was heading for the road. The two little rooted pieces that I got were probably run over at one time, as someone pulled off onto the shoulder -- and they very happily healed that injury by growing roots and new little canes. Florence, your Gardenia looks just like this rose. The thing that seals it for me is how the petsla on the open bloom sort of droop. like they're too delicate to stay upright. Your pictures are lovely. What is the pink rose you're growing with it? Berrytea, from what I've seen of the photos of your rose, I'm not sure it's Mary Lovett. I just went down to check out the buds on my ML, and they're definitely white. This is a good time of year to do comparisons, since the once-bloomers will be blooming, and we can put our heads together and try again to come up with an ID for you. (I have just about every wichurana rambler I can get my hands on -- they're still small, but we can still use them for comparison.) Can you get more photos of your rose this year? Kathy, we have no tornado damage right here. The one you see on the news was about 5 miles south of us, just beyond Geico on Rt. 17. I came across the scene the other day, as I was hitting a back road route to avoid the awful traffic. It's surreal to see the walls of a house missing, yet clothes still hanging in the family's walk-in closet. There was a second tornado just south of downtown Fredericksburg that took down a farmer's barn and part of a warehouse, tore off a couple of warehouse roofs, and leveled hundreds of trees. That one missed my other house by about 3 miles. It's been a very stormy week around here. eibren, those photos do look a lot like my rose. I have Penelope, though she's still a baby. Aren't her flowers much smaller? The ones on my rose are 3" or so. I'm gonna have to check out all these poison ivy remedies you all recommend. Five years of warfare here on the farm has rid the place of most of it, but I still come across it from time to time (like when I'm rustling). Kay, everything looks really beautiful. Your garden is a delight even when the daylilies are not blooming. Plus you know I love the zinnias. Those gardenshots with the zinnias do have so much color and look so great. I love how it all looks. I have been having lots and lots of butterflies on my zinnias lately too. And also hummers and goldfinches. They all love the zinnias. Your new redone iris section looks good and I know how much work it is to divide and move those iris! Salty Skipper and Heleman are my favorites of the daylily blooms. I am amazed that you still HAVE blooms!

Hello! I am back on the mainland and in my beloved zone 7. I am eagerly awaiting spring and hope to get my hands dirty again and get my garden cleaned up this year. The hardiest plants survived 3 tenants over 4 years (plus one summer of my own neglect while I unpacked) which has left quite a bit of space for new inspiration. At least the kids are old enough now to help! And they like gardening too - My daughter is really into it for the bugs so we managed to start a small butterfly garden for her at the end of last summer. I have a new baby coming in the beginning of April so I don't think I will be doing too many seeds inside this year. I think however I will used an unspent Christmas gift to buy one of those pre-planned shade gardens for one of my long term problem spots. (I think I can get the kids to put it in for me.) Not very creative but I didn't have time to think plants this winter. - besides that it is amazing how much I have forgotten of North American plants. I once was so foolish as to jest at a friend who had moved around and had trouble remembering which plants were perennials vs. annuals. Now here I am with a slightly more "mature" brain struggling to keep them straight after my time in the tropics. I have bantered enough. I am glad to be back and am looking forward to the next swap! It's going to be a very nice kitchen. Once you have your things in there, with the lights shining on your cabinets and counters, the appliances in, and some folks sitting at the island it is going to feel great.

Is that seam right in front of the cook top? I don't like it no matter where it is. There could be a better match of stone pattern.

It looks beautiful! I almost gasped when I scrolled down and saw your first picture. Your dark cabinetry is striking and I really like the granite with it. I agree with laughable, once you can make it yours you will love it!

You have some beautiful details in your cabinetry. Your kitchen will be gorgeous, however, I understand your feelings of being slightly underwhelmed. I'm there too with mine also. I hope to gain some insight from your post responses.

I don't have a remodelled kitchen, new build or anything, but looking at those two un-related pieces of granite and the seam would drive me crazy. I would want a much better match than the one they installed.

Although I am not crazy about the seam, I will say I think your kitchen is going to be beautiful! I love the dark cabinets and light counters together. I think you are having a hard time envisioning the completed kitchen. Once you get your backsplash and appliances in, I think you will love it. A backsplash is like the icing on the cake, the last finishing touch that will pull it all together beautifully. Its lovely - seriously!

It's like getting dressed for a party. You have your dress on, but no makeup, shoes, scarf, jewelry or purse. You will get more excited when the bling starts to arrive. Bling is the appliances, lighting fixtures, backsplash and drawer pulls. Until you put them on, you won't get all excited.

The exciting part is just about to start.

The seam is not the best, but I really like the look of your kitchen. A simple backsplash, appliances & hardware will be icing on the cake. I think it looks great. I understand a bit of a let down, but you will get there.

I agree with this. the seam could be better - talk to them about it. watch for more input on it. I'm not the best on help there cause I don't have granite and have no plans for it either - so no experience in it but what I read on here and see in pics.

I do think it is great granite tho. Beautiful with your cabs. Do understate the BS so not to overwhelm the granite. It is beautiful in its simplicity.
and I'm sure the granite is even better than I think but I'm viewing it sideways... lol!

Thank you all!! Your kind words are making me take a second look at my kitchen. Sigh...I was just looking forward to this for so long that the lack of WOW surprised me. Good to know many of you felt this way at this stage. I will keep you all posted with new pics as things move along.
As far as the seam, I am kind of furious! However, I can't blame my fabricator 100%. We went specifically to pick the layout of how the slab was going to be cut. I was adamant about cutting the slab at that location because I wanted the cooktop to cut out my least favorite part of the slab. I didn't realize how different the merge of the slab would look. I am going to ask him to come back and work on the actual seam, maybe polish or something.

It looks so elegant, and very high end with your cabinet/top contrast. Beautiful kitchen and as others have said once you install the hardware, that gorgeous faucet etc. it should come together to make you so proud and happy every time you use it.

I love it! You don't need everything in your kitchen to be a star. Subtle is good. I think the granite is very pretty and once you put your cooktop in, it will take away that big contrast area as well as draw your eye away from the seam. I was really unhappy about them putting a seam right in front of my sink because to me it was such a visible area. But now it is such a non issue that I just ran in to the kitchen to see if it is actually there.
One thing I did learn in decorating: underwhelmed is better than overwhelmed. I bought a real fancy backsplash with the help of a friend and the store "decorator". Brought home a few pieces of it for a mock up and hated it. I ended up with plain old cheap subway tile and love it. It is the perfect backdrop for my "stuff", and I have more flexibility in other things - wall color, towels, appliances, etc. Your kitchen is beautiful, enjoy it.
