granite install...is this normal?

Ok, so we are getting our granite installed...I walked in to find them mopping up water from all over the floor and my cabinets? Ok water might ne to clean but to have it all over and need several rags???!! Is it normal.
also have Whitehaven sink. They put the granite down and then proceded push the the sink into place!! I thought the granite was placed on top of the sink. Turns out they cut the hole opening wrong, the sides of granite lay over the sides of the sink. I told them it was wrong. When they taking out sink again they scratched the sides all up!! :( omg! I really want yhis to be done.
Ian the granite supposed to lay on top of the sink so this does not happen..so stressful!!

It would help if you posted a picture.

If the hole opening is cut wrong, that needs to be corrected. If they scratched up your sink installing it, they need to replace/repair that as well. Don't just sit back and watch them destroy your property. Ask them to stop and explain to you what it is they are doing. If you are still in doubt, call their supervisor before allowing them to proceed.

It is not normal to have lots of rags to wipe up water, but things do happen.

How can the sides of the granite lay over the sides of the sink, yet they are able to push the sink into place? I'm not understanding something.

I've shown up for jobs and had customers say "I read your reviews. What's with the lady with the caulk?" I just shrug my shoulders, roll my eyes, and get to work without saying a word. Customers are much more sophisticated than many contractors give them credit for being. They worry to death about a poor review and shouldn't. I wouldn't remove a single poor review I have; they are pure gold as far as credibility. The customers I want have a fully operational kook detector.

Hi Mary! So sorry I just now saw your comment. I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble. It’s so frustrating when you’re SO excited for the crown jewel of the kitchen and it isn’t perfect.... or what you were expecting anyway as nothing in life is perfect. Even if the company is committed to fixing it, it’s still frustrating to not be able to enjoy it right away and go through the process all over again. I hope that they resolve it for you and that everything goes perfect and smooth from here on out for you. I’m sure it will be gorgeous when it’s done. Please post a photo!!! I think for me the biggest reason it bugs me is because the company made False promises. We already went through a horrible granite situation over the summer and ripped out our previous granite countertops to get these and lost $5k doing it and then paid for these to get redone and the company promised everything would be perfect. No wall gaps, all overhangs the same (within 1/16-1/8 inch) because of their technology they use and we also went without countertops while they were being fabricated because I wanted them to laser without any countertops to ensure that everything was measured properly. Then they get installed and things are not what I was told they would be... so although it may not be an issue to someone else- it kind of is a big deal to me because of everything we’ve been through with this kitchen renovation and what we were promised. It’s been one thing after another and nothing has been in our favor!

I have never experienced that much of a variance with any of my fabricators. Typically 1/8"-1/4" because of wall variances is "normal" because the possibility of the walls being wonky. But the overhang seems strange to me. A CNC machine is only as good as the measurements entered in to the machine. Did the company come out and make a template before fabricating or did you provide the measurements?

Thanks for responding, Millworkman. The brand is Happy Feet. Professional installers did the job. The flooring was laid throughout the entirety of the ground floor (kitchen, laundry room, living room, bathroom). The gapping appears randomly, I'd say in about 4 to 5 places. My main concern is if water can get in between the gaps when cleaning the floor.

For a farm sink, the cabinet maker/installer is the one who installs it level with the top of the cabinets. Before the template occurs. Not sure what else is going on with the unclear description, but if it involves water in your kitchen, it's not good.

Sounds like they were trying to cut something on site with a wet saw. Maybe they were pouring water on a blade.

When my granite was installed, I sat and watched the whole thing (wasn't going to let anyone near my cabinets with heavy slabs of rock without me watching!) . . . and there was not any water anywhere. A few small rags with acetone to clean off excess caulk.

My cabinet installers were responsible for installing the whitehaven sink flush before templating.

I agree that they were likely using a wetsaw to cut something on site. I'd definitely plan to be in the room from now on whenever this crew is there. And, have plenty of drop cloths and plastic available. . .

Ok, so here is the sink, sorry I did not explain to well, What they had done is cut the granite so that it was over the edges of the sink...with the Whitehaven I really wanted some of the edge of the sink to be exposed. They fixed it, see photo.
I was really concerned that they had no idea what they were doing...and I still am not quite sure.
They said because we had no seam they had to install sink/granite the way they did it. ...who knows?? I don't!!
I'm happy it over! Granite is in and I just want to move beyond the kitchen!! I love this site! I can at least vent.

sounds like they made the sink cutout wrong and fixed on site which is possible if an installer is also a skilled fabricator.
If you were home when they were cutting you would know it because sawing the stone is VERY noisy and also creates a big mess. check the sink cabinet; if they were sawing there it's very likely there is still some small residue of granite dust. Normally on a repair like this installers would take the part outside where the dust and water can be much less of an issue.
