Tacky Paint and Blocking Issues

I painted my front door last year with Benjamin Moore paint which never seemed to dry to a hard coat and instead kept a somewhat "tacky" feel. Even though I followed instructions regarding dry times between coats and used a good primer, I still had problems with the paint sticking and peeling in a few places where it touched another surface. I used the Regal Select Exterior High Build paint in a satin finish in a burgundy color.

I am now getting ready to paint some trim and interior doors (in white) and don't want to experience these same issues. Is it the paint? The satin finish I chose? The technique? What can I do to prevent this happening again? I really don't want to use an oil based paint or a high gloss paint (but will use semi-gloss if necessary).

It's not the paint at all! It's the color!

A deep color like Burgundy has a LOT of liquid colorant added, & thus will take a loooooonnnngg time to cure fully, evenly, all the way thru.
This kinda color may "feel" dry to a light touch later in the day....BUT....to fully cure...requires WEEKS.

Blocking-
This is kind of a side-effect of curing paint!
When newer paint is pressed against another surface, like a closed, tighter-fitting entry-door, it will often be "pulled-off". This is because the new paint isn't even remotely cured yet, OR bonded very well to the surface.

This "latching-on" process takes a few days to achieve full bonding. Again, FULL CURE-through takes much longer. Other variables like coat-thickness, humidity, air-temp, & air-exchanges are part of the game too!!

For your interior job, use S/G ideally, but Satin is ok. SHEEN doesn't affect curing rates. Leave the doors open as much as possible the first month. This will sound goofy, but use painters-tape & apply some wax-paper strips thru the jamb-area if doors HAVE to be shut, & close tightly. Maybe just the 1st week for this...!

What a nice gift. Valentines day? Most people who do decoupage profesionally (or who have tried to like me,lol) coat with urethane not glue for exactly this reason. On the other hand I keep a bottle of Mod Podge or Aileens on hand for projects like sticking calendar pics to cardboard recycling boxes and I haven't had that problem with either of them. So called decoupage glue is a combination of white glue (like elmers regular) urethane and water. First: Let it dry some more! I'm wondering if you've got too much on in which case you may need a lot more drying time. Have you used so much that you could wipe it with a slightly damp face cloth without damaging the imagery, then let dry? If not don't and either way once its had more drying time such as another day in warm dry place with the pages separated so air can circulate, I would try Krylon Krystal Clear spray on one part of one page (mask the rest and spray a corner) and see if that helps. 2 light coats let dry between. I emphasize that you need to let the glue dry all that it can first. Krylon Crystal clear is my fave spray urethane, and the one I use to spray images before gluing so the ink doesn't run. I have also used it on quickie projects to protect the image, and it doesn't seem to react with the glue, tho I haven't put it on a totally glue covered image. good luck kathy

I'm not saying I don't dust down the walls before painting. But, I did spray paint hundreds of homes that were not dusted down and never had problems or callbacks later on. I believe the reason for this is that the sprayer is its own duster...in other words, the force of the incoming spray blows away all the dust before it can be trapped under the paint. And yes, rolling is very important...we would always spray the paint on and backroll it. As for normal everyday sanding and painting, when I sand a patch on a wall, the dust falls to the ground because of gravity..hardly any dust is actually staying on the wall. What is left can be easily dusted away with a dustbrush or broom. If the drywall is slick, then that might not be drywall? Another option is to put drywall over the existing walls but for that you would need to remove baseboards and trim but this option isn't as messy as removing wallboards down to the studs.

Thanks Graywings for Behr's phone number! I called Behr technical assistance and followed their suggestions with success. It was a lot of work to get the sticky/tacky mess off the floor. It was the dried full strength cleaner on the floor causing the mess. 1. Power washed the floor, not successful, did not remove the mess. 2. Mixed the Behr degreaser cleaner according to instructions and allowed to stay on for 20 minutes, keeping floor wet. 3. Scrubbed the floor with a Hoover floor scrubber. 4. Power washed the floor again to rinse and get rid of the cleaner residue. The floor is dull and still has a splotched appearance, sticky/tacky is gone. Nice to have a clean floor again. Hubby is out of the dog house for now, or I should say until he makes a mess again!! He had to do most of the work since my back is out of whack! Maybe he will think to do an ounce of prevention next time!

It's called blocking and is exacerbated by high humidity. I suspect that the added Floetrol is contributing to the problem. Certainly polyurethanes are less susceptible to blocking but if the coating is white, you might see a color change.

After the paint is "dry to the touch" you can dust the contact areas with baby powder or cornstarch.

Powder can be an option, yes...but in dark colors, I'd "stick with" wax-paper. As I mentioned, a deep color takes much longer to "harden-off".
Light colors & Whites cure faster, but to be safe, the wax-paper is a little safer.

I have had this problem with benj moore paint. ny client wabted to use this brand this project on windows and its very tacky . i never had this problem with behr
