Well, that's a strange thing to see, for sure.

I hope you're super careful when you stop at any rest area, especially alone at night, sleeperblues. I think about stuff like that every time I travel alone. Those restrooms are the perfect place to be ambushed by a robber or worse.

I think I would have taken that temp license plate number and report your thoughts to the police since you saw him there twice. Strange.

DH and I were just talking about a similar topic yesterday, after watching gay character 'Barrow' struggle in his isolation on "Downton Abbey".

We're old enough to have been really naive about 'confused' genders as we were growing up. Now we look back and recognize that so-and-so HAD to have been 'other than straight' -- males and females. How impossible their lives were!

I never thought twice about two women living together. My widowed grandmother had shared a house with another widower. Women often had fewer financial resources; of course they'd pitch in together. Men didn't have the same 'cover'.

I first recognized a pair of lesbians in our DS's grammar school. One was the principal; the other was a long-tenured teacher. They were very discreet, but the light gradually dawned on me when they did *everything* as a pair -- events, vacations, etc.

DH and I exchanged knowing glances about an old school friend of his when we ran into him at O'Hare years later. We showed him photos of our DS. He showed us photos of...his cars. He's since died. I wish we could all have been free to speak honestly.He was a nice man. We think we are nice, too.

Years ago my hairdresser eventually began to drop hints. He was restoring a house downstate and showed me photos of the progress. Some shots showed his friends who were helping with the work. Then shots were of just one other man. Their relationship became clear. And it was *just fine* -- so much easier between him and me. I'd always mention my DH. Now he could mention his.

Yeah, really! I grew up in LA and I remember as a teenager in the 60s, gays and cross-dressers were seen and easily found all over Hollywood. The same was true of almost everything else too (easily found all over Hollywood).

Back then, the wildness and weirdness seemed exciting and exotic. Today, many of those same things seem much more normal and even tame.

In the past week there were a pair of twins who "came out" on YouTube. They called their dad and broke the news over the phone.

He's a big burly guy who works at a prison, and anyone with eyes could see that they are gay. But it made for good "tv"

sad to say they probably troll the rest center for "tricks"..we had one rest stop on I75 between Toledo and Detroit that was actually closed...it was like the local hangout, and at the time aids was still in the news big time...

Traveling alone or with another person, I never stop at rest stops that only have one car there. At night I would only stop at a gas station or cafe. Living in the SF Bay Area so many years, I saw lots of transgender and cross-dressers. A friend here in Iowa asked me how I can tell so quickly that a person or couple are gay, I can just tell.

This thread was about transvestites, a very unusual segment of the population. Gays and lesbians are a normal part of the society, happily able to be themselves in most communities.

Alisande, I doubt he'd be after me, I drive a Honda Civic. Yes, I am very careful usually when I stop, but after a big old cup of coffee I needed to stop. All of the other rest stops are actually much brighter and safer to stop at, also with more cars. I guess I'll just stop at a gas station.

Funny story, once when I was with my DD and she was about 13 years old I wanted to stop at this store in my hometown called Transformations because I liked the glittery gowns in the window. Yup, the "lady" working there was not a lady. We didn't buy anything, lol.

They're a normal and not unusual part of the population where I live. Maybe where you live too. Maybe some people you know do that in the privacy of their homes.

Not all transvestites (cross dressers) are gay, many are not. Many are also not trans-gender people (those with ambiguous or uncomfortable gender identities). And of course, most of those from both groups, and most gay people (just as most heteros) are neither prostitutes (sex for money) nor promiscuous.

I feel safer stopping at a McD's or another fast food restaurant. I quit doing rest stops long ago after someone got murdered along the interstate we used to frequent on our trips.
