should I use the aux heat and lockout the heatpump

I live in Pittsburgh Pa. temps are getting to be around 14 degrees with colder wind chill factors...earlier this yr with the help of 2-3 folks on this forum I purchased a 3.5 trane heat pump and airhandler and also a tcont800 series touch screen thermostat I think everything went well. The installer told me to set my temps and let the thermostat handle everything, well as it has gotten colder I notice that the outside unit runs and I believe I am getting supplemental ht from the heat strip (as the air coming out of vents are a touch warmer) however it can run 40 minutes off and on in an hrs time. If I put thrmstat on aux I get much warmer air and shorter run times 9-12 minutes at a clip.. What is the most economical way to do this/ (tiger is always a great help and I thnk you)
