tol kitchenaid dw vs miele classic

Which would you rather have?

KDTE704DSS vs G4225. The kitchen aid is about $100 more. They both have the third rack and delay start. Those are my must haves. The kitchenadi is 39db vs 46db in the miele but I've read 46 do is quite enough. I'm not too concerned with it being super silent but anything is better than my old DW.

Before you buy any dishwasher you need to take your dishes to the showroom and try them in different models. They have different racking setups, and often people find that the narrowly spaced tines on Miele and other European models just won't work for them. If KA's tine layout is going to work the best, then you should get that.

Other than that, the KA model you are considering is much more feature rich than the Miele you're considering, but the Miele is better quality. I have that Miele, it's an excellent dishwasher. However, your choice of models to compare seems odd. You're not comparing apples to apples, that Miele is bottom of the line and sells for around $1000 and I believe the TOL KA is more like $1600. If you would be willing to pay that much for a KA, why not pay that much for an upper middle of the line Miele model that will have both the quality and the features? And if the BOL Miele has all the features you want, no need to pay a premium for a lesser quality product unless the Miele racking doesn't work with your dishware.

Noise... I wouldn't worry much about it. Any high end dishwasher is going to be very quiet and anyone who is used to an older model will be pleased with the noise levels. The Miele Classic is more than quiet enough.

You'll want to compare KA and Miele's execution of the top racks. I have heard that KA and Bosch 3rd racks are inferior to Miele (who originated the idea). I can't confirm/deny that since i didn't look at KA/Bosch 3rd rack models, but you'll want to look into it.

Hi hvtech!

Thank you for your thorough reply. You're always so kind with your time. My plan was to look at the miele and I was waffling between the Classic and the crystal model with the water softener. there is a $300 difference regularly but right now they have a 25% off the Classic bringing it to $1125 (in Canada....everything here is much more expensive than the U.S.).

But at one of the appliance stores, they are having a sale on the kitchnaid. So the TOL is for $1219. Looks sleek with the handle and has a small screen to display remaining time. However I was leaning towards the miele because of everything I've read here and don't really need all the other features of the KA.

As for fitting of dishes...our old dishwasher was a whirlpool. The interior tines are similar to the kitchenaid so I'm used to it but I did look at the Miele times and they had some dishes there at the showroom to play with and they also look like they would fit my dishes. I took a look at the bosch and do feel their tines are very close together. My brother also has a bosch that had given them some problems but I really didn't like their interior spacing so I already dismissed them from my consideration. So I'm wondering which one I should buy and would love your opinion.

Sorry to hear about the KA issues. I was concerned as well when I got a KUDE70FVSS model in February 2010. The vent is located on the left side of the top edge of the door, next to the controls. It is not on the side of the door. KA's are deep and most will not fit flush under normal depth cabinets I hear. We have about a 1 1/4 inch granite countertop overhang which happens to be about the thickness of the door. So in our case we pushed the DW back until the door was lined up with the cabinet fronts but the door is completely underneath the granite countertop. It actually looks pretty good. (Our old WP was flush mounted with cabinet matching panels installed) We put the moisture strip supplied by KA on the bottom of the granite, for no good reason but figured why not. There is a small strip of cabinet under the granite that forms the top of the cabinet opening for the DW that is, of course, wood. If I put the moisture strip on it, it showed since the strip is a shiny material, so I left it off. I kept an eye on it for months to see what happened and I have never seen any moisture or noticed any steam coming from the vents at all, regardless of the time of day we run the DW. The wood under the granite and all around the DW looks fine and has never shown any sign of getting wet. Not sure what system they are using in this model but apparently it does not suffer from the same problems as the side vent models.

It turns out that the Crystal was $100 more than we expected. Then after we paid for it, it turned out you couldn't just buy the cutlery tray you had to switch a version that needed the panel which then boosted the price considerable. So we canceled the order. Then we found they billed the card and the money stayed in suspense for almost 2 weeks. This was $1424. Sigh. So far the Miele Classic with the cutlery tray in black makes the most sense. We almost had a La Perla for $1695 but it was in stainless. Just for the record I'm doing most of the dishes by hand. Since I pulled the dishwasher (and wired up a socket) we had no draining racks the VDW got me a draining rack ! It's curious I'm starting to wonder why we need a dishwasher. I only wonder about the latch on the Classic. One I saw wouldn't close another was hard to close. Still, it seems like it's adjustable. Larry

jeng - I don't think KA dishwashers are more expensive than idendical featured Miele's. Miele in general is one of the most expensive brands in the U.S. market due to quality of construction, materials, weak dollar, high German production costs, and snob appeal. On which is bettter, that depends on the end user, but do not fall in to the American trap of bigger is better. Does the thing do what you need and how well/easy does it do it? How long will it last and what service is backing it up? My granddad's got an aircraft sized Buick that seat 4 less comfortably than my Mother's tiny Lexus, and I'm sure you don't want to compare dealer experiences for sales and service. Mando's advice is sound, Miele's will allow you to put more dishes in less space b/o the basket configurations. The build quality on the Miele is much better. Now, you may not like that Miele's don't have a grinder, don't use a heat element to dry, and may not be readily sold and serviced in your area.

I think which one you'd prefer comes down to very different rack layouts. Both are excellent machines. The Miele has a top (3rd) rack divided into three sections; the outer sections can slide inwards toward the center or be removed. The center section can be lowered or raised. The center rack can hold larger plates than the Thermador - some dinner plates will fit if you drop the rack to the lowest setting. The left side of the rack is very flexible with separate folding bars and cup racks. The lower rack is unique and very well designed, so it can hold either large plates or four rows of glasses, again with folding bars and cup racks that can be placed at either of two heights. There is a rotating spray arm above the top rack rather than just a rotating center spinner used on Thermador, which may account for the claimed better cutlery cleaning. The Thermador 3rd rack always stays in one piece, but the left and right sides can be dropped, and every second tine can be folded on the center portion. The center rack is configured to hold smaller plates in the front and larger plates or bowls toward the back, or you can fold down the pegs for a flatter surface. The right side has folding cup racks, and you may find that glasses placed in the second-to-rightmost row won't stay up unless the cup racks are folded down. A clever door design that's very thin at the top allows for a deeper center rack (front to back) except for a small area where the detergent dispenser protrudes. The lower rack has a good design that allows every second peg to be folded down to allow for large bowls rather than thin plates. The rearward half of the rack can be set up to hold either plates or two rows of tall/wine glasses and one row of cups atop them. All of the tines can be folded down to create a flat surface (without having to remove a large insert as with the Miele), and even though there's a 3rd rack for utensils, a basket for the lower rack is still provided. This has a brilliant design that lets the cutlery basket be placed almost anywhere on the lower rack, and (i think) the basket can also be split in half so you can use only half of it, or arrange it in a 1x8 matrix rather than a 2x4. But if you need to use most of the lower rack for glasses rather than plates, the Miele still has a better setup. I have good photos of both of these that would be describe these better than any words could but I can't find them right now. Both machines have illuminated interiors, but the Miele has white LEDs whereas the Thermador uses blue, which looks cool but may be less useful as illumination.

No problem! If you think your dishes will work in the Miele and you don't care about the extra KA features I would definitely get the Miele. I know what you mean about the little cycle indicator display on the outside of the KA, I like that too. You could always get a Miele with front controls to see time remaining. I believe the front control configuration is cheaper as well.

I've mentioned this before - but make sure you check out their warranty details. Specifically who services the units if there are problems.

I have appliances (KA/Sharp) that are warranty serviced by a third party company. And some (LG) that are serviced directly by the manufacturer.

My experience is that it's a much better experience with appliances that are serviced directly by the manufacturer. Follow up is better, satisfaction is better, speed of resolution is better.

My KA third party repair experience was disappointing. My LG direct repair experience was 200% better.
