I just had a motion detector switch put in the kitchen for one set of lights and I have 2 dogs; one of which is 100+ pounds and roughly 20 inches tall and they do not turn the light on. Additionally, there is a switch you can either have it off, on or motion sensor.

My current home has these. For the life of me I see no difference between the two. Other than the rockets take up more space as a switch vs the toggle. I realize the switch plates are same size. If you want decorative switch plate covers. Then do the toggle. I think rocker are better for the elderly.

We just put rocker switches in our house, I've always had the traditional toggle until now. (We went with these inadvertently, my husband misunderstood the electrician.) :) That being said, I like these rocker switches better for one reason, if my arms are full of groceries or laundry baskets I can flip the lights on easily with my elbow. I like the look of the traditional toggle, but I have to admit, these have come in handy.

We went with rocker switches and regular outlets. The rocker switches are much easier to clean than toggles (in our opinion anyway). The only motion sensor light we put in was in the laundry room and we installed push button auto light switch in the door frames on all of our walk in closets

Rockers are considered much more amenable to aging in place because you don't need to actually use your fingers to turn them off and on.

I sometimes mix, depending. If the room is going to be painted a certain color or wallpapered and I don't want the large paddle switch to stand out, I might use a toggle since it's smaller and shows less. Particularly if there is a switch in an unusual place not adjacent to the door frame.

Having lived with both, I like toggles because the motion is more natural. With rockers you have to push back and swipe as you go by the switch, with rockers it's a simple swipe. And I can do it with my elbow, too, or even the edge of the laundry basket :)

My dad has buttons, but they are kind on an angle so it's not a straight push button, it's part swipe, maybe it's more like a rocker but it rocks only one direction. Anyway, they are illuminated which is really nice at night, or when you go down in the basement! After 47 years, some of the illuminations don't work anymore, don't know if they can be replaced,,but it doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I really like my toggles with a dimmer!

I grew up with decora (rocker) switches, but my current apartment has toggle switchines.

I miss my decora switches - so much easier to turn on/off (eg with an elbow). They also make them in quite a variety of colors these days. I find them prettier than old-style toggles.

Interesting/random fact: I recently had the nub of a toggle switch break off when I flicked the light on! It was in a kitchen and I suspect the old apartment wiring was running a little hot, aging the plastic and making it brittle.

I think this is basically a matter of taste so it's difficult to be objective.

Personally I find toggle switches practical but not pretty. I went with touch panels and Legrande Adorne switches and outlets in Magnesium with stainless steel plates for a very modern look.

We've got all toggles now, but I'm thinking about using vintage-style push buttons in the public areas. They'll fit our vintage decor better, but they are expensive. I've never used them, and I'm curious what they are like. There must be a reason they fell out of favor- maybe too expensive? I guess I'll buy one, and live with it for a while before investing in the dozen switches I would need.
