Woodworking Experts:Please help with a MDF wood question.....
Comments (3)I think you're looking for a biochemist rather than a woodworker on this one. I know that I'm thoroughly unqualified to analyze those numbers in anything like an authoritative manner. Nevertheless, my understanding is that formaldehyde is, and has been for a long time, an extremely common presence in all sorts of building materials. Unless your house was specially built by someone who spared no expense and bent over backwards to avoid formaldehyde-laden materials, it seems unlikely that one cabinet, sealed inside a heavy film finish, would have much impact on the overall formaldehyde levels in the house. As to the small size of the room, consider that any given person will not be spending extended periods of time in that room, and that most of the time the door will be open so the air in the room will mix with the air in the rest of the house. Anytime the heat or AC is running, air will be circulated in and out of that room by force. Unless I knew that I or someone in my family was especially sensitive to the stuff, I wouldn't worry over this for a moment....See Morelet's pretend...$ not a factor! cabinetry-mdf/plywood?!? help!
Comments (27)In addition to pricing out the specified cabinet construction, you NEED to go see the types of cabinets that you are considering. I looked at some "custom cabinetry" that came in less than 1/2 of the what I ended up buying but the construction, the finish and the quality of the work was not what I was willing to accept. They used baltic plywood, blah blah blah but the fact was they just did not look good nor have the high quality of workmanship that I wanted. I knew immediately that I would be sacrificing the quality of workmanship at the reduced price. Custom does not mean good quality! It simply means that they make it to order. There is a feel to how the cabinets look and handle when you open the doors and drawers..... It could be the little things like the type of hardware they use for their shelves, what type of finish they do on the interiors of the boxes, how tight the tolerances are, how nicely the drawers line up etc. 1/4 inch tolerance (gaps) versus 1/8 inch tolerance is a big difference in how the cabinets look. They can tell you that they do dovetailed hardwood drawers but I have seen plenty of badly done dovetailed drawers. Again, you need to see the quality of the work. It is better to see a home that has been used for a few weeks to months, rather than in the final stages of construction. It is better for you to see how it "wears". If the cabinets are not wearing well that quickly after construction, then you don't go with the company (a reason for one company I rejected) A reasonable cabinet maker should be able to find you to a happy customer that would be wiling to open their door as a reference. Good luck!...See MoreBathroom vanity - Painted MDF vs Thermofoil
Comments (7)Hi! If you have the option of using water resistant MDF that would be the option we would have you select. If thermofoil and "regular" MDF are the only two options you have, thermofoil in the long run will have better moisture resistance then the MDF. Both types of cabinetry do have their own pros and cons. Thermofoil will discolor over time and are harder to fix if there is any damage. MDF does not handle water well if it is not moisture resistant, it will degrade. Again if water resistant MDF is not an option, in the long run, we would take discoloration over cabinetry falling apart. Hope this helps! Comments (8)Thanks for your input on Duravit Sabrina. I found a Duravit vanity with a drawer that is only 11" tall! Now to see if I can actually view it anywhere. I seem to find the needle in a haystack items that can only be purchased online. I really appreciate being able to touch something like this before buying. I was surprised that Durvit doesn't seem to have a showroom in NYC - only in Asia, Europe, and Africa. Perhaps they are sold more internationally and maybe that is why I can't find any reviews on US retailer websites. Might also be why they make a lot of options for tiny spaces....See MoreUser
