Do you ever have a day that just goes well?

Today was one of those days.

I was at mom's to get her trash out (tomorrow is trash day). I gave her elderly cat his kidney medication, cleaned up a bit, switched out her laundry, and noted something odd. Mom's washer has been stalling due to "off balance" alarms consistently. I was gearing up to call in the Sears repair guy when I noticed a thin board by the washer.

I went upstairs and asked mom what it was for. She said she'd found it beneath the washer. I immediately figured that a leg of the washer had been on that board...and now, having jiggled off of it, was now off balance. I replaced the board, and the washer is fine. : ) I ran her washer through a "clean" cycle and it didn't alarm once!

I managed to trouble shoot her email program, as a couple of emails hadn't been able to send. Somehow, she'd gotten knocked off of her wireless system.

I am grateful that she is adventurous enough to email folks...so many in her age group are not.

I am grateful that I still have her. Her cousin (one year younger) just received a terminal cancer diagnosis. She is not going to have chemo treatments , so my mom really is the last of her generation in her family.

Anyway, it was a good day.

It wasn't till I read your post that I realized... I really am a caregiver now. And yes, I do have a lot of days that go really well.

I moved in my mom and sister last June. Mom is elderly and a stroke survivor, sis was moms caregiver for a long time- but seriously destroyed her shoulder a year ago. So since I had the space in my home, my DH agreed and we moved them in. They help out with the bills and some light housekeeping and yardwork (mom loves to weed the herb garden and sis loves the riding mower to mow the yard), and I get to make sure they are safe and taking proper care.

So yeah, I get days where everything goes right. Guess I didn't really realize how often that does not happen and how grateful I am when it does till I read this post.

Sometimes it's small went rights. Mom ate breakfast when I suggested it instead of getting snappy about how she can take care of herself. Sis didn't do something that re-injured her shoulder. I was able to get all the farmwork done without any complications.

BeesNeeds, you ARE a caregiver!

Today was so good, because so often, I arrive at mom's and just sort of look for what needs doing, and not really focusing on being with her.

She's received so much bad news lately, and I am just grateful that she's still here.

My mom has had a couple of strokes, too.

So great that your DH was on board for bringing mom and sis into the home. I think we all have talents we can offer, no matter how old or infirm we might be.

Aside from some hanging baskets on my porch, I did not put anything in pots this year because of the time spent watering. I had big pots of roses which were killed by this unusually cold winter and did not replace them. I am not adding anything new except to fill in existing beds - just getting to be too much work and not enough fun. I have started adding more evergreens and flowering shrubs to my flower beds to simplify things. I am hoping by really filling the beds full it will choke out some of the weeds. It can get overwhelming with everything else we all have going on in our lives. Oh - and I am also trying to learn to live with "less than perfect".

I have been vegetable gardening since 1980, so that's a long time. About 4 years of that time, I didn't garden. This year was going well, then we just had a groundhog show up to eat my newly planted and growing well, broccoli and the brussels sprouts we were waiting for all season. Lettuce too. So now we are working on what to do about him before next spring rolls around. It's always something. I look forward to winter and I do need that down time. Usually by the time spring comes around, I'm enthusiastic all over again. But if I had a lot of frustration and bad harvests for multiple years, then yes, I'd probably have to ask myself is it worth it? I'd definitely take a whole season off if you feel like you are dreading it. I did that for 3 years, because I had witch grass in my vegetable garden patch and I couldn't cope with it any more and just left it for two years. Then I came up with a new idea of how to deal with it, using plastic to solarize the soil for a full season and that did the trick. The next year, I was really enthusiastic and felt triumphant having solved what seemed like an unsolvable problem. Doesn't hurt to take some time off.

WOW thanks so much! I must say something you all may laugh at but here goes. I have not been feeling well (with a bad cough) this past Sunday my daughter found 5 black swallowtails in their first instar stage. At that time we still had 2 crysalis in the aquarium to be hatched or whatever you call it you can till I am a newbie. Having to have to clean out the aquarium after only 3 caterpillars I told her I wasn't bringing in any more cats. The next morning I looked at the fennel that the 5 cats were on and only saw 2 after feeling a little better and one of the butterflys flew away I decided to clean the aquarium and bring in the lonely 2. Now I am sorry I didn't save all 5 of them. I can't image bringing in hundreds. I can't believe my daughter saw the 5 little itty bitty swallowtails; it was such a pleasure. I don't think I will ever see those tiny eggs. I think you have to have xray vision to spot them! You people are amazing and it has been a great time watching the few that we have had this year. Your all great at what you do! Just a reminder ......keep up the great work .......but yes give yourself a break and don't feel bad at all! GREAT JOB!

Bluebell - here ya go! BANANA BREAD BLONDIES Ingredients For Blondies: ½ cup unsalted butter-melted 1 cup light brown sugar ¼ teaspoon salt 1 large egg 2 teaspoon vanilla 1 ½ -2 teaspoon cinnamon (to taste) 1 cup flour ½ cup mashed banana (one medium-large banana) For Frosting: ¼ cup butter 6 Tablespoons light brown sugar 2 Tablespoons milk Dash of salt 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup powdered sugar Instructions Preheat oven to 350 F and line 8 x 8 inch baking pan with aluminum foil (leaving an overhang on the sides to lift the finished blondies out) and spray with cooking spray , set aside. To make the blondie batter, in a medium bowl mix together melted butter, sugar and salt. Add egg vanilla and cinnamon and mix until well combined. Add mashed banana and mix to combine. Add flour and mix until combined and smooth. Pour the batter into prepared pan, smooth the top and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until center has set. Remove from the oven and allow to cool to room temperature. To make the frosting in a medium sauce pan melt the butter and continue cooking over medium heat until reach nice amber color, stirring constantly (be careful not to burn it). Add brown sugar, milk and a dash of salt, stir and bring to boil. Remove from heat and cool for 10-15 minutes. Whisk in vanilla and powdered sugar. Spread over the blondies. Allow frosting to set before slicing and serving. Here's the batch I made. The next time I make them, I'll add chopped nuts to the blondies. I thought they were even yummier after having been refrigerated for a few hours too. Enjoy!

Yes, there are more good days than bad. Some days are both. Once in awhile a day comes along that is a doozy. Last week was such, but this week is better - mostly because the new antibiotic is finally working and I'm getting more cooperation from the nurses.
