sunflower seeds

I grew huge SF this yr. and laid the seeds in the sun to dry for a few days them put in metal container.
I've tried feeding them to the birds but the won't eat them.
Why? I didn't roast them or put any chemicals on them.
I thought I was being so smart to have seeds all winter for them. Bummer!

If they are the very large seeds (gray-striped or black-white striped variety), very few birds will eat them because they are too hard to open. The exception would be cardinals, grosbeaks and jays. Most of the smaller feeder birds, finches, chickadees, nuthatches, sparrows, etc, can only successfully open the smaller all black, black-oil sunflower seeds. That may be the problem.

Ok thanks I never knew that. Guess I will have to shell them for them!!

Which mammoth variety are you looking for? I don't have that large of quantities (I wasn't able to harvest the seed crop on my mammoth varieties this year so what I have are '07 harvested). I have a small amount of the 'Russian Mammoth', a bit larger amount of the 'Mammoth Grey Stripe' and a fairly decent amount of the classic 'Mammoth'. cindjo2~ When you say "plant an inch or so deep" ... do you mean I cover the seed shell that's still encasing the cortyledons an inch or so deep?(in other words I would plant it and not see anything above ground) At that depth will the cortyledons be able to pop up through the surface? Or do you mean plant the roots down into the soil and leave the seed cased cortyledons at ground level or above? I'm so inexperienced I apologize for my dumb questions but I really want these to have a chance to survive. I wish I would have direct sown them as you say but I what started out as an experiment to see how the baggy germination method worked has left me in this situation ... well...um... because it worked! LOL caroline~Wow. Have you got a green thumb to spare?!!!! I could use one right about now. Post us some pictures when you get your sunflower heads!! I hope I can get mine to do what yours are doing.

That's about what mine look like, a shriveled nothing basically! But normal looking shell. In fact more robust to the parent seeds(which I still have some of). I was worried maybe something had some how gone into the shell and caused it to not form.Like maybe aphids or something. I have found at least one seed, that looks to be a full fertile seed. But, maybe that's the case.
