Gilbertson PVC Bluebird Nest Box

Have any of you used a Gilbertson PVC Bluebird Nest Box? From what I can find on the internet they are supposed to be about the best you can get, I have never seen any of them for sale except on the internet and the are kind of high priced. I know I can build them for less and I'm thinking about building some to use and also some to sell on ebay.

Mimi, the snake trap is fine as long as you monitor it. If a snake becomes trapped, you must be nearby to release it or it can become entangled and die. Instead, I recommend that you baffle your nestboxes--I use the stovepipe baffle on all 35+ nestboxes that I monitor and I have never lost an egg, nestling or adult bird to a climbing predator. The stovepipe I use is 6" in diameter and 24" long . . . others use 8" diameter stovepipe. It is important to install the baffles so that they wobble as this keeps climbing predators such as raccoons from being able to shimmy up to the nestbox. I also recommend using the hardware cloth (as shown on the link below) as this entices snakes to climb inside the baffle towards daylight. Since they cannot get through the hardware cloth, they become frustrated and leave. I know for certain that there are snakes at all my nestbox locations, including the ones here at the house, and I also know that these baffles work and are doing their job! According to my own personal research, the Gilbertson PVC would be the least appealing nestbox to House Sparrows (HOSP) I would call a wildlife number for TN to find any regulations on trapping. Most areas allow it, euthanasia is the bigger issue. Also, check out sialis.org for more on that. Yes, it is very much possible that a Rehab center would take the HOSP. I emailed my local Raptor Rehab Center, who are under 10 miles away, and they said they would love to take them, and that they infact trap for the bluebirds too! ~Tim! I would not put a suet block on top of a birdhouse, just draws in other birds which is one thing you do not want to do. If you know they will eat suet you could put it near where you see them perching alot but not on the nestbox. Not all blues will eat suet though especially if there are plenty of live bugs. Swaying in the wind won't keep them away from a nestbox, most nestboxes do sway some in the wind. Will be interesting to see which box they choose. Good luck! Donna

We have one Audubon, and two of the Jack/Dan Finch boxes out of Bailey, NC. They're all poled & baffled. As we were unpacking last year, the new Audubon box was the first one we found, so it went up first. While it is a tad smaller than the Bailey boxes (to me it's less confusing than calling a BBird box a Finch box), we had two successful clutches last year. The Bailey box we put up last year ended up hosting Chickadees, but is in a less desirable location for Blues evidently. That's why this year we put up a third box, and it's a Bailey box - we'll see Who ends up Where, and in What box. I posted last year asking "is it the Box, or the Location they like?" and we're all not sure.... Good luck!!

My bluebirds love these pvc nestboxes. Every time I put up a new one they might be already nesting but they check out the new pvc. They do nest most of the time in a new box if they find one like the one they left. I have 4 of these pvc and have had a lot of bluebirds pairs checking it out. I just don’t know what it is about these boxes but I will tell you they love them.

Be careful. The ones on Cardinal Corner and over places are made by someone or people and the one I got from Cardinal corner the person didn’t make the roof overhang as long as it was supposed to be. They cut off of the roof to save on money. I know I have 3 more I got when Gilbertson was still selling them. I will use the short roof one as a spare but won’t order anymore. It’s all about making money not the bluebirds.

I make my own using 8 inch plastic pipe about 12 inches long. I cut out a bottom from 1 inch thick pine, drill holes in the wood as a drain, then staple a wire basket to the wood bottom out of 1/4 inch hardware cloth. The top can be tricky to attach, and I am still experimenting with different ways of doing this. Sometimes I use roofing shingles and sometimes I cut up soft drink cans to make my own shingles. I make the opening oval shaped (seems to be most effective) I have been using these boxes for almost 20 years and have had great success with them.
