What kind of nest boxes do you use?

Hello everyone,

What type of nest boxes is everyone using? What have been your experiences? As for myself, I have 5 gilbertson boxes that I manage and so far this year I made 3 boxes from 4" PVC pipe that I will be testing. I am planning on making more and testing 5" and 6" too. The gilbertson boxes seem to be less appealing to HOSP so that is why I bought 5 over the years. Personally I have had many successful nesting attempts with both TRES, EABL, and a few house wrens over the last 13 years. These were the only birds that came to boxes out in the country when I lived with my parents. This year I am living on my own in the city with a semi wooded lot, so I may not get TRES and EABL, but hoping to and also hoping to get tufted titmice and chickadees.

I use a standard bluebird box that I buy. I have them all on poles and baffled. I have 2 vanert in box traps for the sparrows. I have had blues and tres every year. I even train the blues to come to the deck for mealworms and wax worms (they like the wax worms best) I have known people to get blues in the city but not tres. Wishing you the best of luck and I too would be happy to have chickadees and tufted titmice. Good luck!! (I live in the country)

We have one Audubon, and two of the Jack/Dan Finch boxes out of Bailey, NC. They're all poled & baffled.

As we were unpacking last year, the new Audubon box was the first one we found, so it went up first. While it is a tad smaller than the Bailey boxes (to me it's less confusing than calling a BBird box a Finch box), we had two successful clutches last year. The Bailey box we put up last year ended up hosting Chickadees, but is in a less desirable location for Blues evidently. That's why this year we put up a third box, and it's a Bailey box - we'll see Who ends up Where, and in What box.

I posted last year asking "is it the Box, or the Location they like?" and we're all not sure....

PrairieMoon2, I have a seed starting mix from Gardens Alive! (I got it free) that is very nice. The fluffy stuff in it is coir based, I don't recall what else is in it, but Gardens Alive! is online and easy to find. I just use that for starting seeds, though. For regular plants in pots I mix ordinary soil and compost, or ordinary soil and aged horse manure. I grew a few tomatoes and peppers in containers last year (just to avoid having to weed part of the garden to plant them.) They were in a soil/manure mix. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to do that, so they grew really well! :-) I have always used some real soil in my pots, I have a few houseplants that are almost 30 years old, so I would have to say it does work. For my rosemary plant I mixed soil with sand about 50/50, as rosemary has specific drainage and growth requirements. But normally I just use what I have, which is soil, compost, and horse manure. I age/compost horse manure in large containers so that I usually have some old stuff that is safe to work with. Marcia

when do birds take over a nesting box?

Hi: I'm in zone 5 on the east coast. I have bluebirds and tree swallows using boxes now. The bluebirds have 5 eggs in one box and the tree swallows have claimed the other box, but that is as far as they have gotten. They have been here for 3 seasons now. I believe they feel more comfortable and territorial here now. The bluebirds winter over here. This is the earliest they have nested. The first year I think they finally had a nest attempt in May (house sparrows kept taking over) and were finally successful in July. You may only have house sparrows if you have them in your area. They will out compete (and kill) every other species that makes an attempt to nest unless you help them.

Not all that new. If only it were that easy! NABS (North American Bluebird Society) does not recommend that type of nestbox. Honestly, it is doubtful that anything discourages HOSP if they are really interested. HOSP will nest anywhere they can if you let them. See examples here . You could still use it, with the plug closing the top, but don't depend on it discouraging HOSP. BlueBars

What kind of cookie sheets/pans do you use?

I have two plain, uncoated/unanodized aluminum half-sheet size jellyroll pans (with the 1" lip). I'm on my second set in 40 years. Both were purchased from restaurant supply stores; we live in the SF Bay Area so there are half a dozen to chose from. I hardly ever bake cookies, LOL, but I use these all the time - at least twice a week, sometimes both at once. Everything from roasting 3 lb. of asparagus to oven-baked breaded chicken thighs, or roasting raw pine nuts to store in the freezer for salad topping. I have one "open" smaller cookie sheet (the kind with sides that slant upwards, but open corners) in a lighter weight that is easy to grab and works well for 'holding', such as draining bacon on paper towels and keeping the strips warm in the oven. I also have a new Circulon non-stick 10x15 pan, very heavy weight, that is perfect when I am sear-roasting steaks. I heat the sheet pan up in the oven until it's sizzling, then sear the steaks on the stovetop. Finish them off in the oven, and they're perfect. I have carpal tunnel, so I use the above technique in lieu of a cast iron pan, which is too hard on my wrists to lift easily.
