Do I clean out the nest box?

I had 2 successful broods this year and the whole family visits every day. I guess I assumed that they leave for the winter, but I looked it up and apparently they stay year round :). I planned on cleaning it out when they left, but since they aren't should I leave it alone? They go in and out of it every day. I've checked it for eggs and there are none. Thanks! Christy

You're way down in zone 8, so I'm not even sure they really need any winter insulation. But what I do is to clean it out, and put dried grass in it for the winter in case they need a roosting spot. It gets rid of any parasites that may be in the old nest, and gives them a warm place to stay for the winter.

No Tim. That has not been my experience. If a completed nest with eggs is predated, my experience has been that the Mamas will build another nest to start over. They don't reuse the old one. If there is an old nest inside the box, they may build a new one on top of the old one. It's best to clean out all used nests once they are done with them. Tim (#2) was recommending that you keep the nest if it is still intact in case you may have a need for it in the future.~~Angie

I was taking a little break, meanly too busy with too many things. >>I have tree swallows that like my purple martin house that fell down to about 6' above groundOh dear...everything still OK? >>How far away from the birds were you when you took the pic? About 2 feet, this picture was done with a cheap, second hand point and shoot camera Sony P43, about 4 megapixel, ....and was shot by itself by means of motion sensor/controlboard, camera needed to be hacked, 3 wires soldered inside and hocked up to motion board, this can be programed on how often pictures are taken. Camera and board is put inside a Pelican case/ sealed. 3 holes are drilled, one for flash, one for lens and one for sensor, glass is glued over for the lens and flash hole. Then all you need to do is put it up, in this case there was another tree beside the box, strapped on. Here another one, this one with a Sony P32...3 mega pix. Konrad

Fran, I clean out my box the day or day after they fledge. Soon as I can get it done and back up for the next nesting. I would think you'll have another one this season so the sooner the better. It's likely the same couple will return to that box in the next week (or sooner) since second and third nestings move along faster than the first. They'll teach the fledglings how to hunt and survive for the first few weeks and you might even see some of them show up in the area where the box is. I always see my fledgling because I feed meal worms (year round) and the adults bring them to the feeder about a week or two after fledging. Good luck on another successful nesting!
