A permaculture design course (PDC) is an internationally recognized curriculum, teaching people around the world methods of environmental stewardship and community-based self-reliance. The permaculture philosophy teaches a system of co-habitation between people and the earth, advocating a healthy future for both. The course teaches people to employ the earth�s regenerative ecosystems services without exploiting and depleting its finite natural resources.

Meet the Instructors

Eric Phillips is a permaculture instructor and previous renewable energy professional for 12 years. After his initial PDC and water harvesting education in Arizona he traveled to Austrailia to study under world renowned permaculture instructor Geoff Lawton. There he spent over 2 months at Zaytuna Farm where he took a second full PDC, a course in Urban Permaculture and went on to earn his Teacher Training Certificate. For the past two years, Eric has enjoyed teaching and working with Sustainable Kashi year round. His passions are food forests, tropical fruit trees and sustainable communities.

Soo Se Cho is a certified permaculturalist that grew up on Kashi. He has a deep connection to the land and community. He is a year round educator, farmer, and co-founder of Sustainable Kashi. He is passionate about finding local resources to build systems that will feed the generations to come.

Peter Turner is a Florida native who grew up in Indian River County. He holds a bachelors degree from the University of North Florida in history and he obtained his PDC from Koreen Brennan. . Before co-founding Sustainable Kashi, Peter worked as a chef and a high school teacher. Growing up in the Boy Scouts, Peter spent every weekend outside. He considers himself an avid outdoorsman and enjoys doing everything from fishing hiking kayaking and scuba diving.Whether giving a lecture or a form to work his enthusiasm pervades all he does!

What are WOOFers? Dogs? The bass speaker for a stereo? Either way, thanks, but I don't need any. (I've got six dogs.) Anyway,the work continues. Poured the concrete slabs for the windmill (requires a 5' deep, 18" diameter piling at each corner), chicken breeder pens, and two sheds. The used windmill arrived in dismantled condition two days ago. Will be trying to assemble it this week. It has plenty of character...if you like bullet holes in the sheet metal. I also installed a two-line watering system for the garden: one for well water and another for water from my tilapia tanks. These will be used to irrigate the garden. I've made a bit of a design breakthrough on growing tilapia in a more sustainable way. One of the high-energy aspects of intensive tilapia culture is running pumps for filter system. And, lots of fish require lots of filtering. Anyway, I've come up with a way of eliminating any filters for the tilapia tanks. Basically, the tanks are elevated a couple of feet off the ground. Every few hours, a timer activates a solenoid that opens a purge valve for a couple of minutes. The tilapia tanks dump about 25% of their water which is then routed to the garden to water the plants with the nutrient-laden waste water. There's an automatic refiller valve that then allows fresh water gravity fed from an elevated water tank (that is filled with the windmill) to refill the tilapia tank with clean water. This would happen four times a day, thus completely emptying and refilling the tank once a day. This will keep the water clear and clean and provide all the irrigation water (and much of the fertilizer) to the garden. I'll be building this system over the next couple of months. The comfrey and figs are growing as is the livestock. One of my red wattle sows is pregnant and should be having a litter any day. The chicks I hatched this spring are starting to get big. The pens for the sheep and cattle have watering tanks with automatic refillers (I can highly recommend the Rubbermaid brand) and my days of carrying water are over. (Whew!) In North Florida, spring gives way to summer and the permaculture garden continues to take shape.

"It's my understanding that most winners stay in the house as a vacation, pick a few of the nicest decor pieces -- and the vehicle-- then sell it. Otherwise most won't be able to pay the taxes." then they pay a ton in taxes... back a time I worked with a number of auditors. They said never spend even a night there - it'll cost ya big money. and yes, taxes, heating, cooling would be way up there! This home doesn't hold much interest to me. I saw it coming on and changed the channel. Just for fun if I see it on again, I'll watch it. I usually don't like any of the dÃÂ©cor in those homes. Most homes those designer/teams people do on the shows would make me scream "noooooooooooooooooo!".

I learned having a vegetable garden is great! No kidding, it's my first year having my own. Pretty modest start, with a single 4'x8' raised bed, then again, I don't have a ton of estate on my small suburban lot. What I grew in there: two red tomato plants, three cherry tomato plants, one Italian, three cucumber plants, a few green beans, some shallots. Got a nice steady harvest of cucumber starting in mid-summer. Got plenty of tomatoes from all plants, but season was late for everything and still have lots of green ones on there, but they are plump and large. Have started to eat some a few weeks ago. Had our first frost a couple of days ago, but I cover with a tarp whenever there is a nightly threat. September weather has been really nice so far though, maybe not ideal for kick-starting the ripening process, but it's starting to get a bit crappier now, maybe things will progress a bit faster. I may have 50-60% of my crop still on the plants. I was lucky and did not get any significant pest or disease and I did nothing to prevent it really. For next season, I plan on having two more raised beds of same dimension as well as growing a few plants in large containers/buckets. I learned I should space tomato plants more than 12" apart, as I was told by someone who gave me seedlings. I should also figure out the support scheme before I need it. Same for cucumbers.

New things we're all growing (or attempting to) winter '15/spring '16

A few more updates.. Within the last couple of days, two sapodilla seeds have sprouted, and just today, I saw that two of the Peruvian apple cacti had sprouted, but they were right behind the plant tag, and I didn't see them until moving the tag. I've also got some white pitaya (dragon fruit) seedlings that have been sprouting over the last week or so. I'd all but gave up on many of these things, but I guess there is some hope for things that haven't sprouted so far. Still hoping for some A. Reticulata, A. Squamosa, Mexican cream guavas, purple star apple, blackberry jam fruit, phalsa berries, and jujubes that I'd recently planted (after cracking the shell and soaking in hot water for several days, with several water changes) from a seedling tree I had. So far, I've also had 4 out of the 7 chestnut seeds sprout. So, the final number that will have sprouted will be between 4 and 7. I'll probably propagate them in larger numbers next season, as long as I can verify the type and where they were grown. If nothing else, I could use them as rootstock for grafting. Lastly, I planted out the new unframed no-till (back to Eden) raised bed with two cassava plants and five sweet potato plants. I'll probably go back in after all of this rain and flooding and fill in the area with peanuts as well. It has a higher sand content than any of my other beds.
