The Gardner's Journal
Comments (28)It appears that the gardeners who don't like the current and past garden shows are all here in one place. I'm happy to join the crowd! kgallagher, I especially agree with what you say about the gardening programs that are not about real gardening. They're also moderated by amateurs. I want to see real gardens, not instant outdoor entertainment centers with plants playing a minor role in the design as if they were an afterthought. Greenthumb, yeah, the Shovel Guy was a complete waste of time for any place but Florida. Even then he never varied his swirly style with no rhyme or reason why the lawn lines were where they were, and like Rebecca's garden, he relied on perennials too much. When you start your design with perennials you're on the wrong path. The Shovel Guy never had to worry about drainage in the Florida sand which is an integral part of gardening. He didn't design rocks in his gardens either. That program should have stayed in Florida where it may have had relevance. All that said, I would appreciate you to take a look at my garden in the Seattle area. It covers about 6 acres on 10 and I started it in 1978. I'm a retired garden designer and landscape contractor for non gardeners that has grown plants since childhood. Low maintenance is a high priority. It's a different garden with plenty of pictures, some with flowers. ;-) Enjoy. Mike photobucket.com/user/Botann/library/?sort=3&page=1...See More2015: The Year of The ____________
Comments (86)I'm so sorry, I somehow missed getting back to this thread after I checked it one time and there were no comments. Thank you kindly for all the lovely remarks. I'm glad that others appreciate the kind of atmosphere I was trying to create. I haven't been on this forum for some years and thought I would be fun to come back and see what's going on....See MoreIdentifying these patio stones please....
Comments (10)Theclose, funny you mention that stone called Provence levanna blue because I liked it in the catalog also so went to see it and hated it. It has a shiny look to the top plus it scratched very easy. Did not look good at all. My budget will not be able to handle the bluestone so I have to find something else that is more affordable. i cannot decide if I want a smooth finish stone or textured. Any ideas on this....See MoreDo you ever miss your previous home?
Comments (46)I hear you DYH. I so much miss my old garden, an eight year labor of love. And I miss my finished basement with my office and all that storage! I cried and cried the day I closed on that house and left. I miss the big old house I grew up in. SO and I were just talking about this today. I think it depends on how happy you were in the house and how it compares to your present home. I am now living in my parents former home, which I inherited from my mother. I'm here going through her stuff, my stuff and SO's stuff. Dad moved to a condo. While I like the house, (it's lovely and the lot is beautiful) it lacks storage and is on a busy street. I could probably manage those two issues, since the house cost me nothing. But I can't manage the overwhelming sense of sadness I get from living in my mom's house with her things and constantly going through the same motions as she did. SO said that I have to not let it bother me. Not sure how that is going to happen. I do busy myself but when the process of busying myself includes doing the exact things that my late mother did in her exact spot with her implements . . . for some that might be comforting, but for me not so much. I have no desire to get rid of the family heirlooms, but I need a new space. We hope to move someday . . . Only time will tell if we manage to swing it....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
