The Gardner's Journal
Comments (28)It appears that the gardeners who don't like the current and past garden shows are all here in one place. I'm happy to join the crowd! kgallagher, I especially agree with what you say about the gardening programs that are not about real gardening. They're also moderated by amateurs. I want to see real gardens, not instant outdoor entertainment centers with plants playing a minor role in the design as if they were an afterthought. Greenthumb, yeah, the Shovel Guy was a complete waste of time for any place but Florida. Even then he never varied his swirly style with no rhyme or reason why the lawn lines were where they were, and like Rebecca's garden, he relied on perennials too much. When you start your design with perennials you're on the wrong path. The Shovel Guy never had to worry about drainage in the Florida sand which is an integral part of gardening. He didn't design rocks in his gardens either. That program should have stayed in Florida where it may have had relevance. All that said, I would appreciate you to take a look at my garden in the Seattle area. It covers about 6 acres on 10 and I started it in 1978. I'm a retired garden designer and landscape contractor for non gardeners that has grown plants since childhood. Low maintenance is a high priority. It's a different garden with plenty of pictures, some with flowers. ;-) Enjoy. Mike photobucket.com/user/Botann/library/?sort=3&page=1...See MoreWho won the HGTV Dream Home?
Comments (7)Fun! I think last time we posted about this we said the cash wouldn't make that big of a dent in the taxes. HGTV says the total value of the prize is $2,000,000. If you subtract 250k cash and 50k for the car, the value of the house and furnishings are around 1.7 million. Sell the house for 1.5 million, pay the realtor 90k, pay 750k taxes and you end up with 660k cash plus a 50k car. I'd be thrilled with 660k and a brand new car but the financial reality of the prize is sobering....See MoreWill white cabinets look dated?
Comments (63)I've been lurking here for a while now and having a great time hearing about everyone's thoughts and seeing what products are available, trends, etc. I'm hoping to make some changes to my 16 yr old kitchen soon, so this site has been invaluable. I thought I would weigh in on white cabinets. My first thought was to change my white cabinets. I am a complete lover of all fine wood. When we built this house I was sure I was heading for the shaker cherry or maple kitchen of my dreams. Before moving I went through all my old magazines and ripped out any picture that caught my fancy. When I sorted them all out, every single kitchen picture I ripped out was white! I was shocked. It had never in a million years occurred to me to install a white kitchen, but I went with what I obviously must have subconsciously liked most! However, we knew we would be having kids, dog, etc.....so when it came to the kitchen we went with non-wood, but very sturdy white cabinets that I can scrub all I want. They are not cheesy, apartment-like cabinets. We also went with a medium wood tone laminate flooring. I'm not a huge fan of anything non-wood. Folks think we're crazy with our cedar siding, huge cedar picket fence, wood decks, etc....because of the upkeep. It was a bit painful to not install wood cabinets and floor but overall they have worked out great for the reasons above. Scrub them clean and they look "real enough". I've changed cabinet hardware twice since then and it's amazing how much just a hardware change can actually change the look of a kitchen to keep it more up to date. I can't even begin to talk about my laminate counters which I thought were a good idea at the time, but oh, what a mistake! We did a solid color......and I mean....color! Ultimately, I decided to keep my non-wood, white cabinets because I think I can live with them for another 15 years. We'll change counters, backsplash, sink, wall color, and finally install a wood floor. During the next 15 years I'll probably go through another couple changes of hardware, or maybe even backsplash which will help keep it all up to date. And who knows.....maybe years from now if there's ever another kitchen remodel in my future I'll go for the wood. For now I have the shaker cherry bedroom of my dreams. Must have beautiful wood!...See MoreWhy buy it?
Comments (45)Almost 20 years ago we bought a house that wasn't really what we wanted -- we're still in it. It does contain a number of things I "hate" (thought that's a strong word for it). So why'd we buy it? - It is a large, solidly built, all-brick house with a fenced in back yard. - It is in exactly the right spot for the schools we wanted our kids to attend -- and our jobs. - It is conveniently located to the shopping, restaurants, entertainment, our doctor, and our church. All the things we really wanted to be near. - We found an excellent deal -- literally the cheapest place we could've chosen, which allowed us to sock away college money for the kids and retirement money for ourselves. For those positives, we have put up with an inconveniently placed laundry, too-small closets, lackluster natural light, and a corner lot. Other things too, but those're the things I thought of right away....See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh
