Crinkled new leaves on hot peppers. Please help !

Dear friends,

I've been growing hot peppers for 2 years now. Some of my plants have very crinkled new leaves. I have fertilized them with cow manure

Does anyone know whats wrong with them or suggestions on how to save them ?

For starters, never fertilize with straight manure, its terrible for plants.

Well composted manure is great, but don't just dump it on there straight out of the cow.

Wonder if it's herbicide damage.

If so, could be from material sprayed nearby a week or more ago. Or it could be from the residual of herbicides used on the pasture, etc, against broadleaf weeds.

Contaminated organic matter from residual herbicides has been a serious problem in the US & Europe for a number of years from active ingredient clopyralid, aminopyralid and more.

Review the info at the link, then do the suggested bioassay to determine if the manure is the source of the problem.

Could also do your own search with the phrase "contaminated organic matter wsu" -- but without the quote marks.

OK, now I am reconsidering environmental stress. Since I can't find anything disease related. I'm going with jean001a conclusion. My plants both indoors and out have been subjected to colder root temps with higher leaf temps. I start the plants out in a closet where prior years I would have the lights on 24-7 and there would be no fluctuations in temp. This year however I took someone's advice and decided that they do need night time rest. When the lights go off the closet is not heated and the temp will go from (just a guess) 100ÃÂ°f to 65ÃÂ°f the Same thing goes for my small greenhouse, prior years we have had very warm end of winter temps so this year they have been subjected to warmer days and colder nights that my small heater can't compensate for. The best I can do at least for the indoor plants is put them back on the 24-7 light time to keep the closet at a steady temp. As far as the greenhouse I just need a bigger space heater but its not in the budget for this year. I checked on craigslist for a used one with no luck. So I guess it will have to wait. Unfortunately, I don't have a way to take pictures (ancient cell phone, no camera). BUT I have noticed today that the plants that were darker in leaf colour have got a stiff spike of what I think must pass for its flowers growing up out of the very top of several of the plants -- I don't remember peppers ever doing that. I'm thinking they might not be peppers at all but weeds? I planted another set of 6 just hot peppers in a container and they have started sprouting (only 6 and only where I put the seeds :). Is it safe to say I can pull out those plants with the funky flower shoot and try again in their place some bells?

FlFerrari, I love ur garden! Unfortunetly for me, I live in a row home in Philadelphia. Property in our city is sky high for almost no square footage. I have a 25' X 16' (concrete) yard, and a balcony on my second floor which is about the size of the yard. I have the containers on the balcony. It is basically the roof of my kitchen. I figured it was better to keep them out there and safe from squirrels or racoons. Luckily I have access to all the 55gallon drums I want from work. I cut them down to less than half and used those as pots. I thought it would be more than enough space for them to grow and I drilled about 25, 3/8" holes in the bottoms and lower sides for drainage and ventilation. I have been considering building a raised bed garden for next season. I could use the entire middle of the yard and just have walkways on either side. Just some thoughts I had. Of course I have to clear it all with the boss (wife). Lol. She thinks I'm crazy. Went from 5hrs a night boxing to gardening. Anyway, I've babbled on enough. I'll definetly check out your book when it's available. Thanx for the tips.

isgen: Yes, that nick is a reference to Pike Fishing. I use a close version of the 5-1-1 mix that has been discussed many time on this forum. It sounds like what you are using is close to that as well. But the mix should be heavy on the bark part. I made up a bunch of the 5-1-1 mix a few years ago and am running out of it now. I don't know what I will do in the coming years. The only source I can find for bark is a very mixed size so I have to put it through two different sized sieves to sort out the pieces that are too big and too small. My back just can't handle that any more. But it is good stuff for growing peppers. I see you in the same growing season as me. I think your problem with getting pods was a result of our short growing season and you should probably be starting seeds indoors prior to March first in order to have plants that are mature enough to put out in late may so that you time to get them to production by the end of the growing season up north. I start mine in mid February.

It looks like herbicide damage. It can come from Cow manure, if the cattle ate some treated vegetation.

Have you had some really cold temperatures lately? That can also make new growth look horrible, wrinkled, small leaves with squigly veins.

Take a look at what near freezing/freezing temps did to make the new growth look like on my plants last season. Several people thought it was herbicide damage as well. But they came out of it a few weeks later and flourished with normal growth.

It does not look like anything I would worry too much over. I would use some MG all purpose fertilizer at directed strength, and leave them alone.

I had 2 plants that looked like last season. One had crinkled leaves for the whole season. Both put out tons of pods each. In fact they were the two most productive peppers I grew last season.
