Growing jade plants outside????????
Comments (4)In your zone heat will be the least of worries jades can handle temps in the100's. Transitioning from inside to outside a shade cloth covering 50 % for a week 25 % for a second week and none for the remainder of season Also relative is extended time of shade cloth use may be extended by actual date that you move it out and location. Wind protection and rain Wind speed knocking any pot over depends on pot size it's shape, weight adding height of jade all have bearing as to how much or how little wind is needed to knock it over and roll it around when or if knocked over. Smaller pot into a bigger pot not my preference but would help Surrounding the pot with reasonable size and weight stones ,you can also wire the pot to a rack or let it sink into an open rail holding device that allows air to move as well. A couple ideas that would greatly help prevent any sudden wind gust of good speed pot knock overs to a very high degree.. Rain::: fast and very sharp draining soil of porous substrates would allow you some time for you to get it undercover but would be more realistic if you already had it under cover before it rains. A hard grown Jade can handle some sudden unexpected rain falls even if it didn't need water. As I don't think you are hard growing your Jade I'd rather suggest you keep it in a bright sunny some mid day shade undercover location than to offer this type of risk...See MoreAcclimating Jade Plants for Summer Outdoors
Comments (1)Just tuck them in some bright shade (under a chair, bench, deck rail, et cetera) for a few days, then move them into partial sun for a few more days. For best results, make it a two week transition. Josh...See MoreJades outside in summer
Comments (8)I think moving any plant around to much is stressful on us and the plants.. but i understand about the weather issue (i live in MA for Christ sakes!) The only thing i can tell you is that I've done a lot of moving back and forth exspecially at night when the temp really drops!. I actually modified a old Jewelry display case into a sort of greenhouse kinda thing to keep my plants warm or atleast warmer then it is on my Sun porch, that is. Sooo i can have my plants outside to get the sun they need but also have the option of putting the less cold hardy ones inside the displayed case thru the colder nights with a fan on inside so the humidity doesn't get to too high for them. Then i take them out in the morning when its warmer out. This way I'm not changing there environment to too drastically. I've gotten a lot of bad reviews on having the display case as a greenhouse people didn't think it would work the way i wanted it to, but in fact it works quite well for me...so don't think you have to ruin your plans or what you believe it's worki ng or will work foryour because of what some people ssay. On here, if you think its better to shuffle your plants back and forth and its been working out fine for you...then keep it up. Or if you'd like to try something else that someone suggests then go for it hun. If you'd like to keep then outside but Protect them from cold, bugs and blowing over I'd suggest making a small greenhouse kinda shelter or buy one online to put your plants in when it gets cold or windy. I'm sure you can find some things online to show you how to make one yourself, or find sites to buy one of you'd like. I'm here for help if you'd like to know how i repurposed mine into a greenhouse type thing or for any suggestions on how to go about putting it together and what you'll need in it. Good luck!...See MorePlants outside for the summer?
Comments (8)Now that's out of my system... the spring has been long in coming. I finally have flowers on the weeping cherry. All around me, at lower elevations, they've been in bloom for nearly two weeks. I've just begun to water the Sans a bit more. Once it gets warm enough to put them out, the roots should actively growing again, or at least that's what I hope for. The vegetable garden has been turned and weeded for over a month... waiting... for... spring... Michael Interlaken NY Z6...See Morejean001a
