Manchurian walnut

I am looking for any and all info on this tree. There is practically no info online about general cultivation. What little I find says, little if any problems with jugalone, about 60 feet high, and nuts that taste better than english walnuts and black walnuts . Apparently some live in edmonton, and is hardy to about -35C. I cant find any first hand info on any of the above information.

Asian walnuts like this are related to butternut and resemble it.

The Manchurian walnut (Juglans mandshurica) grows in the Mustila Arboretum in Finland since the 1930s. I think it will have experienced temperatures below -30C.

The manchurian walnut is edible but difficult to crack open.

John H. Gordon grew - and offered seedlings - of the 'Covel' manchurian walnut - or a hybrid of it - from his nursery in Amherst NY, where he specialized in nut trees for northern growers. (JHG passed away several years ago...don't think the nursery is still in operation, but parts of his website are still up - linked below) 2007 was a disaster - and a good illustration of how important it is WHEN it gets cold, as compared to HOW cold it gets. Butternut is noted for its cold-hardiness...but we'd had an exceptionally warm Feb/March - with several days in March with temps into the mid-80s. Things had broken dormancy far too early - I had pecans/walnuts/persimmons with 8-10 inches of tender new growth...then, 4 consecutive nights of temps into the teens, at Easter. Killed a lot of things outright, some just back to the root collar. Big mature oaks/hickories in the forest here were killed back to their main trunks - branches larger around than my thigh...dead. Adam, check out Northern Nut Growers. http://www.nutgrowing.org/ The hybrid Juglans Hindsi X Juglans Nigra aka the Royal hybrid would be worth looking into. There are some walnut diseases that have to be considered. Walnut die back is one that is hitting several areas hard. My advice is to consider carefully whether you want to go through with this, then decide how much acreage to plant. I have 50+ acres of walnut trees planted and have a LOT more work to do on them than I care to think about. Land that grows good walnut tends to be rich fertile bottom land near streams but outside the flood zone. Hmmm. Interesting! I hope it isn't suffering (due to the suckering). You don't think its that nasty canker do you? PS: we don't have too many of those trees there so I'm not sure what all the butternut canker would entail. I did read this on the slivics website though Butternut hybridizes with English walnut (Juglans regia L.) to produce J. x quadrangulata (Carr.) Rehd. It also crosses with Japanese walnut J. ailantifolia Carr. to produce J. x bixbyi Rehd. Butternut is also reported to successfully hybridize with little walnut (J. microcarpa Berland.) and Manchurian walnut (J. mandshurica Maxim.) (6,14). Reports of crosses between butternut and black walnut have not been substantiated. Butternut is thought to have a haploid chromosome number of 16. You don't think it hybridized with something else at the farm/source you got the nuts from?

Black walnuts are not at all rare here in E. Wisconsin. Nor are they often planted-the squirrels handling most of that duty. I think they are handsome, long-lived trees, yet I don't especially like them! I guess when you've been surrounded by them, had squirrels endlessly plant them in beds you must maintain, seen the poor growth of numerous garden plants under them....the lack of absence makes the heart grow less fond. +om

I have got one of these and it is one of my absolute favorits. It is extremely cold hardy and has got quite a short vegetation period. The leaves are over 2' long and gives a tropical feeling like no other that hardy tree. The leaves might blow apart in strong winds though, so this tree grows best in a somewhat sheltered spot. They do have juglone, but not as strongly as some other walnut species.

I was wondering how much shade they can take when young? IF Im not mistaken, most walnuts can take some shade when young?

The late(d.2012) John H. Gordon offered 'Covel' Manchurian - probably as grafted specimens and also as seedlings; don't think that the family carried on his business after his death; see link below.

Ernie Grimo(Grimo Nut Nursery in Ontario) doesn't specifically list a Manchurian walnut - but may have 'Covel' or other selections.
If you're wanting to try it, I'd contact Ernie; if he doesn't have it, he may know where to get it.

I'm thinking that I'd seen something in print about the Morden Agricultural Research Center, in Manitoba, doing some work with Manchurian walnut - might be worth contacting some of the folks there for more info.

I think they can take some shade when they are young, it might actually benefit them. They get extremely wide when grown in full sun and some shade might force them to grow more upwards to reach for light and form them into better trees

Ive read quite a few trees can take shade from the sides and not from above, which helps the grow tall and straight. It would just give me more options for placement
