New to winter sowing - container questions

Hi, I want to try winter sowing and have questions about containers and lids:

1) I keep seeing examples of milk jugs and takeout containers, but what about those seed-starter trays with separate wells? Could I use those (or Jiffy pots) and just put a vented lid on top? Or does it need to be a larger mass of soil, like that in a milk jug? For plants that don't like to be disturbed/transplanted, like zinnias, it seems like it would be nice to plant them into individual wells. Plus I have some seed-starting trays around but not many milk jugs :)

2) I read the FAQ about direct sowing into containers (as in sowing into a large ceramic or terracotta pot in which you'll leave the seedlings to make a mixed planter) - but if I do this, do I need to add a lid? If so, any suggestions for how to make/obtain a suitable lid?

I did try direct sowing some zinnia zahara seeds directly into large terracotta planters last year, but very few germinated. I think I had sown them a few weeks before the last frost date, and It definitely got below freezing.

Any input would be appreciated. Thank you!
