I lived in Seattle for decades, then moved to California near San Francisco where the climate is also too cool for the blooms of 'S.D.L.M.' to open. I gave it to someone who lives in a warmer climate. If you would like a Bourbon rose that does perform well in Seattle I suggest that you post a question on the Antique rose forum for Seattlesuze and ask her if she knows of any Bourbons do well where you live. A fragrant pink Old Rose that did perform well in our Seattle garden, is 'Mlle. Cecille Brunner' It is sometimes nicknamed Cecil Brunner, but was named for a 12 year old French girl. Its' dainty pink Tea-rose shaped blossoms have a sweet Old Rose scent with a hint of spice, and the handsome bush has pretty dark green foliage. You can see photos of it on helpmefind.com. The original form is a small bush at c. 4 and 1/2 feet tall to 5' tall, and has few prickles making it a good rosebush to plant near a pathway. The Spray and climbing forms of 'Cecille Brunner' grow to be much larger plants. vintagegardens.com often sells it, as does hortico.com under "Polyantha". Luxrosa

Mine is the climbing sport. This is her at the end of her Spring show. I am in south Louisiana and she is my absolute favorite of all my roses. I don’t care if she balls. There are SO many blooms that don’t that it doesn’t matter if some do. I adore this rose. She has few thorns and laughs at pests and diseases and her canes are dainty. shes not like New Dawn. She’s very pliable. I just love her. A happy easy going floriferous old fashioned cabbage rose who doesn’t quit. Her foliage is a lovely green too.

Jannike, my Tradescants have been good performers but have taken a while to establish when grown own-root. Worth the wait. My climate is very different from yours and I will be curious to hear how your plants progress. I believe Tradescant can become a more substantial rose in your climate. It reaches about 4 feet in my garden when grown as a shrub and lightly pruned. In Portland, it can also be a stiff, small climber when coaxed and encouraged. Tends to bloom and rest in cycles. Gorgeous, fragrant, mostly disease resistant in my organic garden. My Souv de la Malmaisons have been blush. In my cooler, cloudier climate, Souv is pinkish white in hot weather and whitish pink in milder weather. Always fragrant and lovely. Balls when wet, so I have to toss a batch of blooms sometimes, but Souv is worth it! Both of these beauties are very romantic. I can't help sticking my nose right into their yummy fluffiness. I'll be curious to hear about Alnwick. I haven't grown it. Carol

The growth rate and ultimate size of rose plants is very dependent on climate and other cultural factors. I've found that to be especially true for OGRs in general -- and Bourbons in particular. SdlM and all of her sports are about 4' tall in my garden, with Souvenir de St Anne's being a bit taller. The size estimates that Vintage illustrates for roses have not been very helpful when selecting varieties for my zonal conditions. For instance, Vintage describes the Bourbon 'Mme Alfred de Rougemont' as being very compact and low-growing. In my garden, however, the performance of my Vintage plant has been quite the opposite, & I've had to relocate it as a result. A Bourbon that is said to truly remain "petite" is 'Reverend H. d'Ombrain'. It's a very rare plant that was imported by EuroDesert Roses and recently transferred to Vintage Gardens. Altho I can't locate it anywhere on Vintage's website, it did appear on the list of bands they received from EuroDesert & were offering for sale. You might contact Gita at Vintage to ask if they have any left.
