Full StoryThe recent thread Peaches and Insects mentioned how peaches grow very well in Georgia with fairly intensive management for pests and diseases. I'm wondering what that meant in the 1800's. Obviously Georgia has a long history of growing peaches. I can't imagine there was much in the way of sprays, protectants, mating disruption, etc. in the 1800's. How did people manage to grow peaches commercially back then? Were any of the major diseases or pests not present in the Southeast back then? (If so, which ones, and when did they show up?) It definitely seems to be the case that what must have been feasible then isn't today, but I can't understand why it would have been any different.
