Money trees with curled leaves after 2 days in my care

Comments (6)Bromion - in addition to a lack of light, it sounds like your plant might be suffering from too little water and possibly from a high level of salts in the soil, which would make it very difficult for the plant to take up water and keep the most distal parts of the leaves (tips and margins) supplied with an adequate amount of water. FWIW, misting isn't going to make a significant or even a noticeable difference in either the appearance or physiological well-being of your plant, so please don't put much faith in its redemptive powers - it just doesn't work that way. With nearly 1,500 minutes in a day, marginally raising humidity for 10 of them cannot make a difference. Raising the humidity in the room on a permanent basis can offer SOME relief from the spoiled foliage resultant of the plant's inability to move water efficiently, but concentrating on the actual cause will always be more fruitful. Almost always, you'll find the root cause of spoiled foliage somewhere in the triangle of (less than ideal) soil choice, (less than ideal) watering habits, and a high level of soluble salts in the soil, all of which impair the plants ability to move water efficiently. Whether or not you should or shouldn't continue to fertilize at any given time depends on several variables, and w/o knowing those variables no one can give meaningful advice as to what is appropriate. Soil choice, and particularly it's porosity, watering habits, type of fertilizer you've been using, what you will be using, the temperature variation where your plant is sited, light levels .... are just some of the things that enter into determining what is/isn't appropriate. When you water, it's best to water so at least 10-20% of the total volume of water applied exits the drain hole of the pot. If you cannot water that generously w/o having to worry about root rot, you might wish to consider a change to a more appropriate soil as soon as the timing is appropriate. Let me know if you're interested in additional suggestions on how to effectively deal with flushing the soil and the ill effects of an overly water-retentive soil if you think that applies. Comments (6)You mean Pachira aquatica? I did a lot of research on them when I was given one and found that they are wetland plants that normally grow in swamps. I guess the "aquatica" in their name should be a giveaway. They do like full sun but if yours was behind screens then it would have needed time to adapt to direct sun. The sudden increase in sun intensity, increase in temperature while the car was stationary, and lack of water would have stressed it a lot. Mine is in the ground but I regularly saturate it with water during the dry season. It gets direct sun to about midday and then shade from other trees in the afternoon. I think the problem with yours will be lack of water....See MoreSoCal Avocado Tree w/ Yellow Wilting Leaves
Comments (10)I'm in exactly the situation that Tastie Cerreale describes above. Like so much so that it's a bit eerie. I'm in the Hayward area of the east bay, just moved into a house with an established avocado tree and its doing very poorly under my care. Soil is pretty clay heavy and dense. We had a major heat wave in June that really kicked off my avocado's problems. After putting out a ton of new growth in April/May, the leaves on it (both young and old) started to yellow quite a bit. Then it dropped the majority of it's leaves (maybe 3/4). I got worried and did some research and got some citrus and avocado fertilizer that I spread around under it. I also worked some compost into the soil under it. I also put it on a regular watering schedule of once per week. This was going on for about a month and it put out a ton of new growth, the blooms set and tons of tiny avos started to form and I was feeling pretty good. Many of its leaves were still yellow, but I hoped that I was over the hump and it just needed time to recover. But in the past few days it appears to have taken a major turn for the worse. I watered it this past Sunday (8 days since prior watering; soil felt fairly dry on the surface, but not totally dry; I applied probably 20-30 gallons of water to it over the course of 10 minutes, intending to water it deeply). Within a few hours of being watered, all of the leaves on the tree started drooping dramatically. Now they're all limp as can be and have remained that way for 3 or 4 days. I was concerned it was over watering, but figured it would bounce back as it dried back up, but I'm not seeing any sign of recovery yet. Is once per week really too frequent to be watering it? Is there any hope for my poor avo tree?Any advise? Thanks much....See Morehuskymom87
