Glass Totems at Longwood Garden

I was amazed to see several glass totem bird baths at the Christmas light display in Longwood Gardens. They were lighted and very beautiful. Someone must be a follower of 'Garden Junk.'

I would have made pictures but my new camera's battery died way before expected. We are just getting use to each other and I am not sure it is going to be the love I feel/felt for my old camera.

Its stunning in the sunlight! I'm wondering if the orb on top might be either an old fisherman's float for the nets (yes they used blown glass before styrofoam was invented) OR a replica produced for tourists. When I was a young girl I bought a little blue one at a tourist shop in Maine at the ocean. They also had big ones and I think these replicas came in green and amber and blue. I have a couple of "real" ones in my garden - not half so pretty but definitely interesting. I guess you can still find them on the beach as the Japanese used them until recently. The little point and not perfect shape you mention made me think of them. kathy

I bet that will be a sparkler out in the garden! Love the cherub on top with his "mushroom." Great innovative idea for odd pieces like that. Wonderful job! I can't wait to see your next totem (because I know it's coming ... lol).

Adorable!! Love the colors for her!! My Garden Ladies have so far been clear. You definitely will need something flat and large on the bottom to keep her from being tipped over. I mostly use microwave trays that I pick up at GW. They can be covered with mulch or dirt. Here are a couple of my Garden Ladies that I've covered the bottom plates on. Seal well with silicone, so they don't sweat. Ladies don't like to sweat! LOL Mine are a couple of years old and holding up well. I do take them in for our winters here in Ohio. They're a lot taller than they look here! LOL Poor angle...and a tall planter! Poor lighting too...you hardly even notice the little one in the top part of the planter! ~Sandy~

I have some that I bought a while back that are made of porcelain pottery material that has been fired that I am going to make a fountain out of if my hubby will ever help me finish it. We have all the parts ready have drilled all the holes basically have to put it all together with the pump in the big basin. I am determined to get him to help me on that project very soon so it can go in the atrium. My neighbor said she would help me if he didn't. I have wanted some type of water feature in the atrium since we moved here. Jasdip I know some of the people on garden junkers talk about drilling holes in theirs so it probably could be done, I would be terrified of shattering the glass. My husband was saying it would be really pretty with tiny lights inside too. Big Lots had for Christmas these tiny tiny lights on a strand with a battery pack they were about the size of a match head. I knew I should have picked some of those up on clearance! LOL

I've seen the glass totems on here many times, but I live in zone 4/5. Hard cold winters. Do you just take them inside during the winter? Do you ever worry about them falling over, breaking, cracking, freezing, hail?

I live in zone 7, but I still take most of my totems inside of my gazebo. I have a couple that I leave out, but it's safer if they're not in the direct freeze/thaw. I've had a couple of my glass containers break because water got in them and they cracked. They don't generally fall over if you have a big plate at the bottom. I love them enough in the Spring/Summer months to tote them all into the gazebo at the beginning of winter.

I live in zone 4, with some temps that border on zone 3, and I leave the glass bottles on my bottle tree and in my garden borders on stakes out all winter. Marlene hit it on the head with her observation that water getting into a bottle or glass bowl and then freezing is what typically causes breakage. My bottles are all upside down, so they stay safe during the coldest winters.

Animals running through a garden account for the breakages I've experienced, but this can happen in any season!
