Good grief ~ where will it all end? What age group does this Junior Oxford Dictionary propose to serve? Seems to me that the editors of this dictionary are taking out words that young people might need to have defined, and adding words that a young person probably already knows. What good is that?

Kids have good eyesight -- I say, keep the old words, add the new ones if you must, and reduce the type font if the book becomes "too big for little hands". Thyrkas is right, kids already know the new technology jargon, there is no need to bump words like dwarf, monarch, or bluebell from the dictionary.

I think it's completely appalling.

I agree with all of you. Political correctness has gone crazy.

Did any of you read the article about taxing farmers who raise cattle and pigs for the air pollution they cause with their natural functions? Chicken, anyone? It was suggested by the EPA.

Do you think people are so overwhelmed by the big problems the world faces that they look for smaller ones to deal with? Or do they just have too much time on their hands?

This is unbelievable; those kids are being robbed. The words they've replaced are words that any reader of books would need to know. And I agree, the kids already know the jargon; it's the adults that need to have it defined!

true story:

Substituting in a class for "gifted" students the other day. Student asks if he may use the computer to google a word he does not recognize in his reading. I suggest a dictionary. He grabs the R encyclopedia. I again suggest a dictionary. He is flummoxed. I am disheartened. I wonder if the day of the paper and print dictionary is waning. I teach him to use the dictionary found in the classroom. Oh yes, he remembers dictionary races in 3rd grade-but google is faster. So is the dictionary in WORD.

Cece, my DD (8th grade) is the same way. She'll use the computer dictionary rather than pick up the dictionary or thesaurus that are on the desk directly in front of her. It makes me crazy. All of her homework is done online, too. The text books for math are accessed via computer and the Spanish assignments are done completely online. My DS (4th grade) is also being encouraged to write his book reports on the computer rather than doing a first draft (at least) with pencil and paper. And finally, though the school paid lip service to teaching cursive, none of the kids are expected to actually use it. The list goes on. Am I a complete fuddy-duddy? *sigh*

Ach! Every time I turn around it seems something that I was good at in school has been devalued: Spelling, dictionary-using, arithmetic in my head, shorthand, and now penmanship! Cursive is no longer important. I sure feel like a relic.

I asked my grandnephew, age 11, before he left for school this morning if he knew what heather was. No doubt, he thinks his old auntie is a bit daft because he asked me in turn, "Heather who?"

I must confess that I like looking things up on the computer. It is more comprehensive than books and takes up a lot less space. I have junked a lot of my home reference library, it was out of date anyway. However, it is good to have a dictionary close by the bed, especially when I read a book by an author who uses what we used to call "long words" in junior school!
My main complaint is bad spelling or the incorrect use of words or sayings.
For some reason, people will say "The proof is in the pudding" especially in TV discussions. I yell out "No! It is in the EATING you idiot!" Also on TV news recently LOS Vegas, "I always thought it was Los Angeles or Las Vegas, so which one are you talking about?"
I love to talk to my TV, it never answers back!
