A chance to look back

I was looking for the thread that had the name of a book that interested me. I looked all the way back to the last posting still listed. It was a fun thing to do.....to see all the old posts.... to read about the discussions about this, that and the other. Gee, we are interesting people. I started coming here when the iVillage took over and I was having fits getting accepted. My ISP didn't seem to like all the pop-ups and ads. I have three different names!

That search would have taken me days to accomplish, agnesp! But I'll bet it was a good time - appropriate, too, for finishing out 2006. Did you find the title you were looking for? What was it, if you don't mind my asking?

nope, I didn't find it. It was about a Laotion coroner that had access to the spirt world, but didn't know it. A lot of droll, dry humor. A mystery, but different. I wanted to get more of that author's books, but neglected to write down his name. %^**&^%

It's pretty common for mice to girdle a tree like that, and it's usually a death sentence. If you catch the damage right away you can sometimes save the tree by making bridge grafts, but they don't always work, and it sounds like this tree is past the stage where you could try that anyway. If there is no sign of buds swelling by now, then your tree is dead. The next time you plant a tree you should wrap the base in chicken wire to prevent the mice (or whatever) from destroying it again. Also, keep mulch away from the trunk - several inches of cleared ground is usually enough to discourage mice from going after the bark. Is it possible that the tree was girdled last summer, when you noticed the leaves dying and that you only noticed the bark damage now? If that's the case, then there's no hope in heck of saving the tree - it's long dead :-( BP

I always figure... where there's green, there's life. Andy. I am curious. Did you protect them at all and if so, what exactly did you do? You and I are in about the same climatic zone so I'm curious what we did differently. Ours are all still in pots, but I tossed them in the protective structure that we built, with the Washingtonia Robusta. All not only survived, but did so nicely. Here's a pix of the Washingtonia. The needles are not in the pic, but were inside with the palm.

Tam, I don't mind at all - after all, I copied it from someone else. At the time I received it, I was just reaching a point in my life when I, too, was realizing that each day is a one-of-a-kind moment and needs to be savored. Gene, I agree that falling leaves can give us feelings of nostalgia. Ah, but that fallen leaf does return - just in a different form next time around. Instead of a leaf, picture it in your mind as food for next spring's flower, or part of the energy needed to form a drop of rain. I like to think of myself that way, too....Ummm...wonder what I will become next time around? :) Wasn't today just wonderful? Gerry

boy thats one tall dog ... lol .. wait until it buds out ... and then properly prune out all dead stuff ... it will take on a new shape ... and given a few years .... it will fill in .. unless it dies ... who knows .... i encourage you to give it until next fall ... to see what happens ... UNLESS ... its simply going to drive you insane looking at it all year long ... and if that is the case.. just be done with it ... lifes to short to be reminded about those horrible people.. every time you look at your house ... welcome to the forums ... ken ps: is there plastic or landscape cloth under that mulch?

Actually, Thirty-Three Teeth is the first in the series. The Coroner's Lunch comes second.
