O Little Town of Bethlehem - a question...

OK, I'm puzzled.

I was looking up the words of the well-known carol O Little Town of Bethlehem on the web. And I'm puzzled. Every version on the web that I can find (including one on a UK web site) has the second verse as...

For Christ is born of Mary

And gathered all above

While mortals sleep, the angels keep

Their watch of wondering love.

O morning stars together

Proclaim the holy birth

And praises sing to God the King

And Peace to men on earth.

And that's not what I've ever sung. Here in the UK, in every hymn-book I've ever read, the first and second quatrains are reversed - that is:-

O morning stars together

Proclaim the holy birth

And praises sing to God the King

And Peace to men on earth.

For Christ is born of Mary

And gathered all above

While mortals sleep, the angels keep

Their watch of wondering love.

Is this a transatlantic change or what? The words were written by Phillips Brooks, who came from Boston, Mass.
