And to you Kath and everyone old and new at RP.
While you sit in the Aussie sun watching 'your' cricket team thrash us in the Ashes series, spare a thought for us in Europe who are suffering from an unusually cold December with too much snow and ice and bitter temps . . . 25F will be tomorrow's high.
I always live in hope of a book or two for a pressie; reading certainly beats the trash shown on TV during the holidays. ;-)

I haven't forsaken the Cottage Garden. My daughter-in-law kept bugging me to join FB so I could connect with my kids and grandkids and get lots of pictures of everyone. I don't play any of the games. I have found a great bunch of friends through political and gardening searches, and also reconnected with cousins, siblings, nieces and nephews, and old girlfriends of my boys who still call me "Mom", and their families. Also, my other interests, such as the Sierra Club, National Wildlife, Arbor Day Foundation, and others. I have found old band friends and have contact with DH's band members and the wives. It keeps me hopping, I tell you. But, the Garden Web is my home and as soon as it is Springtime, I will be back on here bugging the heck out of all of you again. DH's band will be going down to Austin this summer sometime for some music festival (?), so I want to hook up with all my friends in that area while there, even if just for a coffee break or lunch. I definitely plan on going to the Rose nurseries while down that way. :) I come on at least once a week and read your posts. I have posted off and on since September. Hey! I saw lots of new people on here. Cool beans! Saw that my friend Lorna had posted. I have been worried about her for months. Glad she is okay. We went down to SC to see my new grandson, as you know, and when we got home, I came down with Bronchial Pneumonia. Swell! (I think I am allergic to something down there - that's the second time that has happened) Took a long time to totally get well. My parents haven't been well, and Papa is failing, so have been busy with them too. My chickens are still laying big fine eggs in several shades of tan, brown and pure white. My girls and good little hens. We are still in drought. No significant rain for months - back to July. Fires around us. That is keeping me busy trying to irrigate in winter - fun, fun, fun! Crocheted some things. Always a busy bee. Other than getting fatter, nothing else is new! Oh, and those of you whom I promised plants and roses to...I haven't forgotten you wanted them. I decided it would be best to wait until spring to send them. With our drought, they weren't looking to spry this summer, and by fall they were down-right ugly. I don't want to send you plants that look like that! This spring, they will be pretty again. We're getting a good soaker misty rain today - it started yesterday evening. Yippee! That will certainly help. Hope this is enough news to last awhile. :) Right now I am cooking and baking up a storm, getting ready for our family Christmas gathering tomorrow. I need to go check the giblets I have simmering on the stove, so best get off here and do it. Sure smells good! Love you all. ~Annie

And, a Merry one from near San Francisco. This is the first year in a very long time that I've had all my children in the same house for Xmas, plus most of their kids. So, it's been hectic and much fun. I'd forgotten how much work it was cooking for a large gathering but it will be one to remember. Sending love and best wishes. Linda

Belated Merry Christmas to all. Especially to Triciae, who was on my mind a lot this holiday and will be during future holidays. Dear Wonder Woman, I hope you are doing well, where ever you are. Thank you for showing me what courage and strength and kindness are. We drove down to the Bay Area for the holidays. Christmas Eve we had dinner with our good friends in Berkeley, raw oysters with mignonette, cracked crab, and the traditional Buche de Noel. Last night we had dinner with other good friends in Richmond, tenderloin, mashed potatoes and a warm cauliflower-brussel sprout salad. I made half of the tenderloin, cut pieces 1" thick and tied them into rounds, pan cooked, with a sauce of reduced white balsamic vinegar, Muscat wine, shallots and garlic, butter, sauteed mushroom stems, blended smooth, then simmered over whole mushroom caps. No recipe, just made it up. Our hostess roasted the rest of the tenderloin with a red wine and shallot reduction. We were supervised by a friend who is a head chef at a large hotel and, for the first time in many years, didn't have to work on Christmas day, but was nonetheless pressed into service which he did with good humour. I've been negotiating a stressful matter at work for the past few weeks. As of Dec 24, we were uncertain whether our little business unit would be shut down and I had prepared myself to be jobless come Jan 1st. That all got resolved satisfactorily at noon on Christmas Eve, final document review pending, so for the first time in a month, I was able to relax and unclench. It was nice.

Vee, I wish I could send you some warmer temps -- we're looking at mid-30's F and no snow here in Connecticut.

It is 6.30am and there is a promise of 38C later! My cards from the UK have been held up by the weather but there you all are, beaming good wishes from all over the globe.

Actually Vee, we have had an unseasonably cool December too. Today is forecast to be 30Ã¯Â¿Â½C but we have only had a couple of days that warm this month.
And as for the cricket, your fellows won the first Test, then a draw, then we won the third, so the Boxing Day Test promises to be very interesting.

Happy, happy, joy, joy... to everyone across the globe.

This is the first time that I have actually been able to log on to RP since I got a virus on my 'puter a week or so ago... I have been reading, but not able to comment. :-(

So happy wishes for a peaceful Christmas! (And good books!)

A very Happy Christmas to all! This morning I listened to the Festival of Lessons and Carols from King's College Chapel (yesterday too) and now I am listening to Dicken's Christmas Carol. In a short time I will be off to a friend's house for dinner, and then later on to work at the hospital. All in all a good day.

A couple of days ago someone observed that Christmas is such a big holiday that even people who don't observe Christmas have Christmas traditions, such as going out for Chinese food or making pizza or lasagne at home. So true - and so Merry Christmas to all!

Late best wishes to all of you from me, too.

We all got home to my brother's and my sister's, who since her husband's death early this year is now living in our old homeplace across the road from him, before a 3" wet snow fell overnight. We woke to a beautiful white Christmas with snow covering the fields and lying on the cedars and a redheaded woodpecker busy on a tree outside the kitchen window. We had 24 for a big country breakfast and 29 for a big early afternoon dinner. Although the roads were clear, huge snowflakes kept falling and frightened a few people away. Otherwise, we would have had eight to ten more.

We came home last night and after church today had a bowl of soup at Panera for lunch. Well, and then some Christmas-present candy later in the afternoon. Yesterday, I thought I'd never eat again. I'll be back to walking at the mall and a low carb diet tomorrow and am giving serious consideration to joining Curves. I wore a new sweater this morning, and some of the bulges showing through it were definitely not curves.

Belated holiday greetings from a frigid South! We had snow flurries here in Charleston, yesterday, and today it will only be in the 20's. Much of the South had a White Christmas, with record-breaking snowfall. Atlanta (my home city) had its first White Xmas since the 1880's.

Here in New York state...

The weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful,
So if you've no place to go,
Let it snow! Let it snow! Let it snow !

But in our case, it is more like : Let it blow! since the wind is howling incredibly with not much snow to show for it all.

A good day to hunker down with a good book ( just began the first book of Maisie Dobbs series and absolutely love it ) and stay in my jammies !

Heaven..........sigh.

We have been hearing terrible reports about E coast weather on the BBC. Hope all you RP'ers have battened down the hatches and are keeping warm . . . and that your central heating oil doesn't cost 62pence (what's that? about 50 cents) a LITRE . . .soon we will have to buy it by the teaspoonful.
At last our temps have crawled above freezing and the snow is beginning to melt . . . so floods are forecast!
