That was absolutely adorable! eaglesight, YOU are a blessing!! Please add update pictures to this thread; I'd love to see how your bed is doing now. For those of us who have just recently discovered the lasagna bed concept -- and as a 58 year old gardener, believe me I'm rejoicing!! -- "The First Book of the Lasagna Bed" was a great find. z6a friend in NJ: I'm sure by now you've found this, but if not, google Pat Lanza, who wrote the book. I'm online tonight to order copies for myself and my S-I-L. No more digging in rocks, roots and hard clay. I'm elated!!

Thank you all for helping me through my terrible, horrible, very bad, no good day. I love the way many of you suggested that the universe was getting all the bad things out of its system and sunny days were surely on the horizon. Today actually was much better. I can't express how much all your comments meant to me while I was throwing myself a pity party. I did want to make sure to share some of the positive things that have happened last night and today. My sweet son saved me a cupcake from his V-Day party. DH's grandmother who has been in the hospital for a week has improved and has been moved to a rehab facility. No damage was done to my car. My students did take roll and ask about me when I was late. My best teacher friend shared her orange with me at lunch. I'm finally getting my ESL endorsement added to my teaching license. My principal moved my observation back a day because of a meeting he had to attend. Thanks again for the kind words, especially the comment about my writing. That really made me smile. One of my long term goals is to write a book. I just can't figure out what I would write about and who would want to read it. :)~

It's just Jan & I here, so on Christmas morning I stick my head out long enough to look out the window..See the snow and cold, and I tuck my head back under the covers to continue my hybernation. Jan was an only child and her Mother & Dad have both passed away and all my family are over 600 miles from here, so it's just the two of us. Somewhere around lunch time we get up and finish cooking our holiday feast, then we sit back and discuss all the things that we intended to buy for Christmas, but had already purchased throughout the year, because we needed them at the time, not three or four months later....LOL By example, in August our refrigerator died and Jan was in a tizzy because she simply could not figure out how to fit a new one into our budget.... I sat back and thought a bit and I said, "I got an idea, how about we get one time and I will pay the bill out of my money, rather than the household budget, and we will call it a Xmass present." At 9am the next morning we had a new fridge delivered and yesterday I tied a big red bow on the handle." We do go through the pretext of exchanging a few stocking stuffer items, but in truth, as far as big ticket items go, we either have them or don't need them, so whats the point?

Might as well have been home alone today, only I wouldn't have worked quite as hard and would probably have enjoyed it more. Busted my rear making a nice Christmas dinner for DH, which he finished in five minutes and went back to his garage to "putter." So then the kitchen had to be put back together. Nothing from him all afternoon, until the call, "what have you got in mind for supper?" Fed him again, and at 6:50 he goes to bed. Granted, his back hurts because he spent too much time on his feet "puttering" but sheesh! My kids are 3,000 miles away and busy with their own family and traditions, but I would really have liked a call. I am their only mom and grandma, after all! Okay, pity party over. It wasn't a bad day, after all, and tomorrow I get to go to work. YAAYY! And DH will take me out for Mexican food tomorrow evening.

There will be a lot of books in our family this Christmas. Both my husband Tom and I passed out our Amazon wish lists. We bought books for his four grandchildren and for several of his children and for one of mine.

Books are not the only presents I like, but they are my favorite.

I have bought books for my 4 great-grandchildren. All of their mothers are bedtime readers and are happy to receive them. I like the books with a cd which the children can listen to as they are not old enough to read. Of course they all have cd players!

I was talking to my two kids the other day, who are now 24 and 25, and asked them if they remembered their dad and I reading to them every night.. and they said yes, how much they loved it and that as parents, we did everything right. Who needs a Christmas present after that remark? :)

My husband says now technology has reached a point where you can send your kid to bed with a computer thingy that reads aloud to them...OMG that is horrible. Tell me this is not so!

Janalyn, good to see you posting again.
I expect that a computer can do that. They do everything but make coffee! I bought my 3yo GGD some cds and a cd player and it is such a help to her mother, she says. Now when the little girl wakes up in the night, she puts it on with her bedtime songs and goes off to sleep again. Her parents can turn over and get their rest!
Now we have to get the 1yo to learn how to use one too!

It has been an absolutely lovely Christmas, good cheer, good music, and piles of books all around. As for me, I received a book on conifers, one on native plant gardening, and one on American art tiles, each a delight to my eyes. In addition, one darling daughter gave me an Amazon gift card. I am not ashamed to say that I have already spent it, 3 used hardback copies of old favorite novels (2 by Mary Stewart and 1 by Barbara Michaels), along with a book on 1950's sewing patterns. My son also gave me a book gift card to be spent in a bricks-and-mortar store. I am in bliss. Except, of course, that I ate way too much food. Very good food, though.

My thoughtful BF gave me three books for Xmas: One is on the clairvoyance of Sir Winstom Churchill, in terms of predicting major world events, another the latest novel by Sebastian Faulke, and lastly, a well-illustrated book about the historic architecture of my home city, Charleston. As the Brits would say," I'm chuffed."

I didn't get a single book this Christmas, but my daughter did give me a pair of lounging pajama bottoms that are printed all over with little books and many, many words like fiction, biography, mystery, romance, history, etc., etc., etc.

I cannot remember when I was last gifted with a book, but that's ok. I gave my girlfriend "Nomads of Niger," a big picture book, and I gave my grandson a board book, "Carl's Christmas." He likes Carl, and so do I. Such a good babysitter he is!
