Ring Out Wild Bells - Happy New Year

We will hear these bells again this New Year and once more hope that the sentiments of the second stanza will be realised:
lines written by Alfred, Lord Tennyson on hearing Waltham Abbey bells from High Beech on New Years Eve 1837:-
/Ring out wild bells, to the wild sky,
/The flying clouds, the frosty light:
/The year is dying in the night;

Jan, I have heard the poem in a musical version many year ago, but cannot remember the composer. We will be listening to the bells (wind direction permitting) from our neatest parish church, St Mary's, Lydney. Not as well-known or ancient as Waltham Abbey, but a beautiful fourteenth century building in the 'Eary English' style of architecture . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . A Happy New Year to you all from Gloucestershire, England.

Oh, LOve it...a Hippy Weight loss club! COunt me in...too many hours in my recliner recovering from surgery, plus a hubby who gets snarky over not being at work during vacation...turned back into my sweetheart the day he went back to work! Darn! But hard on the diet..hiding out with carbs to keep me going until "Vacation" ended! NOw the dang thumbs going to keep me from my favorite winter activities like walking Josie pup and clearing windfallen branches off our winter woods trails, pruning, etc. I propose we all send a beautiful new hippy bulb next fall to the biggest looser by a certain date...anyone else want tojoin in? Chaz, with the most to loose you could end up the real winner here! I lost abut 60 lbs a few years ago, and then got real with it when Blood sugar went up and relost some then somemore...down to 200 now frm about 260 (5'9") but really want to lose anower 40 lbs(plus what ever has gone back on this winter!) My method of weight loss was easy when I was active. My Dr had one simple sentence that worked for me...Chaz, this might work for you also. His sentence.....? "Cut the carbs>" No counting, now weighing food, no negotiating. I found a brand of cottage cheese that I really liked and had a big bowl of it with blueberries every day for lunch. Too bad costco no longer carries that brand! THey went to Darigold which tastes bitter to me. But find something you like that is not carb heavy and you can grab it without thinking when at work or you come in form the garden. And I hope Chase is going to support you in this? Not going to work if he is eating all the things you like but should not! After a while on this I totally lost my taste for Ice cream and chocolate even...did not crave them at all. THink of it as CHoosing life, not as depriving your self! Put up pictures of the slim flight attendent you were and remember how easy it was to do things then! And when tempted to sit and eat...put on the gardening gloves and get them dirty! Best wishes to all of us for renewed health and agility this year!

Ours was utterly quiet, although not unpleasant :). Both kids were off doing their own NYE celebration so the house was nice and calm. We ate dinner, chatted, then he went to sleep early and I read for awhile. Boring? Maybe but also a moment to cherish being secure in our lives and with so much for which to be grateful. Wasn't long after our noise stopped that Miss Kitty came back...she hadn't eaten so I tucked her back in the box pulled the blankies down over the doorway and I think she stayed in there. I hope so..we were in for a cold night. I gave up on the forever lasting boring Monopoly game...Denny finally gave up...then Jeff gave up...but the girls and son in law played until someone actually won...that was two o'clock. Then they picked up and went home...Left a couple kids here for the night... Then I crashed. Was a good night....except I was too tired... patti

Wendy, it is soooo nice to see you here! I think of you, Gordy and the kids often, and keep you in my prayers. I'm really sorry about your son, and will pray that he will soon be home. Gray skies in Vancouver but no rain. We'll enjoy a quiet evening at home and at midnight, listen to the many freighters in the bay sounding their horns which echo from mountain to mountain. Happy New Year!

Here in suburban Washington, DC it is grey and dreary as well but warmer than it has been for most of December so I am happy. Some of the pansies are trying to bloom again. They are such amazing flowers -- give them a couple of days above freezing and the blooms appear! Anyway, all of that makes for a happy end to 2005. Happy New Year to everyone!

We had 5 minutes of sunshine and now gray again-snow to the north of us (hi PAM) but rain here-ice tonight but the neighbors are gathering across the street so no driving worries.............................Blessings of the new year to all.

Happy New Year from Kentucky where we have had a sunny day with temperature now at 46 F. We will attend a watch night service at church tonight with candlelight communion service at midnight and then go out for breakfast with DD, SIL, and grandson.

Happy new year from Texas! It's been a lovely day - 70s and blue sky - and tomorrow is going to be the same thing, apparently. (A little more wind perhaps, but same blue sky.) Happy new year greetings and plenty of good books for all in 2006!

We have about four hours left of 2005 here in Hawai'i since we trail practically the whole rest of the world in time. But since most of you are already into 2006, I hope the beginning has been propitious and it will be a great year for everyone. 'A Happy New Year to all our readers.' Here, at 10.50am 1st January 2006, in downtown Pontardawe, Wales, UK, it is cloudy, with intermittent rain and warm for the time of year. BBC Radio 3 is blasting out Part 1 of the New Year Concert from Vienna; Part 2 will be transmitted on BBCTV as well as radio, after the interval. I love these annual concerts - the music feels so fresh and clean, like the year itself, and the Hall, when you actually see it on TV, is beautifully decorated with flowers. Dido

Our 'wild bell' was a cowbell rung up and down the paths of the retirement village to wake up anyone who had decided to go to sleep and let them know the New Year had arrived!.....Happy New Year to you all, it has been lovely finding kindred spirits to "talk" to.

Speaking of bells, we went to a New Year's Eve party hosted by a woman from Spain so we got introduced to the Spanish way of bringing in the new year. Banging a saucepan with a wooden spoon 12 times and eating a grape for each bong that you do for good luck. Great fun. The first day of 2006 here in Texas was a bad dust storm - very dry and very very windy with brown sky... Yuck, but part of life on the South Plains.

Happy New Year to everyone from Tidewater, Virginia. Grey and foggy here today, but mild weather, which is ideal for walking. There are roses and pansies still in bloom here, and pink camelias. ......................................I miss the clang of church bells -- wish they would bring that custom back where I live.
