New Words

I learned some new words in recent months I thought I'd share.

An article in The Atlantic about Wal-Mart used the economic term "monopsony". In a monopoly, a business uses its market power to jack-up prices to its customers. In a monopsony, it uses market power to drive down prices from its suppliers. Governments can also be monopsonies; for example, when they bargain to lower prices from drug companies supplying public-health programs.

Surfing Wikipedia, I came across "misotheism" which is a hatred of God, or if one is also an atheist a hatred of religion and religious expression. It seems like an accurate term for such writers as Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, and maybe Philip Pullman.

In Murder in Amsterdam, Ian Buruma mentions a Dutch word, verongelijktheid, which is a feeling of being wronged, not by an individual, but by society as a whole. I don't think I'll be able to remember this or find it useful, but it was interesting that there would be a word in Dutch for such a common emotion but not as far as I know in English.
