Book for Sale

I did a really dumb thing and ordered a book from Book Depository that I had already ordered earlier this year. It is The Shadows in the Street, the newest in the Simon Serrailler series by Susan Hill, which is not yet available in my area of the U.S. It cost $15.99, and the Post Office wanted $14.00 to return it by mail, so I would be glad to sell it to anyone who is interested for a reasonable sum.

You can easily resell it by listing at Amazon.com.
Then you will be paid for media shipping. I am not sure why the PO wants that much to send it since media mail is rarely over %3.50.

I'd say 35.oo, and I got mine free. Here's a good one to watch out for: "Bromeliads" by Francisco Oliva-Esteve hard back 14x10 comes in about 8 pounds; list a year ago at $135.00 Also "The Book of Bromeliads and Hawaiian Tropical Flowers" by Ronald W. Parkhurst-Hanalei Nursery. Blooming Bromeliads(Banesh i belive) has been out for quite a long time but still one of the best. Used book sales, dusty ol' book shops, library sales, they are my favorite haunts and past times. I end up sitting cross-legged on the floor all dusty, I look like a bum.. a book bum. However...mini rant to follow... while I love to browse and purchase books, I get so fed up with booksellers and antique dealers who are pushy and grabby and seem to have no manners what-so-ever. They are only interested in the bottom line - profit and condition - and I feel like elbowing them straight into the ol' textbooks section. Ah.. thank you for your patience. Rant over. After years and years of searching for a copy of Workers in the Dawn by George Gissing, I do confess to popping onto an old book site, finding the one I wanted and punching in the golden ticket numbers.. that would be my charge card number. Presto. Twenty-four hours and about $100 later, I owned it. Turns out, it is a very hard to find book and finding it for under $100 is nearly unheard of. And if I find another copy for a quarter someplace? I'll buy it and give it to a fellow Gissing fan. I am all for the thrill of the hunt to find that special title, but after a while, I just want my hands on that book. PAM

I know book rate should not be very much. I was so shocked that I didn't question the clerk.

Thanks to you, yoyobon, I have listed the book on Amazon, but it isn't as easy as it would appear when you first start the procedure. At any rate, it's on there.

Maybe you didn't tell the post office clerk that it wouldn't be sent first class. It seems they always assume people are sending their stuff 1st class. And can't you send a book 2nd or 3rd class? It's cheaper than 1st cl. because it takes longer to reach the addressee. When I've ordered a book by mail, I only paid $4 to $6 ... all within the past year, and one of them was from a book shop in the English countryside. (I'm in NY City -- so it had a whole ocean to cross, even charged me less than what I'd paid on the Web using my bank card; the refund showed up on the following month's bank statement!)

I did tell her it was a book, but I definitely should have reiterated that when she said first class and $14. I certainly have learned a lesson I won't forget!

Isn't there a "media rate" which is cheaper?

I've sold books regularly with Amazon.com for over 9 years.
There IS a media rate and it is very cheap as compared to other ways of shipping. Sometimes if a book is very light, it can go First Class which is cheaper than Media in that case.
I have found that when clerks at the PO don't know me, they recite the entire litany of rates starting with the $25 one and working on down to Media !!
I wonder if they work on a commission!? LOL

Carolyn, I'm glad you put it up on Amazon. It may sell quickly or take a while...be patient! I have seen sales drop drastically in the past 2 years because of the economy.
If you price your book competitively with others listed in the same condition, you should sell in good time.
I may have misled you about the ease of starting with Amazon because , now that I recall, I already had an account with them for buying books....so they used all that info and selling was a snap.
I wish you good luck....It has been a VERY profitable hobby for me.
