I would love to find this book

This is a real longshot, but here goes. When I was a high school student, 1945-1949, I read a book for my Latin class. It was a novel about the Vestal Virgins in ancient Rome. The main character was accused of breaking the vow of chastity and had to pass a test in order to be exonerated, and not be walled up alive in a tomb and left to die. The test was that she had to carry water in a sieve for a certain distance withour losing a drop.

I have searched several out of print book sites to no avail. Is there anyone our there who ever heard of this plot? I would love to find the title of this book. The story of the life of these women of ancient Rome was fascinating to me.

I read it too, about twenty years later. I can't recall the title either, but if it comes to me, I'll let you know.

Actually, I think I just found it. Could it have been The Unwilling Vestal by Edward Lucas White? I've provided a link to the Project Gutenberg text. If that is the right book, you can read it again.

rosefolly, thank you so much. You found the book and thanks for the link. I have already ordered it from Amazon, I hope to get it by Wednesday. I'll read it again and then pass it on to my granddaughter. She has usually liked the books I have given her.
