Seventeeth Summer

Does anyone remember this teenage novel which I loved and read multiple times as a teenager myself? I had forgotten about it but I saw in today's paper that the author, Maureen Daly McGivern, just died. It turns out the book was written in 1942 (long before my own 17th summer!) and has never been out of print.

McGivern, who wrote under her maiden name, Maureen Daly, had quite a career as a writer and journalist, right up until recently. And her husband was also a writer and screenwriter. Her obituary is very interesting, if you remember this book or any of her others. Google has a number of them to read. She was born in Ireland but grew up in the midwest.

Ginny, I do remember Seventeenth Summer. While I don't necessarily remember the story, I do know that it was my very favorite book at the time I read it and I have thought about it since then, wondering what happened to my copy. Thanks for posting this -- now that I know it is still in print I need to buy and read it again.

When I was a teenager I never paid attention to when books were written. Another favorite book that I found in the school library was Janice Meredith. One day I searched for it on eBay (or Alibris) and, almost unbelievably, found a copy. When it arrived I discovered that it was written in 1899!

I absolutely loved SEVENTEENTH SUMMER. I first read it in 1946 when I was 15. It was and still is a sweet and touching love story. I found a paper back copy about twenty years ago and I have it on my book shelf. I have to admit that I re-read it just a couple of years ago and enjoyed every word. The story is just as relevant today as it was in 1942.

Follow up: I went to the library to get this book and read it again for the first time in many years. The librarian said we didn't have it so I made an interlibrary loan request. But as she read about the book, she said, "No, we'll buy it."

Then she said, "Gee, it's funny but many of the libraries in our consortium say they own it but it's missing from their shelves. That only happens to the most popular books." An amusing and somewhat sad factoid.

I read all the Amazon reader reviews of the book and people either loved it or felt cheated because--no, um, physical expression of the relationship. Interesting commentary on our times. Most of these were young readers.
