Which London bookshops would you recommend?

DH and I will be coming to visit friends and family in England at the end of this week. We will get a couple of days in London, and I was wondering whether any of you could recommend any really good bookshops that are quite easy to reach.

Which branch of Foyles is best? Any other shops that are just great?

And isn't there a crypt somewhere that has really good tea?

Thanks a bunch for any help.

Liz, you might enjoy Daunt's bookshop. It was started as mainly a travel/map shop but has branched out. If you are staying centrally there is a branch in Marylebone High St.
The crypt is under St Martin's in the Fields. If you check it out on google you can go to their 'menu' site. Handy too for the National Gallery and a bit of culture.

I remember Cindy went to that church once for a tea, and found a bunch of misericords. I was going to look for them when we went there...

DebbieOn , after collecting spidery varieties and UF's for years , I am only recently adding bagel varieties so am really interested to hear what others have to say about the bagel varieties that they grow . Wispy Rays and Black Falcon Ritual I think are both considered UF's but price has always been a big factor in my purchases and the price of them was higher than I could afford /was willing to pay at the time . The price is coming down so now I can consider purchasing these ones. I only ever paid big bucks for three daylilies . Two are still here but I cant say I am impressed with the plant performance of either of them . One is Reckamp/Klehms Angel's Smile and the other one is Genesta . The third is or should I say was Mapping Carolina . I absolutely loved the look of that daylily but it has gone the way of the dodo bird. It just withered away . So I have promised myself that I will never pay a high price for a daylily again . It is just too shocking to the pocketbook when a really expensive daylily dies or just barely hangs on . I can wait till the price for a plant is reasonable . The suggestion of Shores of Time and the fact that it does well is good to know ,I really appreciate that kind of info . I do grow Whatley's Butter Cream here and Solar Music is a yellow Whatley daylily that is similar. I love the look but I have not added it here ........yet. Assuming I can find it for a decent price in the future I would love to add it, as, if it does as well as Butter Cream has done here I would be very happy to include it in my gardens , I love the very flat face of Solar Music! For now I am happy with Butter Cream ...... a robust lovely yellow daylily although I like the height that Solar Musc is registered to be even better than the height of Butter Cream . I will have to do some research on Dena Marie's Sister but good to know it is a robust plant

3 inches on both sides is too much. it looks like oak w a stain . I would work w the install specs of your chosen unit and a trim carpenter to use a filler strip to shrink the gap. Have you measured your exact opening width. seems like they are wanting air apace more at the rear lately w models which means a 36 in unit which is really 35.5 or therabouts might be the best bet. i think id pass by the 33 in and go to that more common 36 in width .... go back and look at models in that range. there may be some reduced depth if you go the next width and that is alwsys a nice set up. ....take advantage of your avail width!!!

Thanks for the tips Jeff. I certainly plan to put them outdoors except for winters. I will try to let them have some sun. Considering I am in zone 7b and growing in containers, whether it is better outside or indoors for winter remains to be seen. I think some hit and trial will be required for optimal growth and getting flowers. I got the High Fragnace Japonica this fall and put it outdoors until late fall and it did nothing. Then I got it indoors and it has since put out a nice flush of growth already (it sits in a SE window at 65-70 and get supplemental light from LED grow lights. I guess the indoor warmth fooled it into thinking it's spring already. Considering these plants are small (quart and three-quart pot size) they really need as much growth as possible the next few years. Any flowers will obviously be a bonus.

Liz, probably sounding pedantic here but I don't think there are any misericords at St Martin's. You find them in the choir of Medieval cathedrals/churches, where monks or canons used to sing the offices and needed a little rear-end support during the long services.
St M's is an early eighteenth century building (1720's) and I throw in for free the fact that where Trafalgar Square is now laid out used to be a notorious slum that had developed on the site of the old Royal stables.

Liz, a bit of name dropping here. I once met Martin and former poster Anyanka for lunch at a big Waterstone's on Picadilly Street just a few blocks from Fortnum & Mason's. We had such a good time getting acquainted in real time, and the bookstore is great.

My favorite, however, was Murder Inc., a bookstore filled with mysteries, on Charing Cross Road. It just about broke my heart to learn that it has closed, but I think you can still order online from them.

Indeed. A nice lunchtime/afternoon, and not a bad lunch either.

If you go to St. Martin's in the Fields, you should walk up Charing Cross Road and at least look at the site of 84 Charing Cross Road. Marks & Co is long gone, but still...

And the original Foyles - the only one I'd consider visiting in London - is also in the Charing Cross Road, not far from there. It's also got quite a good cafe - or it did have, last time I was there in April.
