Thanks for the link, paigect, I missed the performance and figured I'd have to wait until the DVD came out. I forgot about how everything shows up on YouTube. I'm a long-time admirer of Pete Seeger too, and have been a member of the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater organization for years. The member sails were a great experience (no, Pete Seeger wasn't on the boat and I never met him). Did you know that there's a movement to nominate Pete Seeger for a Nobel Peace Prize? Sounds good to me. sooey: I'm afraid I did more shoveling than dancing yesterday. Speaking about the speed of the internet, I read yesterday about how Obama used a shaka hand sign to acknowledge his high school band. I'd never heard of this, so of course I googled it. The Wikipedia entry for "Shaka sign" had already been updated to include Obama's use of it. I just checked again, and it now includes a photo as well (see the footnote). Claire

A little OT... but still on "musical poetry", I guess. Shel Silverstein... famous for writing a lot of poems gear toward younger kids... those "Sidewalk" books. WELL, you're never too old to learn. As a teacher aid, helping a special needs student in his English class, discover that the lyrics to Johnny Cash' "A Boy Named Sue" and Dr. Hook's "Cover of the Rolling Stone" are BOTH from him!?!

I disagree with Martin. My take on Dylan's work is very personal. Frieda wrote "song lyrics can be poetry." I concur with this. A poet is often one who captures the zeitgeist of a culture, of an age. Dylan is my generation and spoke for me and for so many others against injustices in American society. Out of this counterculture movement (of which Dylan was the eloquent spokesperson) flourished the woman's movement, the Civil Rights movement, and protests against a wasteful and senseless war in VietNam. I worked in the Civil Rights Movement in the south, had male friends who were fleeing to Canada to avoid the draft, lived within one hour of the Kent State shootings, and recall vividly the Kennedy-Kruschev confrontation in Cuba. I am an unashamed child of the Sixties. America is still dealing with the aftermath of the VietNam war re veterans and PTSD. How much of Dylan's lyrics have you listened closely to? "Master of War"? "Oxford Town."? "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall"? Do you know what events these lyrics refer to? Dylan spoke out in his youth brilliantly and courageously for peace, in an age of great turmoil in my country.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge Exclusively of the abstract sciences, the largest and worthiest portion of our knowledge consists of aphorisms: and the greatest and best of men is but an aphorism. Samuel Taylor Coleridge Swans sing before they die - 'twere no bad thing should certain persons die before they sing.
