new: april fotess swap - what was i thinking?
Comments (150)Starting to feel a little overwhelmed. I have a shower for my daughter coming up May 6th and then the wedding 5 weeks later. My daughter who is away at college is suffering from an impacted tooth and is scheduled to have her wisdom teeth removed next Thursday. This will be where she is going to school which is 2 hours from here. I should be there with her but I can't get the day off at our little gift shop. Not enough people for coverage and it is a plant delivery day. My son is having some enemia issues and is 18. Now he needs an MRI on some lower abdominal swelling and then will have to see a GI doctor. My second son (have 5 kids) just got a job in Dallas, Texas and he and his wife will be moving there as soon as there house sells in South Carolina. The darn wet and cold weather isn't helping either. I have a plant swap I have to get done. The old "when it rains, it pours". I have enjoyed this swap immensely. Thank you Shirley for such a great time. Loved this idea and hope we do it again sometime. Margo...See MoreLets Introduce Ourselves Part II
Comments (116)Have been pretty much a lurker for years, posted occasionally and found this site via GardenWeb. I'm finishing up my MLIS (Masters in Library Science) and work full time at a hospital as a medical librarian. Before that, I ran the transcription department in that same hospital just short of 10 years. I live in San Pedro California, a sweet little town on the coast of SoCal, not too far from Long Beach and south of L.A. School has reigned in my "fun reading" but now I can begin to relax and have at it! I love mysteries and just finished the Deborah Crombie series. I also like Peter Robinson. In fiction I just love Rumer Godden; I re-read her wonderful books periodically. Amy Tan is another wonderful author. Barbara Kingsolver (SP?) and Ken Follett too are wonderful. There are many others, but I can't think of them all! Many new and wonderful books I get from this website - someone is always reading something that interests me! My husband of 34.5 years is a retired CIO. His passion is aviation and WWII. He builds large scale model RC planes. Seriously, these things are BIG! We have two very spoiled (indoor) cats. Now that my academic endeavors are almost behind me, I plan to tackle my neglected garden, my (long) lists of TBR books I've been making - for years now - and assorted needlework projects, i.e. knitting, cross stitch, crocheting. Not necessarily in that order!...See MoreBob Dylan wins a Nobel Prize.
Comments (25)A little OT... but still on "musical poetry", I guess. Shel Silverstein... famous for writing a lot of poems gear toward younger kids... those "Sidewalk" books. WELL, you're never too old to learn. As a teacher aid, helping a special needs student in his English class, discover that the lyrics to Johnny Cash' "A Boy Named Sue" and Dr. Hook's "Cover of the Rolling Stone" are BOTH from him!?!...See MoreBooker Prize 2017 - Long List out today!
Comments (41)So - shortlist prediction time! The shortlist comes out on Wednesday; I have read (or tried to read) ten of the thirteen. That's enough to make a stab at it. And I reckon that this is the best longlist I've seen for several years. 4 3 2 1 by Paul Auster - I'd be surprised and upset if it wasn't shortlisted Days Without End by Sebastian Barry - didn't finish it, but I think it'll be shortlisted. History of Wolves by Emily Fridlund - I enojoyed it, but I don't think so. Exit West by Mohsin Hamid - I'm going to try to read this before Wednesday - I'll let you know. Solar Bones by Mike McCormack - I don't think so, but I'd be delighted if it were. Reservoir 13 by Jon McGregor - I don't think so, but I wouldn't object Elmet by Fiona Mozley - not read yet. The Ministry Of Utmost Happiness by Arundhati Roy - not read yet Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders - interesting. I didn't really like it, but it might be shortlisted. Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie - abandoned - didn't like it. Autumn by Ali Smith - liked it - it might be shortlisted Swing Time by Zadie Smith - abandoned - didn't like it. But it'l probably be shortlisted. The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead - overhyped, in my opinion, but will probably be shortisted. So - I suspect the shortlist will be 4-3-2-1, Days Without End, Ministry of Utmost Happiness (just because it's her first since The God of Small Things, which won the Booker), Underground Railroad, Lincoln in the Bardo and Swing Time. The shortlist I'd like to see, based on the ones I've read, would be 4-3-2-1, Solar Bones, Reservoir 13, Autumn, Days Without End and either History of Wolves or Exit West, if I like it. So, on to Exit West....See Morekathy_t
