I had nothing to trade so I ordered the book online :) Sounded like a good book and has been republished many times over the years. Seems to have been published first around 1934 as near as I've been able to determine though the 1934 edition did not say it was a 1st ed. Do you happen you know when yours was published? Is it a first edition?

Thanks everyone. We have already been planning to leave the hookups, Sierraeast, and had to fight the health department so they wouldn't make us destroy the septic system, which works fine. Watching the demo was fun... What is it about destroying things that seems to bring out the excited kid in everyone? The guys were so late the first day that my husband let the kids take the Bobcat and ram into the thing...They punched big holes in it and knocked it off some of the blocks. I had to stop them before they pushed it into the carport behind. But even the crew, who does this for a living, got all excited when the destruction started. The kids looked forward to that day for months. It was so sad that they actually got started at about exactly the time our 10 and almost 14 yo ds's had to go to baseball practice! One of our dd's took LONG videos for them, though. I always have to include that we were blessed to have it to live in, and we have special memories of our time living so close together. But it was past its prime and I don't think we'll miss it now.

Arthur Waley's translation of The Tale of Genji is beautiful--a work of fine English literature in its own right, and I have always preferred it. Still have the first copy I bought. Japanese Inn takes you through a long period in the history of an inn along the ancient main highway, a little bit like what Michener did with many locales in the U.S. Even my mother loved it. Tuttle published this book and many others. There are many translations of Japanese literature now. As a cat lover, I have always loved I Am a Cat by Natsume Soseki, one of the most famous Japanese novelists. It is a somewhat satirical book supposedly written by a stray cat taken in by a school teacher and was originally published serially in a newspaper. Others of Soseki's books tend to be rather too grim for my taste, but you might be interested in them. I think The Makioka Sisters is interesting for its picture of the young women in a family earlier in the last century. This is by Junichiro Tanizaki. My favorite modern Japanese writer, Morio Kita, has a very humorous style and I have enjoyed everything I have read of his. The House of Nire, and maybe others by him, are available in English translation.
