The last message on the old thread posted was this question from Timallan:

Is 1970 still free? I am curious to read the novel Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion.

I'll take 1979, with Octavia Butler's Kindred. I plan to pick it up from the library today.

and I'll add the link to Lemonhead's blog over on this thread too:

I had been planning to read something by Thomas Costain, a very popular writer of the 1940's and 1950's, but the slots are all full.

Meanwhile I noticed that our library system has only one of his novels, The Black Rose, along with some of his nonfiction. I checked it out so it would not get discarded next time they weed the shelves.

I wish I had Easy Going, it looks like a beauty, but my yellow has no peach, amber or pink veining or undertones. It's egg-yolk yellow and simply pales to lemon-cream with age. My main regret is that it blows too quickly to a very open, unattractive form. This describes my 'Easy Going'. Actually "the light green shiny foliage" comment makes me lean towards EG, also the growth habit of your standard. Livin Easy, Easy Going, and the offspring Hot Cocoa have very distinctive foliage, prickles, canes, and growth habit. What makes ID trickier in your case that you are in Europe, where there are cultivars we don't have here. Easy Going and Livin Easy are very popular as standards here--whether or not that is true in France, I have no idea. Usually though standard roses, which are much more expensive than the regular ones, are less apt to be an obscure variety because of the extra expense. So look at very common cultivars. Have you looked at Sunsprite and Sunflare? Might also be one of those. Easy Going foliage:

i agree with you conceptually about only investing in thing you believe in, or rather in things you can stomach as most investments and industries have a downside if you look hard enough. eventually you get to exploited workers and poisoned rivers and solid waste. i personally struggled with the payday investment i made. the return was high, but i did not want to be associated with it. i said no for about 6 months. over that six months i learned how they (where my money is now) did business. after i understood it i had a hard time thinking of it any differently than a bank. they both loan money based on ones ability to earn money and pay it back. the only difference is the duration and the size of the loan. a bank allows me to spend money i don't have on a credit card and then charges me 13-18% until i pay them back while they themselves are leveraged 10 to 1 on those dollars loaned. the payday place will only loan me money that will be covered in my NEXT paycheck and charge me a flat fee of $5 or $10 while they themselves have a dollar for every dollar they loan out. when i look at it like that i really had no problem with the payday place, but started to have them with the banks. the payday places are not dragging the economy down because of their recklessness. they are also not enslaving an entire generation by offering them credit they cannot pay back. there are people who use them recklessly, and it is real easy to point them out because they are the fringe. it is a little harder to point out the middle class suburbanite who is a slave to their credit card and bank because they get up and go to work each day and keep a nice yard but are living on credit. both industries lend money and both are technically guilty of charging people who don't have money. they are in business to make money, not give it away. in the end neither is good nor bad just as fire is neither good nor bad. the good or bad all depends on who uses it and how they use it. the payday places service a far less afluent and unsophisticated clientele and therefore gives them very little wiggle room to abuse the system. if they want to stay one paycheck behind for the rest of their lives, that is about all they can do. the bank will let me get decades behind because they assume i am responsible and won't let it come to that but do little to stop me and recently have even encouraged me to do so. in my mind it is a match compared to the bonfire. both can be abused, but the potential abuse of a credit card is far greater. but there may be other payday places that have different policies than where i invested. mind you i don't have equity in the payday place"they borrowed money from me to lend. in short my money is on deposit to be lent out just as if i put it in a savings account for the bank to lend out on a credit card loan. the main difference is my rate of return is almost 10 times higher but not FDIC insured. the only thing i do struggle with is the 10% they charge for cashing checks. this is outrageous in my opinion. i can't understand why anybody would do that unless they were unable to cash it elsewhere and i won't speculate as to why. but in the end they have their reason and are paying a premium for it. and with that i leave it. cigarettes are another issue and i am totally with you. i feel the same way about other products as well most are not as overtly damaging, but their products do carry liability and they push them with abandon to those who are hurt by them. not just talking guns and alcohol. a few minutes watching saturday morning cartoons was an eyeopener to the type of products marketed to kids. slap a mcdonald's logo on a bucket of mud and i think my kids would want to eat it. a friend of mine who is militant about his hate for phillip-morris and smoking in general (i think he lost a parent to lung cancer) holds half his portfolio in tobacco stocks. he justification was that it "those people" are going to annoy him with their smoke and take his taxes in healthcare, they are going to pay him for it. an interesting take on moral investing practices, but for him it makes sense. i respect your desire to not follow my practice of investing in payday lending. we not only have to undderstand our investments, but repect if not love them. i do not love payday lending, and to be honest would rather be elsewhere, but for the time being it is a good place and i am no so morally apposed to money lending as to not take the opportunity. i do however own no bank stocks for obvious reasons, i think their model is risky. i also think they are on the more unethical side of business. they have laws and loopholes that allow them to do things that are illegal to any other company. id it because we need their services and that is what it takes, or is it because they have power to influence if not make laws that favor them? i think recent events have shown us it is a little of both. before i sound too anti-establishment, let me say i think financial institutions are important and necessary"ie. banks, insurance companies, the US government, the FED, and even payday lenders. BUT they are in busniness to make themselves rich, not us. if you do not understand what they are doing, how they make money, or worse, what you are doing, they will take advantage of you. thus education. it is through education that you can see the smoke and mirrors they use to make you feel good about making them rich at your expense. one of the most ubiquitous is the home mortgage. i am emphatic that the most expensive ways to buy a house are in this order; cash, paid off early mortgage, continually refinanced mortgage, a 15-year note, a 30-year note, ARM, variable rate, interest only, and deferred interest-AKA sub-prime being the cheapest. that said, i don't like differed interest as it assumes the risk in the real estate market and if used by the uneducated or irresponsible it can (and has) blown up in the borrowers face. what does the bank want you to do? they love you to take out a 30 year and refinance every few years or pay it off early. if you are going to take it to term, they prefer you take out a 15-year because it makes them more money and that is why they have a cheaper rate to take it"they need to give you incentive to do what benefits them and think you are getting the better end of the deal"if it makes them more money, how can it also save you money and show up in two places at once? this all sounds like hericy i know. but where do we get our financial education from? our bank? alan greenspan has a nice quote about the variable interest only mortgage being the best deal out there if people only knew how to use it and the 30 year not serving its customers as the think. i will see if i can find it. the mortgage subject was perhaps the most eye-opening and influential education i ever had in finance. it is the lesson that taught me to see the whole equation and not look at a financial strategy in a vacuum. it taught me to understand finance on a macro economic level to understand how to best use products on a micro economic level. it is painful and feels like you brain is removed and turned around and put back in. but i assure you it is all true and useful information, but it requires the user to be responsible for their financial life and some are not willing to do this and for them it is not wise to have control. just as fire in the hands a of one is destructive and to another the opposite. what i am talking about is basic business finance"in short figuring out the lost opportunity cost and the taking the greatest margin. if done properly with understanding risk is minimized and growth is maximized. some will refuse to believe, but that does not prove those strategies wrong. i myself do not practice whole-heartedly all the strategies i know an believe because of issues regarding timing, my own laziness or whatever. this does not mean i don't acknowledge their strengths or potential. but it serves me to understand alternatives. there are many i have encountered on this forum and in other places who flat out throw up a wall and won't even try to understand that there are several strategies to use in every situation and they all have merits. my beef is with those who claim merits that are not truly there or ignore others. those who emotionally attach themselves to dogma that was sold to them without trying to understand. i have been guilty of this and still am at times and it only hurts myself. when i have a few hours to spend with a calculator, i will start a new thread and actually run the numbers on the most popular mortgage products side-by-side including paying cash. i will treat all as equals. it is amazing how different the outcome is from popular beliefs, but if you look at who is selling the mortgages and the information i guess it is not shocking. it won't prove anything other than which is the most expensive in terms of money and what risks are inherent in each scenario. the individual would have to choose which is best for them. the problem is that most choose the wrong thing for what they claim to want. if you know how they each work you can choose more appropriately for your goals whatever they may be.

Great topic, VictoriaElizabeth. I picked up Lucy Worsley's "If Walls Could Talk: An Intimate History of the Home" at the library yesterday and can't put it down! It is a history of the kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom from Medieval to contemporary times: how people thought of these rooms, what they did in them, how they furnished them, and the technological changes that occurred over time to transform them. It is focused on England but relevant to the U.S. A fun read! On another note, I've been searching for a book on American FourSquare houses since I am renovating one. Does anyone have a source? Preferably illustrated!!

Finally, we have pictures! Photo taken before the apartment was fixed and painted. Window is much taller, hidden here by a blind. Faces north. Dresser. It's twin will go in the wall-to-wall closet on the opposite side of the window wall. Wall light. Three of these will be wired together to replace a large, ugly square wall scone. Heirloom bedside table. Small area rug. The background is barely yellow. Blue clouds painting (above bed?) Proposed bedroom layout. Missisng is a photo of the armoire. It's old, plain and of the same medium brown as the dresser. Shelves above the bedside table. A wall of shelves (or three bookcases) on wall opposite bed (I've got over 1,000 books; they have to go wherever there's space). Top shelf will hold my collection of antique Paddington Bears. What looks like a box under the window is a short storage bench; it will have a cushion top and a hole on the side for my shy cat to hide in. It's white. Still need bed linen ... and colour for walls!

Done with my Hallowe'en reading, so I have just started Play It as It Lays by Joan Didion for the year 1970.

If 1965 is still free, I might like to attempt The Sterile Cuckoo by John Nichols. I remember the very offbeat movie with Liza Minnelli.

I think 1972 is still open. I'll take that slot and write of Milan Kundera's little-known novel, "Farewell Waltz". This was first published in France under a slightly different title. The author is a bit of a philosopher and in the book raises interesting questions about morality, guilt, the effects of Communism, and relationships between men and women. The setting is in a small spa town in Bohemia, with only 8 protagonists. It is clear from views expressed by Kundera that he found the Communist regime repressive. He relocated to France after the Prague Spring.

Kundera's skill in depicting complex characters is as great as his formation of unexpected plot twists. I really enjoyed this.

Ill do 1997. I googled best books of 1997 and this is the top of the list:

The Blue Flower by Penelope Fitzgerald
The Blue Flower 3.45 of 5 stars 3.45 ÷ rating details ÷ 1,397 ratings ÷ 233 reviews
In eighteenth-century Germany, the impetuous student of philosophy who will later gain fame as the Romantic poet Novalis seeks his father's permission to wed his true philosophy -- a plain, simple child named Sophie. The attachment shocks his family and friends. This brilliant young man, betrothed to a twelve-year-old dullard! How can it be?

It sounds appalling to me but maybe Ill be pleasantly surprised...had to order it from another library so it will be a few days before it is here.

Peace has been restored in the blog of RP Century of Books. All changes have been completed and implemented.

New books are highlighted (as per people's choices).

You may note that in the 1900-1925 table, there are two titles in red. I hadn't noticed before, but these are two titles by the same author, and if we want to be pedantic, we had agreed that one of the rules was no repeats.

So - I went back and checked the old posts, and it seems that Rouan posted with her title choice first (on June 13) whilst FrancesMD posted her title on July 03.

How would we like to handle this? (The "We" was a Queen Victorian touch for you.) Keep both? Do chronological?

Thanks. And if there need to be some revisions etc. on the blog, just let me know. Happy to make those.

Oh I meant to apologize for the Blue Flower confusion dates. It was published in the US in 1997, so that is the date I first saw when I googled it. Subsequently, I found that it was originally published in the UK in 1995. Not sure if it matters if you choose 1995 or 1997.
I will volunteer for The Dead Zone by Stephen King published in 1979. I haven't read a King novel in a long time. I wonder whatever happened to Rayna (I think that was her name, she was a real King fan).

So the RP Century of Books blog has been updated... (see link below.)

Here are where there are gaps if anyone's up for any new reading:

* 1920's - 1923, 1926
* 1930's - 1930, 1931, 1934, 1935
* 1940's - COMPLETE
* 1950's - COMPLETE
* 1960's - 1960, 1967
* 1970's - COMPLETE
* 1980's - 1987, 1988, 1989
* 1990's - 1993, 1999

I need to add Donnamira's Kindred read (1979), but otherwise I think it's up to date. Feel free to let me know if there are edits or revisions.

Just 18 more titles if we'd like to complete this project!

I feel so guilty; I haven't kept up with this. I have the Agony and the Ecstasy on my TBR pile. I signed up for it for 1961 but it keeps staring at me and I keep ignoring it. I did try to read it once but it didn't catch my attention so I put it back on the TBR pile. I think I had better give up that year in case someone else has something they want to read for it. I am so sorry but I just don't want to read it right now.

rouan, I too remember I tried to read The Agony and the Ecstasy and couldn't get on with it. In fact I have found anything by Irving Stone, except for weight to be long on 'guide-book' type descriptions and very short on feeling/empathy/emotions.

Rouan --

Absolutely no problem with you retiring a book title bc you don't want to read it. I smiled when you said you had been feeling guilty about not reading it, bc I have that same reaction sometimes. (I know, I know...)

But rest assured - there is no pressure on this end, and if you don't want to, that's fine. Thanks for letting us know.

So - having a spare moment, I thought I'd fiddle around and update the RP CoB blog.

New additions (or perhaps "in progress") are the highlighted entries.

I'm going to see if I can compile a list of books as suggestions to fill in the remaining gaps. Perhaps we could complete this project by the end of summer? (Just an idle thought and only if it's fun for everyone.)

Please feel free to let me know if there need to be edits.

Happy to do so.

Thanks.

Friends, I am releasing 1937 back into the ranks of the unread.

I have tried and tried to read Northwest Passage but my brain shuts down every time I pick it up. I don't know why. It's not an intellectually challenging work. Now I am officially giving up.

Sorry to have let the group down. Perhaps I can find a substitute for that or one of the other still unfilled years.

Tim: Sure, you can take 1989 with Ishiguro.

Rose: Sure, you can release 1937. No pressure from this camp at all. :-)

And to summarize, this is what is still available. I've added a link below to some novels that might give you guys an idea of what was published when if you're interested. 1900âÂÂs: 1906, 1914, 1916, 1919
1920âÂÂs: 1923, 1926
1930âÂÂs: 1931, 1934, 1935, 1937
1960âÂÂs: 1960, 1961, 1967
1980âÂÂs: 1987, 1988
1990âÂÂs: 1993, 1999

Any takers?

I've been reading, but for some reason, the titles I've chosen have been published in years already taken. I'm going to have to start looking at pub dates as well as titles.

Thanks, all!

Hi everyone -

Just a note to say that the blog has been updated. We're making good progress...

Salient points:

* 1900's - missing 1906
* 1910's - missing 1916, 1919
* 1920's - missing 1926
* 1930's - missing 1931, 1935
* 1940's - COMPLETE
* 1950's - COMPLETE
* 1960's - COMPLETE
* 1970's - COMPLETE
* 1980's - missing 1982, 1987, 1988
* 1990's - missing 1993, 1999

So, list-wise, we are missing eleven books from the years 1906, 1916, 1919, 1926, 1931, 1935, 1982, 1987, 1988, 1993, and 1999.

Any additions floating around that I've missed?

Thanks.

Can we add the New York Trilogy by Paul Auster for 1987? And here's one for 1988: Breathing Lessons by Anne Tyler.

Kathy, I think the original idea was that these should be new reads for us, rather than re-reads, though I don't think you will be thrown into the duckpond by lemonhead/liz for cheating a bit. If you have, as yet, not read Breathing Lessons ask to have it put in the 1988 slot. I happened to be browsing old threads and came across this one, when we were doing the Century of Books. Curious which years to fill (and which ones that I could fill in with my own reading titles), I found out that we at RP are only actually missing titles published in the following years:

* 1906

* 1916

* 1993

* 1999

Would of you be interested and/or have any titles in your recent reading list that would fill in any of those years?

(Just a random thought. It'd be fun to complete this project... )
