I recently read this book and would love to discuss the ending with anyone else who has read it. I really enjoyed the setting and characters, plus the plot intrigued me.

Plumbing is simple, here are the basic precepts: 1.) cold is on the right, hot is one the left. 2.) -hit doesn't flow uphill. 3.) payday is on Friday. I'm enjoying "The Great Mortality" and there has been recent discussion of medieval santitary provisions, or rather lack thereof. Hooray for Mary! (the operator's manuals for commercials sewing machines are often similar to that which you received with the sink... they can provide hours of humorous reading since they're pretty thick). And I'm quite sure our own little "survivor", Sue, is just tickled pink to wash out her flannel Union Suit and be done with the no heat phase. Praise be good friends! That's great news and I sure hope you realize improved comfort and savings in the coming season. I would like to see Phoebles and Clousseau cooking up some mischief together, too. I suspect no counter would be high enough with the two of them in the same room, lol. Mary, do you make the absolutely sinful Christmas Pudding made with suet and steamed and served with hard sauce? Mum used to make that and I've not had it in years but it's so delicious (a cardiologist's dream/nightmare). The mould is quite old, belonged to my grandmother and quite possibly her mother, too... should look for it on the next trip to THTTF. Eden, you and I share the same appreciation of just what a can of paint and some elbow grease can do. :) I smiled when you said you shopped for new stools and then decided to spiff the old ones up. We have that in common, too. If you lived down the road we could trade furniture when we tired of what was in our houses, lol. 'bug, the hearth is raised from the floor using 2x10s, 2x4s, and a layer of 3/4" plywood atop that to provide lateral stability. There is also a layer of 1/2" cement board on top of the plywood (non-combustible). Atop the cement board there will be mortar and tiles (non-combustible). The skimcoated chimney is inside the room and that is non-combustible. The stove will be positioned just over 36" from the walls and trimwork around the windows. This meets and exceeds the code requirements our town uses (they are very strict), requirements vary somewhat with the sort of fuel a "stove" uses, propane, pellets, corn, etc.. Additionally, the stove is outfitted with a metal heatshield on the bottom of it. When in operation the tiles below the stove remain cool to the touch. Interestingly, the company offers a complete line of heat shields for sides, back, and stove pipes to assist in more challenging installations. Our insurance company has been great; we've provided them with all the specifications of the stove, the hearth, and a copy of the signed inspection. OK, gotta run and deal with those miserable restaurant benches. I managed to get a splinter of the plywood in the pad of my right thumb yesterday. It began to fester and became quite sore. I increased the discomfort by picking away at it with a pin, but I THINK I got it (tiny!). But "Thumbkin" is still annoyingly tender. Make it a productive day, you guys.

Can You Recommend a Good Book?
Q
Comments (25)
I just read Gone Girl, I think I picked it up from a recommendation here. It was good, I really liked it. Lots of twists and unexpected turns. I even paid the rental book fee instead of waiting on the list. It's $3 for a 21 day rental. I figure the library needs the money so I splurged. I usually just wait on the list but I couldn't find anything else I wanted and the title jumped out at me. It was definitely worth $3 to read it. My library just put a kiosk, like a vending machine, in at my community center. It has movies, kids book, and adult books. I can take out a book, from the vending machine, while I'm at the gym. How cool is that? The kiosk books are free, the rentals are extra copies of the extremely popular titles and are kept in the main branch. I imagine it's a nice little money maker for them. I did make a note of a few new books from this thread. Thanks.

September Reading
Q
Comments (104)
On Saturday I went to the public library booksale, and got 7 books, $1 apiece, among them: The Echo Maker by Richard Powers, An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor and The New Yorkers by Cathleen Schine. Cece, Did you finish The September Society? Did you like it? I read recently the first book by this author, A Beautiful Blue Death, and liked it. Lemonhead, I read Moon Tiger years ago. I didn't like it. I'd be interested in hearing how you feel about it. Kren, They did a movie of The French Lieutenant's Woman years ago, with Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons. I haven't read the book, but the movie was pretty good. Kath, I'm with Vee, you have to tell us about your trip when you reach to your final destination. It would be interesting if you add which books you read in each leg of the trip.

BEN MOORE WHITE- CHANTILLY LACE, SIMPLY WHITE or COTTON BALLS
Q

I may be replying to an old post...having a white dilemma! Moving to a new home soon, and I need to choose a white for the painter soon! I used BM Cotton Balls in my current home in 2 bedrooms, one is north facing and the other is south facing. worked well...nice and bright but not stark, however the hallway to the rooms look beige, which I am not fond of. New home has both north and south exposures + a hallway without a lot of light. Considering Simply White. Second question...the baseboards are lovely and very high, I would like them to remain a feature, which white to choose for trim? Your comments are appreciated!!!

And I ordered it because you liked it. I had passed it by a couple of times, but I usually like the books that you like, so. I did something I never do...took advantage of a book club offer, wound up with 7 books for about $18, and need to buy just one more in a year.

I'd like to read this at some point, too, it's just way down on the list right now.

I found this at Half Price Books but haven't managed to read it yet. Sounds like a lot of others are in the same boat. Be patient Sarah, it looks like they'll be a pretty good discussion going eventually. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it.

Yay! I'm so glad others of you are interested in reading this book. I'll be patient, and hope that we draw in a few more readers eventually.

Vernoicae-I'm glad to hear that we often like the same books. What are some authors or titles that we both liked, if you can remember any?

I read this because the librarian at our little local library said she thought I'd like it. While it was quite well-written, I found the ending and wrap up of the plot totally un-convincing. I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone.

laceyvail - I'm curious about what you found unconvincing about the ending.

SPOILER ALERT

Was it how the relationship with the policeman ended up or because of the outcome of her mental issues? Just curious.

I was actually a little confused by the ending. I got the real relationship between her and Mae, but some of the rest of what had happened in her past was a bit fuzzy. That's why I wanted to discuss it with others.

Sarah Canary,

I was a bit confused by the ending too. I read it a while ago and am a bit fuzzy about some of the details, so was reluctant to jump in to discuss it.

rouan - I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused. Here's what I think happened:

SPOILER SPOILER
As I read back over it, I think I understand it now. Lyndley and Towner are one and the same. The real Lyndley (Towner's twin) died at birth. But Towner was living a split personality or something.
What I wasn't sure about was the jump off the cliff. Did Towner think she saw it, or was she the one who jumped off the cliff? I'm guessing she jumped. What do you think?

Sarah canary,

I think Towner is the one who jumped off the cliff. There was a comment made by her former boyfriend (I forget his name) about saving her life that I think gives credence to that idea. He was the one she was out on the boat with the day that incident happened.

laceyvail, good to see you posting here again. We seem to share the same tastes in reading.(e.g. "Kristin Lavansdottir." I wonder if you would care to join our upcoming discusion on "Angle of Repose" by W. Stegner? It is also a family saga. I think there are similarities in both works.

I picked up this book at our local library and read some of the forward and blurb, etc. and wondered it I would find it a conundrum or tedious. So I put it back....

Hi woodnymph. I've been off the forum due to a combination of seasonal gardening chores and computer problems, especially with Garden Web. thanks for the invitation to discuss "Angle of Repose," which I think I may have read many years ago, but in the next few weeks I'll be gone much of the time on family obligations. I'll follow the discussion as I can, and if I remember anything from my long-ago read, I'll jump in.

SPOILER AHEAD

I found the preparation in The Lace Reader for the ending unconvincing. And by the time it all came out, I had lost conviction of the characters and the resultant plot. It was too convoluted.
