And I ordered it because you liked it. I had passed it by a couple of times, but I usually like the books that you like, so. I did something I never do...took advantage of a book club offer, wound up with 7 books for about $18, and need to buy just one more in a year.

I'd like to read this at some point, too, it's just way down on the list right now.

I found this at Half Price Books but haven't managed to read it yet. Sounds like a lot of others are in the same boat. Be patient Sarah, it looks like they'll be a pretty good discussion going eventually. I'm happy to hear you enjoyed it.

Vernoicae-I'm glad to hear that we often like the same books. What are some authors or titles that we both liked, if you can remember any?

I read this because the librarian at our little local library said she thought I'd like it. While it was quite well-written, I found the ending and wrap up of the plot totally un-convincing. I don't think I'd recommend it to anyone.

laceyvail - I'm curious about what you found unconvincing about the ending.

Was it how the relationship with the policeman ended up or because of the outcome of her mental issues? Just curious.

I was actually a little confused by the ending. I got the real relationship between her and Mae, but some of the rest of what had happened in her past was a bit fuzzy. That's why I wanted to discuss it with others.

I was a bit confused by the ending too. I read it a while ago and am a bit fuzzy about some of the details, so was reluctant to jump in to discuss it.

rouan - I'm glad I'm not the only one who was confused. Here's what I think happened:

As I read back over it, I think I understand it now. Lyndley and Towner are one and the same. The real Lyndley (Towner's twin) died at birth. But Towner was living a split personality or something.
What I wasn't sure about was the jump off the cliff. Did Towner think she saw it, or was she the one who jumped off the cliff? I'm guessing she jumped. What do you think?

I think Towner is the one who jumped off the cliff. There was a comment made by her former boyfriend (I forget his name) about saving her life that I think gives credence to that idea. He was the one she was out on the boat with the day that incident happened.

laceyvail, good to see you posting here again. We seem to share the same tastes in reading.(e.g. "Kristin Lavansdottir." I wonder if you would care to join our upcoming discusion on "Angle of Repose" by W. Stegner? It is also a family saga. I think there are similarities in both works.

I picked up this book at our local library and read some of the forward and blurb, etc. and wondered it I would find it a conundrum or tedious. So I put it back....

I'll follow the discussion as I can, and if I remember anything from my long-ago read, I'll jump in.

I found the preparation in The Lace Reader for the ending unconvincing. And by the time it all came out, I had lost conviction of the characters and the resultant plot. It was too convoluted.
