Well, I could add fourteen more to make it an even hundred.

Thanks, Cindy, I enjoyed looking at the list. I lost count of how many I've read, and there are even a few I haven't.
I did a double take at Rings of Saturn by Sebald. The explanation for its inclusion is a good one though, I think.

Happy Birthday Lance! Facebook is a great social networking tool. I connected with acquaintances, family and friends with whom I had little to no communication for a decade or more. I befriended several members on the Gardenweb Rose forums (after meeting them in person at the Heritage Roses Northwest event). MySpace is so yesterday! LOL! Facebook's default profile setting does not incorporate in-depth safety features to ward off pesky apps, spying on your footprints, insipid requests, etc.. You can get rid of these unwanted irritants by blocking and disabling various Facebook features without compromising on your user experience with networking. You can modify Facebook's default settings on your profile using the Settings option which is located on the right hand on the navigation bar at the top of the page (see the image below): Here's a useful article,10 Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know which provides a wealth of information on protecting the privacy of your account on Facebook. It takes a bit of time to set iron-clad (or so we hope) safety features on Facebook that best suit your needs. It is worth the investment for your peace of mind. Do make sure to go back to your Settings options every few months to see if any additional safety features have been added. Hmm...this became a longer post than I intended. Ah well...I call it an "occupational disease"...my technical writing background. :) Do we have a Facebook group for Gardenweb Roses folks?

Broadview Gardens at Hadlow in Kent (SE of London) has the national collection of hellebores so would be well worth a visit. It is open under the National Gardens Scheme (www.ngs.org.uk)on 21 February. The NGS site will also list other winter gardens so should be a useful starting point. Many famous gardens (such as Sissinghurst) close during the winter months, so do ensure that you check opening times. The Royal Horticultural Society's garden (www.rhs.org.uk) at Wisley is open all year round and has many extensive plant collections and a good nursery too. Beth Chatto's Garden is also highly recommended and is open throughout the year (http://www.bethchatto.co.uk/gardens.html) Enjoy planning your holiday! Travel books - how long to keep?

I figure, of all the clutter in my life, books are the least of my worries. They usually look tidy and don't take up much space. YMMV. I buy new copies of the generic guidebooks whenever I make a major trip, and only keep the latest if I have multiples. They're a good start to the obsessive planning of the next trip - "oh, I wanted to see this museum but it was closed for renovation," or, "I wonder if this restaurant is still there". I lend them out freely to friends without worrying about getting them back. On the other hand, I'll keep older books that have something interesting to them - The Jane Austen Guide to Bath, for example, or Literary Walks in Rome. The last time I got ruthless about a travel book, I was on the ferry to Corsica for a 3-week hiking trip. As I was tearing out the section on Corsica from the *huge* general Italy book and throwing the rest away, an Italian gentleman looked at me, horrified. "Americans, so wasteful!" Sigh...

Air Travel Booking Dilemma

I think I will do the 'fake' booking. I'd only be out the $150 pp ticket change fee. I may face a higher fare in April, but that would be the case anyway. Today fares went up $200 AS I WAS SEARCHING online. (Now you see it; now it's 'not available'; now it's $200 more!) I've read that best fares are posted after 3 p.m EST on Tuesdays and removed by midnight Wednesday. I can wait another day to search. I think this is a stupid way to run an airline. It must create fake bookings and more changes. They should let you book a one-way and modify it when the returns are open to be booked. You can do that if you're using miles to pay for the seat; mileage required is a flat amount whether you book one one-way or two one-way fares or a roundtrip.

I have only read nine of these books and I am reading the tenth, and about 20 are on my TBR list. Some of the rest I have never heard of. I will definitely be checking out the rest.

I've read quite a number, and am thrilled with the number I haven't read. Thank goodness for bookfinder.com! Also gives me an excuse to peruse used bookstores when I am traveling (like I really need an excuse)

BTW one of the first on the list by Eric Hansen was one of my top 10 the year I read it.

This is a fantastic list, IMO. I have read many of the authors mentioned: e.g. Bowles, Twain, Durrell, Lawrence, Theroux, M.F.K. Fisher, Sebald, West, Bryson, and others. I was so glad to see Paul Bowles mentioned, as well as W.G. Sebald, two of my favorite travel writers. However, I missed Laurie Lee's "As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning", about his walk around Spain in the Thirties....

Oh, I do love him. I was so thrilled to see Patrick Leigh Fehmoor that I didn't notice Lee was missing.

The one that really intriges me is Nomad Diaries. I am familiar with the subject as one of the early Victorian women travelers, but the description of her in the list really got my attention!
