We started out with a small flock (hand raised chicks). DH wasn't into it ... especially the poultry smell in the dining room and then giving up the Sacred garage as they got bigger before they went out. Having two dd and a determined wife, he was out numbered in body and will power >:) One thing dh stated about chickens was that they were so stupid (never having had chickens growing up, I can understand his ignorance). I had a pair of banties from my grandma and loved them dearly (until the visiting step sibs dog massacred them). You can train a chicken to come just as any animal buy relying on their stomach (husbands included). I feed the chicken grain and leftovers in the avairy late afternoon (they are up all morning, mid afternoon they roam the garden and put up at evening) when I feed I call in a soothing voice "shoo-shoo, gooooo home" and they make a mad dash for the feed. I did this when they were chicks and on up. Now I can call "shoo-shoo, go home" a couple of times while doing other things in the yard and they basically will put themselves up! LOL! But some times I don't have leftovers or have forgotten the cracked grains, being slow to close up the avairy, they will come running back to hunt me down and cluck and cock their heads like 'whats up?!' Maybe you can start the training process (for the chickens) and get them working with you instead of against. The hard boiled egg thing: I agree, you need lot older eggs and an ice shock to get an easy peel.

Caroline, if Cedric were involved the entire child IN the pants would be at the bottom of the aquarium - bwa ha ha haaaa! She was wearing a jean skirt when she got here, and the next day she changed from her pj's into an outfit DD gave her that she grew out of. I know how kids work and they unpack an entire bag to get out one thing, but I am not kidding that we checked the entire house. Our place is the size of a postage stamp. If they were here I would have tripped on them by now! I even checked behind the washer and dryer. The next time she asks about them I am considered telling her "Yes. We did find them. And we wanted to make sure you never saw them again so we sold them on ebay. Now shut up before you end up sleeping with the fish". Either that, or explain how the aliens took them in trade rather than subjecting us to anal probes. I mean, you wouldn't want us to be PROBED, would you? Tee hee!

The Secret River - it's pretty good, but it's just another story about a convict who is transported to Australia and makes good. Also had an annoying affectation of putting all the dialogue in italics, rather than the usual quote marks or dashes. I'm used to italics being used for what people think, so it wasn't easy to read. I enjoyed the book, but I'd be astonished if it wins. I have to say that I think it's a fairly weak short-list this year. My own personal favourite is Carry Me Down, which stands out head-and-shoulders better than any of the others. But others will almost certainly disagree with me. I thought The Testament of Gideon Mack was at least as good as most of the books on the short-list, and I also liked Black Swan Green - though I can see why they wouldn't want both BSG and Carry Me Down on the shortlist. I'm certainly not thrilled enough by any of them to risk a bet. Anyway, I'm told the result will be live on the 10:00 news on the BBC. Looking forward to it, but not with the same sense of anticipation as I felt for the last two years. Last year was an exceptional short-list, and the year before had Cloud Atlas which I still feel is one of the best books of the last ten years, and should have won the Booker. I'm going to re-read The Night Watch as it's a while since I read it - just to be fair. So, in summary:- Desai, Kiran: The Inheritance of Loss A bit wordy, but I quite liked it. Confusing as to dates. Can't see this winning. Grenville, Kate: The Secret River A good yarn, but not what I'd look for in a Booker winner. Hyland, M.J: Carry Me Down My personal favourite - a powerful story about a family in Ireland, and the consequences when a young boy finds out more than he ought to know. I hope this wins. Matar, Hisham: In the Country of Men Probably my second favourite - a powerful story of a young boy in Libya under Gaddafi. I'd be quite happy if this wins. St Aubyn, Edward: MotherÂs Milk A horrible book. Well written, but not a single nice person among any of the characters. I am so sick of books about rich people's problems. I bet this one wins. Sigh. Waters, Sarah: The Night Watch A good book about the relationship between four women during the war. Written "backwards", so to speak - we find out what happened later in the war, and only later in the book do we find out how they got there. The favourite, and already a best-seller. I don't think it'll win, though I wouldn't be upset if it did.

Only naming books you have read is NOT a rule-it just has to be a real book. You don't have to have had personal experience of said book. Although I do confess we read the entire Captain Underpants series once upon a time. Fine children's classics-should be on every family's shelves.

Okay Agnes-we're on the way. I think we said the next party is a Harvest Home party-warming alcoholic drinks (Martin- bringing the beer? I'm mulling wine) and root vegetable pies. I'm doing sweet potato. Other munchies as you wish. Can we do baked potatoes in the bonfire?

Can we wait until Friday Oct. 6th for the party? That's going to be the Hunter's Moon. We'll have on of the highest tides of the year on the river that night about 11:00pm. It should be close to 11 feet. If you have never seen a salt marsh covered with water in the full moon night, you have missed a sight!!

The bad thing will be that the walkway to the dock will be covered with water and we'll have to party until about 3AM.
