Paula, I've had a go at your test (I'm sure there was something very similar here a while ago) and despite not being able to answer questions 1 7 9 13 15 17 or 20 I got 68% Dixie!
The reason I could only answer so few was because, although I could have made something up they were irrelevant to my way of speaking/words chosen
eg I don't pronounce 'Aunt' in any of the ways indicated.
I would address a group of people as "Everyone/everybody"
We don't have those long sandwich things or the roads along 'highways' . . . which we call main roads or motorways.
Our public buildings do not provide water-drinking facilities.
I have never heard of anyone throwing any sort of paper over buildings (and was never allowed to use the 't' word anyway!)
Nor do we have liquor stores (they are called 'off-licences') let alone 'drive through'.

Otherwise there is a great similarity between your language and The Queen's English. ;-)

40% Yankee - despite living near NYC for the last 35+ years, and growing up in midstate NY. I have visited south of the Mason-Dixon line only twice. I think I am closer to mid-west, because I sometimes feel my language is closer to my mid-west daughters-in-law's than people in the NYC area.

Veer - just to clear up your bewilderment, the TP behavior is a popular Halloween prank, annoying and unsightly, but not destructive. If the kids get caught, they are generally required to clean up the mess, but they usually don't get caught.

We had our house rolled several times when my brothers were teenagers. Mom and Dad had to clean it up! Over the house, way up into the trees, almost impossible to easily remove.

A highly inaccurate test. I would never think of addressing a group of people by any of the terms given. Several I had to skip--never heard of. The rest made me 61% Dixie tho I am born and bred in NYC and have lived in the Boston area most of my adult life. Cute idea, bad test.

Interesting about the aunt pronunciation. I was trained to say "ant" as opposed to the more usual "ain't" heard in East Tennessee, which wasn't even on the quiz.

Are there actually drive through liquor stores out there? Connecticut still has "blue laws" - you can't buy any alcoholic beverages from a grocery or liquor store after 8 p.m. or on Sunday, and grocery stores can only carry beer, no wine or other liquor.

I picked 'you all', but I was thinking of a sentence like 'would you all like coffee?' For other uses it would just be 'you' although unfortunately many Aussies say 'youse'.

I also had a problem with the 'Aunt' question. People in the North of England might say it like 'ant' (the insect) but as for the other eg's . . . I'd have to ask you US RP'ers what your pronunciation of want and caught sound like.
The English say 'caught' in the same way as 'court'.
'Want' would rhyme with 'font' (the baptismal thing in a church).
Of course the above eg's depend on you pronouncing font and court in the English manner. ;-) I am afraid I could never understand those little squiggles in the dictionary that indicate how a word should sound.

Only guessed at the Bug name. Never have seen (or rarely) a drive through liquor store.

I must say that here in Tidewater, Virginia, the "natives" do not pronounce "Aunt" like the insect, but instead more to rhyme with "daunt". I've not yet picked up this regionalism, nor the "hoose" for "house," nor "oot" for "out."

I came out 60% Dixie. Although I've lived in California since the age of 1, my folks were from Missouri (pronounced Mi/zoo/ra by the people who live there). I'm married to a native of Tennessee, who has been in Calif. since 1976, but still gets asked where he's from. So maybe environment plays a part.

I lived in Arizona for a year or two, and they sported the only drive-through liquor store I've ever seen.

Sarah_Canary, that's interesting about the pronunciation of Missouri. I have of course heard several locals pronounce it that way, but never anyone in my little region of Missouri where I grew up. I've often wondered if it only applied to certain pockets of Missouri. If you ever visit the two big cities, St. Louis and Kansas City, you'll find a gulf of difference in pronunciations.

georgia peach - It could just be pockets. My relatives are/were from Cape Girardeau and down in the bootheel area. I've know people from St. Louis that don't have a trace of a southern accent. I've found that even within one family the accents can differ. My cousin David had a real strong, slow drawl, but his sisters both have much lighter accents.

I think the dead give-away for Southernisms on this quiz is the "Y'all." I've stopped saying it much, because it used to stereotype me, I felt. Also, recently, I've had so many friends from the north and west that I've picked up their "You guys."
