Critics lists, Boooo!

I always use the more enjoyable recommendations of boards like this one, (especially this one!), rather than official newspaper or critics lists. How much store do the rest of you place on so-called experts opinions?

I tend to run the other way when I spot a "Best books of 2005" or "top ten whatever" list!

You people are my experts!

Oh, I love reading other people's lists. I may not always agree with them (usually don't) but I always come across books I haven't even heard of, so I research them to find out more. If they sound good, it's more added to my TBR lists. I've found really good books/authors this way.

I get recommendations from book forums too, though. But there's just something about a list...

Depends on the critic. I am a regular reader of the NYTimes book review, and so I know how I react to some reviewers, and how some I take with a grain of salt. But I really don't read that many reviews before I've read a book. I usually chose books based on comments from other readers on book forums and book groups.

What I enjoy doing is reading reviews after I've read a book. Often it puts some things in perspective that I hadn't thought of, or helps me cement something I was already thinking. I'll also read reviews (on Amazon esp) if Im not really caring for a book but am unsure whether or not to finish it. Often those reviews either encourage me or tell me to trust my better judgement.

My Jolyene Nichole has been lovely this summer. Yeah, she has a bad habit with hiding down in the folliage, but this year she is really showing off. Scapes and blooms have been well above. All the rain I've gotten this season? I don't know, I have a lot of daylilies taller than 'normal' this year. She's been blooming for quit a while now and some days the clump has 15 open at once which is very pretty. I suppose she is not the best pink I have in the garden but she's earning her keep as a front of a border plant in that area. Guess it's each their own. If I had to decide on making run for something else I really wanted and the newer plant had to take just that space as to if she'd get to stay. But as a gardener who is into an overall effect rather than a display daylily bed, I like her just fine. My daylilies are chosen for the type of gardener that I am and must play nice in the area I will put it in as they are mixed in with lots of other plants. I saw Night Embers as a nice clump at a daylily farm last year, but choose a different dark colored clump instead. Overall it was pretty but there were several blooms having a bit of trouble opening properly or having room to open around surrounding buds. Gorgeous coloring. It's still now my 'thinking about it' list as I have a large number od dark blooms already in the area I'd put it, it's not won me over just yet--but than again somedays I can be much 'weaker' than others ;-0

Hi, Rexroat. What a terrific house! One thing that strikes me about your plan for your forever house so far, though, is that the area you plan to live in could no doubt fit into your old condo. I already hear the emptiness echoing from the front. Truly, it looks as if you wouldn't be using most of that other space for the foreseeable future, aside from an occasional social gathering, and in that shadowy future only after substantial changes from what is planned now. I'd suggest you look at that entire floor as a living home--repurpose it for family life you want to create there and fit the kitchen into that whole picture. Starting with, for instance, the perennially dusted, seldom used "formal" dining room. How about making that a family dining room instead, used daily as the children come along? Strengthen the kitchen connection, but keep it nice enough for dinner parties. Build in storage that can someday be study centers for your children, hold a TV if you love to be able to keep an eye on it now and then. Choose a table handsome enough for fine china but tough enough for children to bang their spoons on and do craft projects. Some comfortable upholstered chairs you and friends could settle into for a whole evening if desired. That dead-end living room! First thing I'd do is cut a door directly across from the kitchen and create a circular traffic flow so your kids can run and ride and play right through there, as well as everywhere else. Guests will circulate, and especially you too. If you did nothing else, the room would be enormously more livable for that little change. For now, it might just be used for nice, but eventually you'd love having that space--IF you loved the space. Probably more would need to be done. Not just decorating, but probably mainly in terms of landscaping, as in changing the feeling of the front rooms as they relate to the street. There are real behavioral reasons why so many front rooms sit gathering dust, but the underlying causes, once understood, are usually easily fixable. (Except for my friend Judy's case, whose family and 3 fish tanks lived in bedroom #4 for decades because she won't allow her living room to be messed up.) And when the day comes that your children head for the street, they and their friends would know the front of your bright spacious house is alive and you're often there, not always hidden far in the back where you can't watch over them. Not the suggestions you asked for, but sincere ones. :)

In my opinion and experience: 1) Temperature - A frozen orchid will have cell damage that they won't be able to recover from. A roasted and burnt one has the same issue. This is number 1 for me. 2) Humidity - Closely related to 1. Humidity is necessary for sensitive orchids to survive, (think Pleurothallids and Masdies) and for all others to thrive and bloom. You're not going to get growth and blooms without humidity. Too much and you'll get disease and rot. Also have found that as long as there is humidity around the roots that is satisfactory, the room an orchid is in doesn't necessarily need to be very high in humidity (thinking of orchids grown on windowsills). Being creative with potting and media helps here. 3) Lighting - most orchids can survive (not thrive) in lighting not suited for them if 1 and 2 are there. A lot of orchids can throw up one or two blooms for the same reason but to see really great growth, root porn and sprays of blooms you need the correct light. And often orchids need more or longer hours of light than most people think. 4) Water quality - again, orchids can get used to a lot but the more sensitive ones will suffer. 5) Media, frequency of watering - these two are related. You can get away with porous, dry media if you water frequently. You can get away with very wet and slowly drying media if you water less frequently. These 2 factors are not as crucial as 1-2 and 3 because you can work around it. Just my 2 cents.

Hi, Cdog. I’ve been thinking about your impression of being cyberbullied when cpartist asked you twice to post your full plans. i think you might have misunderstood her intent, and that even if you choose not to include your plans, you might be able to see her reason for suggesting it. First, I have been reading the help about kitchen designs even before Houzz took over GardenWeb. Cpartist has been a steady contributor for probably 8 years or more. They used to have something where you could find our how long someone has been a ’member’ but I don’t see it anymore. Second, neither cpartist nor I know each other. You can tell for certain that she doesn’t need a defender by looking at her other posts. Not only is she well-respected, but she continues to give back so much, even though her house was completed years ago. You might be interested in one thread from 6 years ago, Absolute Final Plans and Elevations-And Build thread (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/4361032/absolute-final-plans-and-elevations-and-build-thread). She chose to post incredibly detailed plans in order to get the best feedback. That post has 972 comments, including Mark Bischak, Architecht, who submitted the most recent post above. Third, it is also worthwhile to note that she is not sitting in a castle doling out advice without having been there herself. The third comment on the ‘newer’ page (NOT the one with the 922 prior comments) — the one from cpartist — shows she has undergone much frustration and disappointment and trials in that particular journey (that particular comment on a variable speed air handler). i think the point is that she and many others ask for a drawing with more specific information in order to understand things in relationship to each other; to see the entire picture (and then they ask you to explain what you want to achieve) so they can help you get there, often with a choice of ways to accomplish it. They are not looking to criticize, but instead they are trying to find ways to improve it to a more fulfilling potential. Please don’t be offended, and try to understand why she (and others) want to understand your goal in the context of the whole. I trust you will not be frustrated or angry with her; there is a reason for her request. It is still (and always will be) your choice whether to share more. Even if you opted to include more, it is your choice in the end to use or reject their input. She is (they are) not asking anything of you that is not pretty routinely asked of others seeking assistance. Thanks for your patience in reading and considering this. I have found that I get better results by reading the advertisements in the Times Book Review than the reviews. I also like to wait to see the letters that are written in reaction to the reviews.

I get recommendations from boards like this one, but I don't commit to reading until I've glanced at the critics' reviews: Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus and Booklist (easily accessible through the Novelist database). I don't read the reviews (I find it spoils the story too much), but if there is a star next to the review that sways me, and even more when at least 2 of the 3 give a star the book.

I guess it depends on what's being reviewed. If it's a non-fiction book, then I find that I can generally trust the reviewers, especially if the book deals with somewhat specialized topics such as the French Revolution, Krakatoa, or biographies.

For non-fiction, the problem is that taste can be VERY subjective. That being said, if a reviewer just HATES a book, then that MAY color my view of the book.

I have picked up books based on reviews, especially reviews from the Globe and Mail's Books section. I remember picking up a few non-fiction books based on their reviews and, so far, I haven't been disappointed. I'd read the NY Times more often but at around $5-$7 on weekends, that can be quite hefty! (I mean, if I shell out that kind of cash for a newspaper, I want to read MOST of it and then there goes my weekends!)

I also read the reviews in Harper's Magazine but I haven't picked up any books based on their reviews. I did, however, pick up a book based on an ad in Harper's and I was NOT disappointed -- it turned out to be one of the most engaging books I've ever read. It was Shadow of the Wind. ;-)

I like to hear about what others think of various books no matter where it is reviewed-newspaper, magazines, esp. Bookmarks, boards like these, and just talking to other readers.
My library haul today reflects the influence of these boards in my selections...Bachelor Brothers Bed and Breakfast and Queen Lucia. I would probably never heard about these otherwise.
