B&N stop tempting me!

I am trying not to buy any more books until I've read the ones I have. And I've been pretty good the past few months, though mainly due to lack of time than any real discipline.

And then, I opened the B&N members email. I know I should just delete it without reading it, but I just can't. Have you read any of these?

The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by Gordon Dahlquist

Now I'm not a huge mystery fan though I do pick one up occaisonally, but the blurb sounded great on this one.

And I am a sucker for a good title.

Grayson by Lynne Cox

True story about a long distance swimmer who is followed by a baby whale. I just love whales.

And then there's a new Jasper Fforde The Big Over Easy: A Nursery Crime, which sounds really fun.

Just borrowed the Jasper Fforde from the library-it was a hoot, although not the same series as the Eyre Affair-and the second one came out in July-The Fourth Bear-so I'm on the list for that at the library now.

The Fourth Bear is even better than The Big Over Easy.

It's not quite accurate to say they are not the same series as the Thursday Next novels - near the end of Something Rotten, the whole setup for the Nursery Crime novels is introduced.

But yes - they are very clever and very funny.

I got Lady Diana way back when it first came out--Chamblee's stocked it. They often carried unusual & florist type roses. Have no idea if it would be appropriate for your zone. My old zone back then was hot, humid coastal zone 9. A no-spray garden. It had perfect, high centered, pure light pink blooms on long straight stems that kept their tight scroll for a long time. Not a strong fragrance, but a definite sweet smell. I thought it was very beautiful, but it is certainly a modern type HT in form. I don't recall it being particularly disease prone. I grew it in a 10 gallon pot in an area with some high shade from mature trees. I'd pick another up if the local Lowe's stocks it. I have never had an Angel Face survive more than a couple of years. I love its color, fragrance & ruffled petals, just can't grow it, at least the budded plants I've picked up locally, in two different zones (humid zn 9 & desert 8) But seen some lovely photos of healthy plants posted here

Yes, I am tempted. I will probably hold off for now though. I do like a new car, and although there is the issue of depreciation, whenever I have bought used cars, I always ended up with lemons that needed a lot of expensive work. I just don't seem to have the knowledge/experience to buy a decent used vehicle. It just works out much better when I buy a new one. But I have to admit, I take some joy in having a new vehicle. We bought my Rendezvous new in 2004, we did not finance it. I weigh the pros and cons of financing, and keeping my investments in place or buying one out right and not dealing with a monthly payment. I'm a pretty conservative spender in most ways, and feel if I want a new vehicle and can swing it, that I should just do it. But I haven't made a final decision yet. Strangely, this economy gives me some job security. I am a social assistance administrator. Unfortunately, we are preparing for our caseloads to quadruple. In one year it is expected that our area will be in deep economic trouble. It's very sad.

Although I'm disparing at the idea that I won't have the tactile feel and smells of a book, I have run out of shelf space and will be forced to join the e-book crowd. I'm going to look at the nook this weekend, they aren't available for buying because they can't keep them in stock to put on the shelves, but if I like it I will get my name on the list. From what I've been able to read, the nook is superior to the kindle by those who have used both and there are things about the nook that more appeals to me than does the kindle. I have a feeling that in a couple of years, there will be very heavy competition for e-books and the prices will have dramatically reduced while the e-books product will have dramatically improved. I also have a feeling that the price of the reading material will get very competitive also and maybe be available to use any electronic device you own - all in the future. At that time I'll give mine to my husband and will get me the new and improved product ;) It's going to be very hard to make the transition - I will always keep my favorites in hardback but for the read and never read again, I'm going electronic.

Some years ago a friend was talking of her life with a husband who travelled quite a bit and had been found to have been unfaithful on, I think that it was a couple of occasions, maybe more, over a number of years. I suggested that I thought that, had such happened to me, as a wife, possibly after the first, but more likely after the second, and very likely after the third, I'd have told him to listen, and pay close attention, that if I became aware of his doing that again, that I'd go out and do exactly the same. Don't know whether suggested that I might aim at his best friend. She said that, after a/(some?) repetitions, she had told him she'd do/give serious thought to doing that. His very vehement reply, "I'd kill you!!" He was still alive ... some time after the divorce ... married his secretary, who'd been a collaborater in the troublemaking ... ... how deep a thinker/visionary of potential future possibilities do you suppose she might have been? ole joyful

That cursed B&N! They send me those e-mails, too. *smile* I've been eyeing The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters myself. It looks interesting, but I haven't read any reviews on it.

Barnes and Noble is located just across the parking lot from Home Depot and Linens'nThings...and today's errands include buying new pillows, picking up a part for the grill and having some keys made...I feel the need for a iced drink coming on-"oh look-B&N has a cafe...we'll just run in and out..."
bwha hahahahaha my evil plan can not fail....

true, the Fforde books all intertwine to a certain extent-I just didn't want anyone looking for "the next Thursday"-where is she, anyway?

side note: When I read I have a bad habit of skimming over the names of characters, and not worrying too much how they'd be pronounced, just as long as I can identify the spelling or look of the name-but with Fforde, you must say them out loud to get the allusion.

Indeed.

Thursday Next (or at least her car) makes a very very brief appearance in The Big Over Easy. She'll be back in May 2007, according to a bit of info at the end of The Fourth Bear.

Talking of names in the books, it's just crossed my mind that Landen Park-Laine is probably lost on US readers. The point is that in the UK version of Monopoly, the two most expensive "dark blue" properties just before GO are Mayfair and Park Lane. Hence...

Martin, thanks for the Landen Park-Laine explanation. I did not get the Monopoly reference.

I have just realized, my mother-in-law is coming to visit and she loves Jasper Fforde so I could buy it for her to read and she would probably read it while she was here and then leave it for me to read....

NO! grrrrrr......we never got to any of those errands at all. The best laid plans...but there's always this Saturday.
