August reading Part II

Still a few days to go before the end of the month, and I have read The Gate Keeper by Terry Eagleton, An academic from a very poor Liverpool-Irish background. The title refers to the job he had as a boy helping at a Carmelite convent.

Sheri, this might appeal to you.

Sea Wolf by Jack London. A strange mixture of daring-do on a sealing ship mixed with quasi-philosophical thought and rather cloying romance. Without the 'love interest' I was reminded a little of Conrad; both writing at a similar time and a nautical setting.

A Country Wife by Lucy Pinney who in a journalist for 'The Times' where her column about life in Devon first appeared. I don't usually enjoy 'funny' books about bucolic characters, but she seems very honest in her descriptions of her strange in-laws, her philandering husband and neurotic animals.
