I'm a very jealous mole seeing all your glorious gardens. My gardens took a double whammy hit this August. First, the heat/dry conditions which affected so many things and then --- on a very positive note --- my daughter, who lives in France with her family, has been here for a month. It's great to spend time with grandchildren --- the gardens played second fiddle to my family for sure this year! So --- no photos from me but many compliments and plants that are going on my 2014 Wish List. Where to start ? T2D, I love that darling Anemonopsis macrophylla with her shy blossoms. I have the later fall Japanese Anemones, which spread like mad. Does this self seed? Bill, I, too, really admire your stonework and the garden areas you've created. I see your Portulacas are running flush like mine, which self-seeded from last year and are all over the gardens. I love the Crocosmia (had one years ago) and that Hesperaloe parvifolia, two plants that I'll have to search out for next year. They both make beautiful statements. Is that Lithodura beneath it? I was inspired to put some in after seeing yours. One clump died but the other has spread over several feet. Claire, my sedums are still green, but my Phlox 'David' is still standing tall. I'll have to cut back many of my others because of heat stress. I also admire your Frans Hals --- looks as if it's not been bothered by the heat. Franeli, I love the combo of Casa Blanca lilies with --- is that Verbena bonariensis in front? And stack316 --- yours are those interesting doubles I've seen online and in catalogues. Sadly, my lilies are done for the year. Persimmons --- your "volunteer" nasturtiums are adorable --- cherry brightness! Maybe I'll plant a patch of those around the telephone pole in front of our driveway next season. Everyone's gardens are so inspirational. Keep posting, please!

Furnace limit switch puzzle?

The furnace is over sized. The limit switch is doing its job. Original and second switch are fine. Don't let a tech install a switch with a higher rating. How big is the filter and what type is it? Try running the furnace without the filter and see if the behavior is the same. Make sure all the vents are open. You might have a filter that is too restrictive, or too many vents are closed causing the furnace to over heat.

Apricot follies

Behind every silver lining there is a cloud. A number of the apricots (of both varieties) had some maggot damage around the pit. Generally not enough to damage much of the fruit, but enough to create a "yuck" factor, especially for the squeamish (which I am not). This was one of the worst ones. I did see what looked like apple maggot (AM) flies around the trees about the time they were ripening, but did not see the characteristic "stings" on the exterior of the fruit that AM usually create when laying their dastardly eggs. And the maggots did not seem to tunnel through the fruit like AM do in apples. Perhaps they got in where the stem attached to the fruit? And we do have plum curculio (PC) but I fixed them with 2 sprays of permethrin early in June and I believe we have only 1 generation. So August would have been too late for them I think. In any case, none of the affected fruit showed the crescent-shaped PC oviposition scars. Does anyone else have these in apricot, or know what they are? Cherry fruit maggot fly perhaps?
