Has anyone else looked at the Literature Map I've linked to? It maps the realative closeness of authors, along the lines of "if you like him you'll probably like her." I came across it yesterday -- did I find it here first? I cannot remember! -- and it's lots of fun. I'm not convinced of its accuracy, but wondered what others think.

I've checked this out using 'Faulkner' and found myself in the company of Greene, Salzman. Updike, Borges, Conrad, melville, Blake, Kesey, Atwood - having read and enjoyed at least one of their texts - novel/poem - although I dont quite know what to make of this info - interesting site though.

I've used the site a few times to get ideas for finding authors that are similar in style to my favorites. I am surprised many times - I'd love to see how they come up with their pairings.

I also use Goodreads, but this site is fun. One of my favorite writers is Jhumpa Lahiri. When I typed in her name, up popped the names of other authors I have enjoyed, but also some new suggestions. Thanks for pointing this out.

Susie, Thanks for asking. It was a fabulous trip. Very memorable in many ways. Riding elephants, petting tigers, the people, the architecture. Each of us had a digital camera and we have 5,000 photos to sort through and edit! ( I always make photobooks when we travel). Already planning our next trip(s). Actually I have planned our next five trips; it's a bit of a hobby of mine. As for the beachhouse ... total frustration. Turns out the driveway is not on the property; it has crossed through abutters for 100 years. The estate we are buying form has been unsuccessful in getting it resolved and may need to go to court. We can't close until it is settled since you cannot sell landlocked property. We are keeping an eye out for an alternative but we want something very specific and not easy to find. And we aren't willing to settle. As I told the agent, we don't need a third house, for goodness sakes, so we won't buy it unless we find it compelling! Julie, Thanks for the link. Which one? Or all?

I enjoy Ann Granger's Mitchell & Markby series (usually don't care for mysteries featuring a detective but he has his Foreign Office fiancee and her sleuthing stirring up the stories and making them more interesting); the Lucy Stone series up in Tinker's Cove, Maine with all the recurring characters who all grow in different ways through the series (I like that!); M C Beaton's Hamish MacBeth and agatha raisin series (she doesn't write as well as she did years ago but the recurring characters in each series are wonderful as are the actual mysteries); John Lescroart's dismas hardy series (set in San Francisco, a lawyer and his family, friends and clients, trials, and always a very good mystery); the Nameless Detective series (Pronzini is a beautiful, thoughtful narrator of his mysteries); and the early books in the "Cat Who" series (I lost interest after the Potato Mt mystery).

I've been playing with the site and decided to look up Terry Pratchett. Wow - he's separated from just about anyone, a truly unique writer! Closest author to him is Raymond Feist, who I read and loved in college.

Wow! That's so neat. It pegged me pretty good. I tried several of the different authors I like and the results were quite accurate! The only author I couldn't get results for was Preston-Child. I love their Pendergast series.

I just tried calling up the famous Yorkshire writers who flourished in the '50s & '60s - Alan Sillitoe (Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner), John Braine (Room at the Top), David Storey (This Sporting Life), Stan Barstow (A Kind of Loving) - and the only one they seem to have heard of is Stan Barstow..... Amazing! I even drew a blank on J.B. Priestley (The Good Companions, An Inspector Calls, Angel Pavement etc).

Fascinating site. I entered a number of different authors and came up with differing lists. Not sure of its total accuracy, however. The site had never heard of L.B. Hartley, author of "The Go-Between", one of my favorite books.

Well, I'm sure they can't put every author in there. But the idea of accuracy is interesting - since they are just saying that people who like this one might like that one, its hard to say. I do find it interesting how it changes depending on the search. I mentioned Raymond Fiest being close to Pratchett when I first looked. But when I then searched Fiest, Pratchett was no where near...go figure

I've run across this map when searching for something else a couple of times and played around with it. I don't really understand the logic of it. What ever criteria they are using, it is not the same criteria my brain is using.
