CXXII ?? What is this game called and what are the rules?

I read these and think I get it, then see one that I don't get. Who started this and how long has it been going on? Please explain to a newbie.

No idea what the game is called. It's been going on for 122 threads of between a hundred and a hundred and fifty entries - so call it nearly fifteen thousand entries...!!!

The game is very simple. You have to suggest a real author and title which is relate in some way to the previous author and title. "In some way" is pretty flexible though. Some of them are obvious, some are a bit of a stretch....!!

So

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell by Susanna Clarke

might be followed by

Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

which might be followed by

The Birds by Doris Lessing

You get the idea. Just read back through and see how each goes on from the next. If one doesn't seem clear, think a bit - if you still can't get it, feel free to ask!

I think that I started this particular game, though I can't remember for sure now. But it's not the first time it's been played....though this is the longest by far that I am aware of.

Well, Moni....I just traveled down the coast highway from Mid Washington to Brookings Oregon. (Sorry in a Winnebago) And I held my breath while riding along the "Oregon Bicycle Path" in far too many places....just thinking of you! I hope, I hope, I hope your group is big enough to tell those BIG motorhomes to make way for bicycles!. Too, too scary. I will be checking your journal to see how you do. Does anybody know the game called Ships A-Sailing?

That is close to how we played it. In our version the first person says Ships a sailing, second person asks what's your cargo, first person names something, second person has to name something that correlates in some way to the first. If the second person's suggestion is not acceptable he is not allowed to go on the ship and is left in the ocean (has to sit on the floor.) This continues over and over with those not naming something acceptable, joining the others in the water and you may have several people in the water. Often players realize what the connection is to the two objects and therefore don't have to get down on the floor. Guess it sounds silly, but it really is fun, especially when some of the "smartest" people are not making the connection. I'm going to keep thinking, and maybe it will come to me. Thanks! I thought that was what was going on but was afraid to join in because I thought there might be some rules I didn't understand. And that's a LOT of threads!

If there are any rules, I haven't found them!!!! sometimes if you are completly stumped, as I often am, look back a few entries. Sometimes the new one is slow getting in and it refers to one two or three back.

Sometimes I think the link is because the stories are about the same thing. That kind of link is a chancy thing as unless a person has read both books, the link is a mystery.

There are frequent jokes. One of the best I saw was

followed by

Ive played this on another forum and had a lot of fun. After a while tho I started running out of steam. Might try to get back in here.

granjan-we have had some doozies-a potluck in January that left poor Martin under the weather from his "warm" beer (hehehehe Martin...okay-cellar temperature), the Valentine's Day one at my island mansion went on for days and was such a sugar high we all needed a spa weekend, the Midsomer party was decadent and steamy....but we did play a rousing game of croquet to work off more calories.
