CXXII ?? What is this game called and what are the rules?

I read these and think I get it, then see one that I don't get. Who started this and how long has it been going on? Please explain to a newbie.

No idea what the game is called. It's been going on for 122 threads of between a hundred and a hundred and fifty entries - so call it nearly fifteen thousand entries...!!!

The game is very simple. You have to suggest a real author and title which is relate in some way to the previous author and title. "In some way" is pretty flexible though. Some of them are obvious, some are a bit of a stretch....!!

So

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell by Susanna Clarke

might be followed by

Jonathan Livingston Seagull by Richard Bach

which might be followed by

The Birds by Doris Lessing

You get the idea. Just read back through and see how each goes on from the next. If one doesn't seem clear, think a bit - if you still can't get it, feel free to ask!

I think that I started this particular game, though I can't remember for sure now. But it's not the first time it's been played....though this is the longest by far that I am aware of.

Want to play a game? It's called Help me Choose a Tree!

Fall color and/or flowering would be nice, but certainly not required! And by not wanting a "messy" tree I mean one that is going to drop fruit that will attract bees, or leave stains on the driveway etc. I don't mind seed pods or leaves falling (I DID say I wanted a deciduous tree, after all.) And I'm thinking less than 30', so maybe that would be considered a small tree? Something bigger than an ornamental, but smaller than, say, a maple. Thank you, Waas, for the *Helpful* suggestion!

Couldn't find a game called "Oh Man" but did come up with one called "Steal the Old Man's Bundle" played with a 52 card deck. Could you also be thinking of a game called "Oh He!!" but were not allowed to swear? It's also played with a 52 card deck http://www.pagat.com/exact/ohhe!!.html You will have to correct the spelling when you cut and paste. Sue Here is a link that might be useful: Card Game

What is the rule of thumb for a return call from a contractor?
Q

Wow, now people who don't just immediately recognize the genius of a contractor are implied to be "not the right class"? Rath-er..... I'm glad this gentleman has so many devotees but in fairness to the OP the original question was about timely communication and professional behavior. I can assure you that even the "delicate geniuses" (to quote Seinfeld) of any profession need to return calls. It only takes a moment to say that they aren't available. im SO glad I lucked out with an absolute gem of a GC. Amazing quality of work (and im picky and experienced with renos) honest as the day is long, and no ego...actually listens and does not dictate. When you find someone like this you make major life decisions based on their availability. We have purchased or passed on flips based on his schedule. At this point in our relationship I would not bid out jobs but even if I did I am sure he would react professionally and not sever a long term association. This has absolutely zero to do with being cost-driven. I could not even tell you if he's low middle or high compared to others. But at one point, before I met him, I was looking. I had many people bid on a kitchen for example. I was new to the area. Believe it or not there were people who thought their reputation preceeded them but it was Greek to me as id only been in town a hot second. As a woman meeting these folks. there was also a fair bit of "mansplaining" about how things should work or why they were the obvious choice, or even the subtle shaming another poster also engaged in if i questioned costs. That's a turn off for me and I would guess many others. At the end of the day, no matter how talented a service provider may be, they still have to make you comfortable enough to give them the job. For me, its an equally bad sign if they don't return calls as if the proclaim "you aren't good enough for me if you talk to anyone else about this job " Again its business.

Thanks! I thought that was what was going on but was afraid to join in because I thought there might be some rules I didn't understand. And that's a LOT of threads!

If there are any rules, I haven't found them!!!! sometimes if you are completly stumped, as I often am, look back a few entries. Sometimes the new one is slow getting in and it refers to one two or three back.

Sometimes I think the link is because the stories are about the same thing. That kind of link is a chancy thing as unless a person has read both books, the link is a mystery.

There are frequent jokes. One of the best I saw was

Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

followed by

Meissen Porcelain: Identification and Value Guide by Jim Harran and Susan Harran

Well, it made me laugh.

granjan-we have had some doozies-a potluck in January that left poor Martin under the weather from his "warm" beer (hehehehe Martin...okay-cellar temperature), the Valentine's Day one at my island mansion went on for days and was such a sugar high we all needed a spa weekend, the Midsomer party was decadent and steamy....but we did play a rousing game of croquet to work off more calories.
